All the talk about the Big East expansion has stated that Boise State and Air Force would be football-only members. That leaves only poor prospects for conferences to house all of our other sports. I think the Big East should add all its new teams in all sports.
Now, I know that, as presently constituted/proposed that would result in unwieldy travel for our non-football teams. But I have a new proposal (and a poll) after the jump (natch).With WVU's departure the Big East is in need of another team to get to its desired 12 football-playing schools. If that school is also in the western US (I'm thinking BYU or SDSU) this plan would work beautifully:
Everything else (pods):
|Boise State||Cincinnati||Uconn||South Florida|
|Air Force||Marquette||Seton Hall||Navy|
|SMU||Notre Dame||St John's||Louisville|
Provided the right scheduling framework, this alignment could accommodate travel much easier for basketball and other sports that play more than 12 games. Such a scenario would likely be much more attractive to BSU, AFA, and the yet-to-be-determined 12th football school (BYU, SDSU, or even UNR).
A note: I'm not a Big East expert. It's possible my alignment has broken up some traditional basketball rivalries. I'm not even certain I have my geography correct! That being said, I'm sure adjustments/accommodations can be made to make something like this work.
