The Mountain West Conference is not the only conference eyeing the Lone Star State for new members. Ferd Lewis of the Star Advertiser in Honolulu is reporting that the Western Atheletic Conference will be meeting on January 14th in San Antonio. Part of the agenda will include finding one or more schools to replace the University of Hawaii, who will be leaving for the MWC in 2012. Those replacements could be additional Texas schools. Texas State and University of Texas-San Antonio are all ready on board to join the WAC in 2012.
While Lamar University in Beaumont, Texas has been mentioned, Lewis reports, Commissioner Karl Benson has refused to discuss specific candidates, and only that Texas is in the WAC's "footprint" and "we're not going to rule out anyone in our footprint." He also added that any membership decisions would be made by July 1, 2011.
