BlogPoll Week 2 Draft: Is Boise State the best team in the country?

With so many cupcakes on the schedule and inevitable sloppy play in Week One, few questions that lingered during the preseason were answered.  Boise State seemingly had the best win of the weekend, but is that enough to propel them to No. 1 on their own fan site? You'd think so, wouldn't you.

Weigh in on OBNUG's BlogPoll after the jump, see where the Broncos landed, and give your thoughts on how the final poll should shake out.

Star-divide

Alabama breezed by San Jose St., and the Crimson Tide remain at No. 1.  Yes Boise State had the marquee win, but the Tide are the defending champs and should stay atop the poll until someone beats them or until they play a more formidable opponent that can provide a better barometer to measure Alabama's inexperienced defense.  The second week of games - and a matchup with Penn State - should give us an answer.

SB Nation BlogPoll College Football Top 25 Rankings "

Moving Up:

  • TCU - The Frogs also passed their season opening test relying on the legs of Andy Dalton and Co. to get past Oregon State. Ha, frog legs.
  • Oregon - Even Justin Corr would not have a facial expression to explain the offensive show the Ducks displayed on Saturday. Hanging 72 is impressive, no matter who it is against. Wilcox and his Volunteer defense will have their work cut out for them this week. And just kidding about the Justin Corr face.

    Justincorrsurprised_medium_medium

"72 points?! Sweet sassy molassey!" (via assets.sbnation.com)

  • South Carolina - Maybe because it was Thursday night and it had been months since I last saw a college football game, but Stephen Garcia and the Gamecocks looked impressive in their victory over Southern Miss.
  • Michigan/Notre Dame: Are either of these teams on their way back?  RichRod seems to have found a quarterback and Kelly is changing the culture in North Bend.  I couldn't rank both, so the winner of next week gets to stay in the poll.

Moving Down:

  • Week one rust: Texas, Oklahoma, and particularly Florida didn't look sharp against what should have been overmatched opponents.
  • Cincinatti: The Bearcats go from Sugar Bowl participants to two-touchdown losers in "The Valley."  Get the motor on the Pat Hill bandwagon warmed up. Where is Graham Watson when you need her? Our nation turns its lonely eyes to you, GW.

How would your poll look?  Even I am not sure what I was thinking with Iowa at No. 5.  Ummmm...did I completely forget about Arkansas?  Anybody else?  Give your suggestions and influence the final poll.

I’d think about moving Oklahoma lower – partly due to sheer dislike and partly due to letting Utah State stay with them the way the Aggies did. I like them at No. 11, but I feel like they deserve to fall.

congratulations boise on a great win and fresno can do you guys a favor in beating illinois and ole miss.

i think they would have 8 or 9 wins and beating them would be another quality win.

I'm all about covering the spread and moneylines. Glory favors the bold. Chance favors the prepared mind. Luck, well i have that too. University of Utah goes to the Pac-12 conference in 2011. I expect them to compete immediately for the conference CG. Brock Lesnar will defeat Cain Velasquez. Womens MMA, the next big thing in sports. Utah and Boise take care of business in week one. Don't be surprised if they both go undefeated.

Hmm

are those arrows on the right accurate? If not, do you have a link to your week 1 ballot? If so:

Oklahoma doesn’t seem to have moved down, and they definitely had a worse game than did Texas.

USC seems to have moved up – this also seems weird.

I dunno about dropping BYU and (adding?) Michigan.

Finally, lol @ VT moving up with the quality loss :).

Overall on the rankings: I’d consider Fresno State. By which I mean consider putting them in the “also considered” box, not actually in the top 25.

Finally, I guess I like that you are keeping 0-1 teams in the top-25 who faced quality opponents, its just a little jarring. And Auburn seems a little high. And, again, Michigan should not be ranked yet. But otherwise awesome!

by killtacular on Sep 7, 2010 8:13 PM PDT reply actions

The arrows are from the week 1 (preseason) ranking

but the preseason ranking was simply a rehash of the final 2009 AP poll so the movement is largely irrelevant.

