Virginia Tech poised to pass Boise State in final BCS standings!
(I needed to put some sort of dream headline in there to help me out...)
Anyway...
Driving in to work this morning this thought came to my head: should VT go undefeated the rest of the way, would/could they pass Boise State in the polls/BCS standings? I debated even asking the question. But, I’m a Virginia Tech fan who is having a tough time moving on from this loss. So I guess the most optimistic VT football thought I can have at this point following Monday’s devastation is maybe, just maybe, Virginia Tech can win-out the rest of the season and climb back into the NCG discussion.
I wanted to put this question to you Bronco fans. I read Kevan’s post yesterday (“Stealing a Win…”) and it made me think that some Boise State fans might actually admit that Monday’s game could have truly gone either way. I figured I’d ask the question now while the game is still fresh in everybody’s mind – instead of asking the question in December if by some one-in-a-million-shot this scenario were to come through.
The question: if Virginia Tech went undefeated the rest of the season, would you be absolutely appalled if they somehow passed an undefeated Boise State to land in the NCG?
There are a ton of things that need to fall in to place from Tech’s perspective (heck.. in their post-Labor Day funk could drop Saturday to FCS JMU), but I wanted to ask the question while you Boise fans have the game fresh in your memory (and probably have watched the game a second time or third time already). Heck, this scenario would also mean there is not an undefeated Big 12, team, Big 10 team, or TCU.
Would you be devastated/shocked/appalled/etc if an undefeated VT team (which would mean wins @ BC, @ UNC, @ Miami, vs Georgia Tech, and the ACC Championship game) ended up in the NCG? Would the game you guys all watched Monday night (the embarrassing 1st quarter followed by pretty solid football until minute 58 of the game), plus the body of work, make even a Boise State fan say, “You know… I could accept that.”
I know I’m asking the wrong crowd and I’ll probably get blasted for even suggesting this, but I like to think that VT earned enough respect from Bronco Nation on Monday night to actually consider that maybe they would be okay if things shook out this week.

Not So Fast My Friend.....
The computers might jump Tech over BSU but I don’t think the voters would allow it. There was talk of that last year in regards to BSU’s win over the University of Zero (Oregon). It never happened and UofZ went and laid an egg in the Rose Bowl.

resident lee corso. lol. vt will lose at least one more game in acc. 9-3. good luck

I expect them to compete immediately for the conference CG. Brock Lesnar will defeat Cain Velasquez. Womens MMA, the next big thing in sports. Utah and Boise take care of business in week one. Don't be surprised if they both go undefeated.

True but....
We were 13-0 going into the Bowl games ranked 6th, and Oregon was 10-2 ranked 7th, only one spot behind us with 2 more losses, one of those being to us. With out that other loss they most likely would have passed us. So I don’t think it’s out of the question that Virginia Tech could pass us in the polls. I don’t believe it should happen, but that doesn’t mean it couldn’t. Look at 2008. We beat Oregon in Eugene, went 12-0 and loss to TCU by 1 point in the bowl game. We finished 12-1 and 13th in the final AP poll that year. Oregon went 10-3 and finished 9th in the final AP poll. Yes, this was AFTER the bowl games but still, a team we beat (on the road), that finished with 2 more losses than us finished higher in the media poll.

Now with the widely held belief that Boise State made a statement against Va. Tech.
There may be some Boise State fans who are worried about that, but the most of the media, pollsters, and coaches are echoing the same sentiment; Boise State looked like a top ranked team in their win. Hence the eight first place votes in the AP Poll, and only 13 points behind #2 Ohio State. Plus the two spot jump in the Coaches Poll over two teams that didn’t lose but had lackluster performances against lesser opponents.
I’d be more worried about Florida and Texas leap-frogging the Broncos once the conference schedules begin, because let’s face it, they’re bound to take a dive once WAC teams start dropping like flies. Two things will have to happen for that not to take place.
1. Boise State has to do what Herbie said; beat every conference opponent by 30 points. Style points matter to the human element. A close game against La. Tech will bring them down.
2. Florida, Texas, Ohio State, Alabama, Iowa, Nebraska, Oregon, pretty much every top 10 team will have to lose to keep Boise state inside the top 3 once New Mexico State, San Jose State, and Utah State roll around. Strength of opposition, however misguided and biased it might be, plays a real role in the perception of a team. If Boise State doesn’t beat Utah State by more than 7 points, the association between them and Oklahoma will begin; Oklahoma barely beat Utah St. 31-24.
TCU could end up jumping the Broncos like they did last year with the perception that the MWC holds sway over NAQ Conferences. But I think Va. Tech will really have to steam roll the ACC and Boise State would have to limp through the WAC for the Hokies to make that jump. It’s possible, but I think it’s highly unlikely. Boise State has never “limped” trhough the WAC. Their lowest finish in a decade was 2nd in conference.
This is what I love about College Football though, anything can happen, and sometimes it does.

