So I've decided to jump on the Boise State bandwagon with no knowledge of college football. Help me out.
Hey guys,
My name is Aditya and I am a blogger for the Tennessee Titans blog for SB Nation, Music City Miracles, so I'm a huge NFL and Titans fan. I've never really watched college football before, besides some of the UT and Vandy games when they're on. I decided this year that I want to start following college football, so I made some of my friends help me pick a team, and it came down to TCU and Boise State, and I picked Boise State after watching last night's amazing game.
What I'm here to ask is, what can you briefly tell me about the Broncos as the season begins? What can you tell me about the big players, and about the team in general? Any traditions? Can you even relate the team to an NFL team so I can better understand what I've come into becoming a part of the Bronco nation. Did I make the right decision choosing this team?
I'm excited for my first season as an Boise State fan.
Go Broncos!
This content was not created by OBNUG and therefore may not meet our standards. On the contrary, it probably exceeds them.

Can you even relate the team to an NFL team so I can better understand
If you have caught up much on Everton, there are a lot of similarities between the Toffees and the Broncos. Blue in color and also blue collar. They get it done with less money, less heralded players and superior coaching.
What you need to know about Boise State is that they are not a team that survives on a bunch of trick plays. They are also not a finesse team. As you saw last night, they are a balanced offense that will play smashmouth football then turnaround and run misdirection on the next play. The defense is aggressive, creative and relies on a lot of man-to-man (maybe not after last night) to bring pressure on the QB.
Not a lot of traditions to speak of. For years one side of the stadium has yelled BOISE and echoed by STATE on the other side. The blue turf was installed in 1986 and is no longer seen as a gimmick. It is revered by fans and is simply called The Blue (and a fan never refers to it as Smurf Turf – and it is pronounced Boy-C not Boy-Z).
Only a division 1-A (FBS) football team since 1996, BSU has a history of winning at all levels they have played. Idaho is historically the main/hated rival, but that hasn’t been competitive in a decade so Fresno St and Nevada has become conference dates to circle on the calendar.
There is a Boise State FANUAL that should be required reading for all new fans. It is two years old so if you are confused about the Marty Tadman references just think what it would be like if Kellen Moore played defense.
Also refer to the 2010 reader’s guideline.
And even more timely is a great breakdown of the Bronco offensive philosophy put out yesterday by SmartFootball – should be new required reading.
Welcome to the fold. Prepare to be exhilarated with how the Broncos play, frustrated with how many will find excuses to discount the Broncos, and prepared to make up new swear words to describe the vile that is Mark May.

welcome to Bronco Nation!
—Chris Petersen is THE MAN
—Kellen Moore is THE MAN’s Right Hand Man
—Doug Martin is Chuck Norris, except a bit shorter. And a darker skin tone.
—Austin Pettis and Titus Young are one of (if not THE) best receiving duos in the nation. Learn to love them.
—The blue field is NOT gimmicky. It is awesome.
—We hate Mark May.
Lastly, be careful… Justin Corr is easily spooked!
Thank you, Nick Adenhart. You will always be remembered. #34

Doug Martin told Chuck Norris.....
that Chuck Norris is no longer Chuck Norris. The personal formerly known as Chuck Norris is now know as WisheshewasDougMartin- kind of like Flounder or Pinto from Animal House

Quick hits for this year
kellen Moore is a god, he does no wrong
Austin Pettis has magic sticky hands
Coach PetersEn is the best around
Brotzman can’t hit from the left hash
Doug Martin smashes kids who try to “tackle”
Doug Harper does not exist
Mitch Burroughs drops easy catches, gets many bubble screens
You have to choose between team BurrPott or team GeraldBurks(ask Kevan)
Jeron Johnson is a machine on D
Ryan Winterswyk anchors a D-line with a cre consisting of Big Billy Winn, Shea McClellin and Chase Baker
Tevis/Hout/Acrey will anchor the LBs
Iloka is a sure fire tackler, huge potential(FS)
Brandyn Thompson is our best CB, he is hit or miss, great or turrible
O-line is solid, led by Nate Potter
Titus Young is outspoken and a huge deep threat/return threat
After Kirby Moore scores his first TD, it is ok to say “Moore to Moore” but I will flag you if it happens twice.
Welcome to BroncoNation. Whatd I miss?
"You don't play against opponents. You play against the game..." - Bobby Knight
I missed a big one..
Coach PetersEn is the best around
It is Chris PeterSEN not PeterSON. If you see it spelled with an “O” that is your cue to stop reading.

Let the Media's excuse begin...again: "It was Boise State's first game of the year!" whilst completely ignoring that it was VaTech's first game, as well.

I was
waiting for that pic. I love it! If we use it enough maybe he will get that tattooed on himself.
"You don't play against opponents. You play against the game..." - Bobby Knight
O-line is solid, led by Nate Potter
ugg…the one that allowed BOTH sacks…let KM get ate because he was staring a a ghost man in front of him instead of blocking the guy running around his left side…and caused the KM’s fumble (2nd sack).
Nat Potter may be this year’s Brotzman (cringe).
first game, Shrewd…first game…..first game…

I knew I’d take a hit for that. I should of said "best NFL prospect. I’ll give him a few more game to get used to his new spot.

Still dont know how we didnt recover those two fumbles,
Potter and Byrd fell directly ontop of them… =(

agree on best NFL prospect...
…and I know he has to get used to being there…he was just less than awesome last night. Good, yes…but his 2 mistakes were VERY costly.