I feel an 0-1 team that lost by 3 to the team ranked 2nd in the poll certainly belongs in the poll. Top 10 could be debated, but a team should not be penalized just because they did not schedule a cupcake the first game of the year.

Auburn does feel too high at 15. Teams 14 through 30 could are all close. I could see Auburn at #30, but that also goes for Utah, Michigan, Oregon State et al. Look for there to be a lot more movement over the first several weeks as more teams reveal themselves with their resume.

ah cool

I didn’t even think you guys were doing the BlogPoll this year because I don’t remember seeing the first post, so I was unsure.

And ya, it actually seems fairly pointless to really be debating much of this when its only been one week, and only a handful of teams played anyone of any significance.

That said: still weird that BYU drops out while Michigan jumps in. Although, really, thinking about it, UConn is probably fairly comparable competency-wise to UDub, and Michigan had the better win. Ok, never mind. I still think Auburn is too high, but other than that, this is all good :).

after watching your defensive secondary last night

I wouldn’t put you at #2 in the nation

I’d put Oregon ahead of you, simply b/c they’re win was that dominant

they didn’t blow a 17 point lead in their game

You moved Nebraska up a lot after what Nebraska fans told me was a worrisome performance by their defense.

The winner of the FSU-OU and Bama-Penn State games will both be ranked higher than Boise next week, and deservedly so.

by Beergut on Sep 7, 2010 8:45 PM PDT reply actions

Aren't they already ahead of Boise State?

The two winners you are talking about are the number 1 team in the country and the number 2 team in the country. That isnt much of a point.

by SwftMnky on Sep 7, 2010 8:57 PM PDT up reply actions

OU = Oklahoma. The team that is ahead of Boise State is the Ohio State University = tOSU (possibly OSU, if you aren’t reading a snarky blog).

you are mixing up Florida State with Miami: it is Miami who plays Ohio state this week.

well

Well, if Bama wins, they definitely deserve to be ranked higher than Boise. I suppose, by that same token, possibly also for Penn State, although that is much more arguable.

But thats just stupid about the FSU-OU winner. Its stupid because it won’t happen, and its stupid because it shouldn’t happen. I could go into detail, but its not really worth it.

I disagree

Niether FSU or penn State should jump boise

My outlook:

OU, out of the top 10. USC, out of the top 20. UF, out of the top 15, LSU, out of the top 25. First week jitters, I can understand, but not against the type of opponents these guys faced. You need to be more punishing against these teams, because they should be earning their ranks. Particularly LSU. Do you really think they should be ranked at all?

Who would you add if LSU is dropped?

I am not sold on LSU either, but no one else below them had a particularly impressive win. I gave UNC a free-pass at #25 since I thought they were top 10 before the suspension and they nearly pulled off the LSU win.

I didn’t see the OU game, but I gave them the benefit of the doubt since I feel Utah St could be more pesky than Miami Ohio and Rice.

Not sure of what to make of USC. Their defense looked worse than horrible, but they are still uber talented. I would be comfortable moving them out based on the defense against Hawaii and let them prove something this week.

"...east and west is the problem, north and south the solution."

by MKingery on Sep 7, 2010 9:31 PM PDT up reply actions

the thing with this is

Florida completely shot themselves in the foot offensively against Miami. Their defense was pretty dominant. Rice may well be worse than Utah State (god, as an alumni of Rice, that hurts to type), but Texas was never in any danger of losing. OU could have lost that game against Utah State, and OU’s defense gave up 341 yards passing to Borel. In other words, Florida had a strength (defense) and Texas had a strength (never in danger of losing), while OU had neither of those strengths. USU might be slightly better than the other teams, but OU had the most complete team-wide failure of either of the other two “good” teams.

I was so conflicted when I was at rice when they played BSU. On the one hand, it was BSU. On the other hand, I was like a 19 year old from Idaho in Houston, and all my friends were adamant about tailgating and cheering on our football team (which I had also done, and continued to do, for every other game). To my credit (?) I did end up cheering for BSU and pissing off all my friends. But still.

Bronco's Best Team in the Nation?????

