Fifth Week BCS Rankings Explained (with Logic)

Each week, I am continuing to take a look at the BCS rankings (Top Ten anyway), attempting to decipher them, and concluding how they occurred.  Clearly, I will be referencing the pure wisdom that exists throughout the polling process and the infallibility of all of the computer rankings.  In other words, this is not to be taken too seriously.  On to the logic!

1. Team: LSU Tigers (10-0)

Last Week's Ranking: 1

Reason for being ranked this high: The Tigers continued their winning ways, following up their stellar offensive showing over Alabama with a romp over Western Kentucky of the Gun, er, Sun Belt conference.  Props to LSU for playing such a tough non-conference opponent at this late date in the season.  SEC Speed!

2. Team: Oklahoma State Cowboys (10-0)

Last Week's Ranking: 2

Reason for being ranked this high: ...And then there were two...undefeated teams...from "real" conferences.  The Cowboys beat Texas Tech without any trouble, the same Red Raiders squad that beat the mighty Sooners.  This Oklahoma State team is for real!

Reason they aren't ranked higher: They settle for playing pathetic, conference opponents at this time of  year instead of scheduling mighty Sun Belt teams.  Big 12 Speed! is not SEC Speed!

3. Team: Alabama Crimson Tide (9-1)

Last Week's Ranking: 3

Reason for being ranked this high: Alabama bounced back from their "Loss of the Century" nicely, beating a solid Mississippi State team.  Like LSU, they have a big non-conference game late in the season...next week against Georgia Southern.

Reason they aren't ranked higher: You know what?  I'm not really sure why not!  Who wouldn't want to see LSU and Alabama play against each other in the NCG?  Isn't anyone interested to see how those two offenses would do against each other?

4. Team: Oregon Ducks (9-1)

Last Week's Ranking: 7

Reason for being ranked this high: The Ducks ruined Stanford's chance for a perfect season for the second straight year this weekend.  The lesson: Criminals > Bookworms.

Reason they aren't ranked higher: You know what?  I'm not really sure why not?  Who wouldn't want to see LSU and Oregon play against each other in the NCG?  Isn't anyone interested to see what would undoubtedly be a very close game?

5. Team: Oklahoma Sooners (8-1)

Last Week's Ranking: 6

Reason for being ranked this high: Oklahoma moved up in the rankings, following a treacherous bye week.  Their sole loss remains to Texas Tech.  True, that was the last time the Red Raiders won a game, but at least they looked good in those defeats, right?

Reason they aren't ranked higher: This one seems like a technicality.  As I understand it, their ticket to play in the NCG against LSU is already punched, isn't it?

6. Team: Arkansas Razorbacks (9-1)

Last Week's Ranking: 8

Reason for being ranked this high: The Razorbacks beat a hapless Tennessee team this past weekend and jumped up two spots, making them the third SEC West team in the top 6.  Everything's beginning to fall into place.... (Uncontrollable evil laughter.)

Reason they aren't ranked higher: Can we just be honest on this one?  Who the heck cares about Arkansas?  Anyone?  Didn't think so.

7. Team: Clemson Tigers (9-1)

Last Week's Ranking: 9

Reason for being ranked this high: The Tigers climbed in the rankings for the second straight week since their loss to Georgia Tech...and why not?  Last week a bye, this week a big victory against mighty Wake Forest.

Reason they aren't ranked higher: Clemson's loss against the Yellow Jackets really hurts them...it's not like they lost to a powerhouse team like Texas Tech.

8. Team: Virginia Tech Hokies (9-1)

Last Week's Ranking: 10

Reason for being ranked this high: The Hokies managed to pull out a victory this week against those pesky Yellow Jackets!  They should be favored in their next two games, setting up a rematch against Clemson in the ACC championship game (assuming Clemson wins out).  Aren't rematches fun?  If only there was some way that a rematch could occur in the NCG too...

Reason they aren't ranked higher: Unfortunately for the Hokies, their loss didn't come against those toughies, the Red Raiders either!  I'm pretty sure that whoever they did lose against didn't do much this year...

9. Team: Stanford Cardinal (9-1)

Last Week's Ranking: 4

Reason for being ranked this high: Andrew Luck and his band of geeks fell out of the championship picture this week with a loss to the Ducks.  Still, at 9-1 they have a good chance to make a BCS game...also, their national Mathlete Championship hopes are alive and well.

Reason they aren't ranked higher: Hello!  Anybody home?  They lost to Oregon, not Texas Tech!  Yeesh.  Haven't you learned anything yet?

10. Team: Boise State Broncos (8-1)

Last Week's Ranking: 5

Reason for being ranked this high: The Broncos managed to stay in the Top 10, despite losing to TCU in a heart-breaker.  Voters, having a sick sense of humor, kept BSU in the Top 10 so as to keep Bronco fans' hopes of a BCS berth alive, despite the fact that it just ain't happening (sorry Nuggies).

Reason they aren't ranked higher: The voters also think it's kind of fun to see BSU fans feel dejected right away.

Just missed the top 10: Houston Cougars (10-0)

Reason they aren't ranked higher: Penalty for having the same first name as Coach Nutt at Ole Miss.