As a boise state fan, the Offensive Line always takes up a large portion of your worry
Our offensive line changes much more than most teams. Players shifting in out each game, players playing different positions, players doing surprisingly well or poorly.
For example, Potter’s sack and the gut fumble where head smacking, but in between his play was pretty solid. In fact, I thought he showed better leverage and feet than last year. I watched the game a few times and more than once he would just shove the end off of his feet after first contact (I do wish he would then pancake that sucker afterward, he just stands there looking at him). Kellog (backup guard last year, competing for center this year and moved back to guard right before the game) was more inconsistent, but he doesn’t give up – I swear on one play he was beaten inside and got all turned around so the guy was behind him going for Moore, and Kellog just started going backwards into him (it sorta worked).
As a new fan, you should have a preferred oline depth chart in your back pocket to discuss and debate.
Yeah, well, you know, that's just like, uh, your opinion, man
by Dale Applegate on Sep 7, 2010 11:42 PM PDT up reply actions
Mostly guard
I’m not worried about Potter at all. He play guard for all of Spring and Fall camps except for a few plays. I think the O-line will settle in and be very good.
Are there any big Boise State players in the NFL?

There is a pretty good link..
Quintin Mikell and Ryan Clady are both Pro-Bowlers, Kyle Wilson is a 1st round draft pick and Naanee, Carr and Korey Hall have carved out a niche for themselves.

Some pointers, in no particluar order
Fans – Very protective of their team. Sometimes overly sensitive. We know that our conference, the Western Athletic Conference, is weak. We don’t believe that means that the Broncos are weak. For various reasons, we have developed a bitter rivalry with Iowa fans, even though our teams have never played.
OBNUG – A great sports blog. Surprisingly well-written, which is nice because I would probably read it even if it was terrible.
Coaching staff – One of the best in the nation. They find diamonds in the rough, guys who were overlooked, walk-ons, and develop those guys into better players. Lots of college teams get the 1, 2 and 3 star type guys Boise State gets, but those teams don’t develop their recruits and, therefore, aren’t as successful. Plus, Boise State teams rarely seem un- or under-prepared. That’s the coaching.
Kellen Moore – Ice water runs in this guys veins. Doesn’t panic. Makes super quick reads. Coach’s son. Appears to study playbooks and watch tape for fun. Doesn’t have a rocket arm, but makes better decisions than nearly anybody else at the college level right now. Since he is only 6 feet tall and slow, however, he only had offers from a couple teams, including Boise State. May not have the physique to compete at the pro level, but is an amazing college qb.
Blue Turf – Began as basically a marketing gimmick, but, like most things, it has lasted long enough to become tradition. Ducks and geese do not crash into the turf. Except for Oregon Ducks.

For me its...
Kellen Moore

But there are many that could make a case for top three.
"...east and west is the problem, north and south the solution."
Lets split this up...
Defense:
Swyk’
Jeron Johnson
Billy Winn
Offense:
God (Kellen Moore)
Austin Pettis
Titus Young
Special Teams:
PR: Unknown yet…
KR: Titus Young
K/P: Kyle Brotzman, excluding half the left hash now.

Bronco fan in Tennessee!
Although not a recent convert to Bronco Nation, I do go to school in Tennessee, my brother goes to BSU, and I share your love for the Preds! Go Broncos! Just sit back and watch the Broncos do there thing!
The NFL team you are looking for
is the Houston Texans in about 5 years. You see, BSU started slowly (in Major Football terms), just joining 1-A in 1996. Had a rough first few seasons. Then, gradually became dominant, so that now they are considered one of the top football programs. Much like the Houston Texans will be … in about 5 years or so.
Sorry, slightly trolling (I’m a battle red blog member as well as an obnuger :)).
Welcome...
I love Tennessee. Love the “BA” (sporting venue, meh. concert venue, awesome).
Little FYI about the site:
Mr. Fiskers – calls out irresponsible journalism
Munson’d – bad typing and grammar errors in comments (check urban dictionary, it’s there)
It’s KevAn, not Kevin (kinda like Coach Pete)
Mikrino – you will love him or hate him
BW – we try to keep it clean here, so when saying a Bad Word use BW
OBNUG – best blog EVER
I love the colors Orange and Blue. Go Broncos!!! Go Titans!!! BAD WORD Gators!!!
by TitanBronco on Sep 7, 2010 11:02 PM PDT reply actions 1 recs
OBNUG has readers worldwide
Being me. I’m stationed in the AF at a NATO airbase in Germany. Not sure if there are other Nuggies outside of the U.S. besides me.
I hate everyone equally...especially Vandals!
Here is one that may get me in trouble....
There is only ONE Bronco football team, the one in Boise Idaho. The one in Denver is (BW). Boise State had their colors and mascot first. We like to try and keep it clean around here so (BW), or (bw) means bad word.
"Boise State football is now a Fargo winter. You know what's coming, and that information does you no good whatsoever". Matt James / The Fresno Bee
As you can see....
…..if you are on this site regularly, you know your Broncos and you LOVE your Broncos. every once in a while, you’ll get a random interloper (troll) who will extoll the virtues of their team, usually our next opponent, and in the end, spout some nonsense about strength of schedule, wouldn’t win in the (ENTER AQ CONFERENCE NAME HERE), blah blah blah….Just know that as a Bronco fan, you’ve heard it all before and it’s not something that should get under your skin too much.
BRING ON THE COWBOYS
Noel.Diggity.....NO DOUBT!
Just remember
Everything vandal blows.
Also remember, “If you buy a man a drink, you may make a friend. If you teach a man to drink, you go to the U of I.”

Here's some video of important players
Titus young:
Austin Pettis:
Doug Martin:
Winston Venable
Jeron Johnson:
That should be a good jumping off point. I didn’t mention Kellen Moore because I don’t think I have to. He makes our offense. These are just a few notable players that I could find video of, there are so many more aspects to both our offense and defense that I could discuss for hours but its probably better you just pick up as you go along.