I guess
I guess what I was wondering was: if those other teams should fall with a loss, judging by what you saw on the field on Monday, if Tech went undefeated the rest of the way, would you guys accept it if people put Tech above BSU at the end.
I know in CFB that is always the ultimate eyeball test: Boise State beat Tech on the field – conversation over.
I was just thinking… in this particular case, since everyone here watched the game and probably came away from the game with a pretty mutual respect for the other team, would VT passing be a total shock .. total disappointment and totally unacceptable.
No I wouldn't be shocked.
Ridiculous stuff like that happens to Boise State on a regular basis. Like months of hype leading up to the whupping they were supposed to get from Oregon, only to demoralize that team and beat them soundly and have it ignored going forward becuase it was Chip Kelly’s “first game”.
Or roughing up Oklahoma for more than three and a half quarters of football, only to have the entire outcome summed up in three “trick” plays by the media, and every outside of Boise State football.
Or going 112-17 over the course of a true decade (which hadn’t been done since the 1890’s) and having that summarily dismissed because of the level of competition involved. Please, in the 1890’s Yale and Princeton were playing actual high schools yet Boise State gets all the negative pub since New Mexico State can’t get it together. Nice.
So yeah, as I said, it’s entirely possible. Would I approve? Absolutely not. But then again, Bill Hancock and his cronies aren’t exactly beating up my phone to get my opinion either.

utah will take care of tcu.
tcu’s defense is weaker this year and when dalton gets rattled he throws picks like the 3 vs boise(fiesta bowl) and the two vs osu. same thing happens in slc. utah got this.

Shocked?
Sorry, it’s early. No I wouldn’t be shocked. I also don’t think it would be right. Both teams made enough mistakes to lose. BSU lost 2 fumbles on their end of the field and a running into the kicker penalty turned into a touchdown for VT. Yes this game could have gone either way, but BSU did enough things right to win. The win is the key. I do not see how you could rightfully put VT over BSU after BSU has beaten them head to head. I do hope that VT runs the table. Even with 1 loss they would get at least a BCS Bowl game. Heck BSU may not even get into any BCS Bowl game unless they beat everyone by “enough”, whatever that is.
Not this again
We had to deal with this last year with Oregon. This is the risk of playing a high profile opponent early.
So, I politely decline to speculate until it actually happens. However, a win has to count for something, right?
The...
The only reason I am bringing this up now, and not until it happens (which I think is about a 0.1% chance), is this might be the only time of the season that Boise State fans might consider this scenario.
Come early December, when Boise State is 12-0 (or whatever…), ranked #2, with wins over VT and Oregon State, nobody will entertain this question.
I would be shocked
I was at the game and have watched it again on tv. That game could have gone either way. Both teams hurt themselves at various critical parts of the game and both teams made great plays. If those teams played each other 10 times their records may be 5-5. I will give credit that this essentially was a road game for Boise and they had to deal with noise and a hostile crowd. Boise did a great job of shutting down Williams with the run; but I also think Boise was fortunate that Hosley was not on the field for Boise’s last drive.
If both teams win out the computers might help the Hokies because a strength of schedule- although that may not be a huge edge because we will have to see how the other teams in our conference fare. 2 thirds of the formula are people voters and I think people voters (Harris poll and Coaches poll) will have a tough time mentally placing VT over Boise because Boise did beat them essentially on the road- so I guess I would be shocked; especially if neither team has a loss from this point forward.
Ah, Perry the platypus, as usual your timing is uncanny. And by uncanny, of course I mean... completely canny!
The only way I could see this
Is if every team in the ACC won their out of conference games and no one in the division sucked at all. The Big Tens and SECs (bw) all over the ACC almost as much as the Non-AQ’s…the ACC and Big East are the BCS’s ugly stepsisters, and I don’t mean that as an insult to VT as much as I view it as an insult to the system.
I'm a Hokie but I would not be shocked
because the BCS is a very flawed system. Say VT wins and BSU wins out. A lot of this could depend on style points. If VT could solve some of their blaring problems and win out with dominating performances, you will see voters looking for reasons to jump Boise because they want to find reasons not to vote for Boise. This would narrow the human poll gap between the two.
Then you have the computer polls and they could cause real issues because they would consider DC to be a neutral site game when we all know it was not. So the imperfect system would be shown with all it’s flaws. This would totally suck for BSU and would make me feel unworthy as a VT fan but it’s not likely to happen.
It’s much more likely that a one loss Alabama, Florida, Texas or Ohio State team keeps Boise out. That’s what Boise fans should worry about.
Alec: Chris, did you really buy a $1400 toilet?
Chris: Yeah, it's great. It's Japanese and has those little warm water jets that clean the undercarriage.
Eric: Chris, it's a toilet, you shit in it.
Ohio State
For some reason I have a hunch Miami is going to beat Ohio State on Saturday.
(which means you can bet it won’t happen since I am always wrong)
The Boise State fans sure would go nuts if Miami knocked off Ohio State and Alabama lost to Penn State in the same night.
Surprised? No.
Irritated? Yes.