Please winning 1 game against an overrated Virginia Tech and just barely pulling that out. Boise needs to play at least 5 top 25 teams with 2 of them being in the top 10 before saying they are the best team in the country. Granted they are good but could they remain undefeated in a real conference. Please the WAC. No wonder they go undefeated each year. The WAC is even worse than the MWC, which has 3 good teams being UTAH, TCU and BYU. I just don’t understand the hype. Look at your schedule Bronco’s it’s soft, no you should not be rated in the top 10.

Bronco Hype

I’ve seen this all before. BYU and the glory years. But you know what! Who did they really play in their conference? Answer no one. Yes they can get up for the big games just like Boise but could they sustain it week after week. Don’t think so.

The truth

The simple fact is that many teams have ducked Boise for years, They use the lame excuse that the Bronco’s stadium doesn’t hold emough people to justify their time to go and play there. Boise would gladly go on the road to play anyone anywhere. TRUTH is that they didn’t want to get beat!

Said for you but true

BSU won’t be in the Title Game.

by BigOskey on Sep 7, 2010 10:49 PM PDT up reply actions

Strength of Schedule

First off I understand that BSU could probably not go unscathed in most of the BCS conferences. However, BSU would be more than happy to play in those conference but those conferences refuse to let them in. Also, last year BSU talked with 15-20 of YOUR BCS schools about playing games and didn’t get any takers.

SOS issimply computers and people who make up who the media say are the best teams. SOS like RPI is a bunch of garbage.

So there are a few issues here. First they would play more BCS teams if those teams would play them. However, those team won’t because if they lose to BSU and then lose a conference game they are toast. Read Gobbler Country and you will see how VT feels about the loss. Second, BSU can only do what is given them. They would play a tougher schedule if they could but who prevents this? BCS conferences.

So quit your whining and tell YOUR schools to man up. All of your arguments point to YOUR own schools in the BCS being at fault for what has occurred. Time and Time again with one game on the line BSU has taken care of those BCS schools.

by BNation325 on Sep 8, 2010 8:22 AM PDT up reply actions

What yall played was a basically 3-4 loss VT team....(Frank Beamer isnt the world's best big game coach, kinda like Bob Stoops)

Got all the love in the preseason, just like Ole Miss did last year for some reason, and they weren’t a good football team, and on top of that, nor were they a well coached football team.
The reason most teams won’t play a home and home is money. Why spend money to go play in front of 30k fans, when you can play for well over 100k fans, week in and week out?
I didnt see why a middling ACC team is the gauge of anything special. When we were coming off a 7-5 season and Clemson was ranked number 3 of all things, we found out really quick how “great” Clemson turned out to be. Lets let things shake out til about Oct 16th and then we will see how good this “win” over VT turns out. I know Boise St fans will be pulling for VT to go undefeated the rest of the way to prove how “good” this win is, but more times than not, VT will let you down, about 3 more times with Georgia Tech, Miami and Virginia, possibly Boston College….Enjoy the win, and hopefully we will see ya in the BCS.

by mrpelicanpants on Sep 8, 2010 9:10 AM PDT up reply actions

I didnt click on the link but if its the 2 for 1 offer...

Boise is looking for a home and home series, our AD has said he will pay anyone as much money as they will pay us to come and play in Boise.

The problem is no team wants to, or I should say the AD’s of those schools dont want too.

Why would you? (BCS teams play Boise) Its not a given that you will lose but there is certainly a higher statistical chance that a team like, Texas, Florida, Oklahoma, will be more worried about losing than they would be when facing a FCS team. Losing to Boise, right now, in the current perception of the media is about as worse as it gets for a AQ team.

Now I think that if that perception changes (Saying Boise becomes a continual top 10 team) then teams will be more willing to play us. That way if they were to lose it would be “They lost to Boise, consistent top 10, so its okay” and not Oh its lil ol’ Boise State, the team that could.

And shame on you for not putting Boise at #1 – no one would fault you for it, and if Alabama loses to Penn State I will be very disappointed if the Broncos are not your #1.