It would not be Fair or Correct for VT to pass BSU
Reasons:
1. Boise State beat Virginia Tech
2. Boise played VT on their “Home Field Plus” – more on this in another post – and still won
3. Boise State had more mistakes, turnovers, and blown calls – and still won
4. See reason 1, repeat
Virginia Tech is an incredible team and I feel very good about the strength of our team that we were able to beat yours. Good luck the rest of the way. I believe you will run the ACC table.

Agree on some
3. Boise State had more mistakes, turnovers, and blown calls – and still won
I don’t agree with Number 3. But, I’m a Tech fan, so it’s expected that my feeling is that Tech made more mistakes and had more blown calls.
I don't know about blown calls but...
penalties. Oh my goodness. 11 penalties for 105 for Boise State. Ryan Williams didn’t need to run all over us. We literally gave you guys the entire field, plus and extra 5 yards just for good measure.

I was curious
Maybe this is a subject for another message..
But is there a possibility for a Boise State / VT rematch? I don’t know the “order” of which BCS games “pick” when, but is there a chance for a rematch? I know the ACC champ goes to the Orange Bowl, but don’t other BCS bowls “pick first” or something with At-Large BCS teams/games?
Forgive my lack of knowledge on how the BCS games line up. I always just look at the overall BCS lineup in mid-December and never seem to give much thought of how certain teams “line up” in the “other BCS” games.
I’ve been hearing that the Labor Day game was ESPN’s most watched game, so I wonder if someone out there in the world might clamor for a rematch if Boise State gets passed up on for the NCG.
Among the many reasons I hated the outcome on Monday night: I want to watch the game again. But, with Tech on the losing end, I have zero interest in watching a second time. (If Tech was on the winning end I, probably like a lot of you guys, would have watched the game at least two or three more times already this week)
Probably not in the same season.
Rarely do they put two teams together who have already played that year. In fact, I don’t know of it ever happening n the BCS era. They had the chance with Ohio State and Michigan a few years ago and it didn’t happen. As far as I know, it’s the only time that scenario has come up.
I'm always right. Your Welcome.
this came up w/ Oregon last year
Towards the end of last season, a few voters were starting to vote Oregon ahead of Boise. Thankfully that didn’t catch on. I mean, I get that Oregon plays a tougher conference schedule and so does VT. But I think most of the voters understand that an undefeated team shouldn’t be ranked behind a team whose only loss was to that undefeated team. When you have actual head-to-head results to go by, that should be your guiding principle. Plus the voters like BSU even better now than last year. So I would be surprised if VT passed BSU in the polls as long as they continue to win.
