MUNSON'S GAZETTA: VENI, VIDI, VICIT

My paraphrase of Julius Caesar's introduction to his Commentary on the Pontian War is intended to be translated as "I came, I saw, THEY conquered". As we stand on the threshold of this most momentous year, I have been rhapsodizing about what I have witnessed here. My arrival in Boise in '68 coincided propitiously with the Broncos first season as a college, and I have lived almost everyone of those intervening years within walking distance of Bronco stadium. In fact, I used to jog by it well before the term "jogging" was coined, when "running shoes" were sprinter's flats and no one had a clue why you were doing "double time". I was inspired to write this by a Wall Street Journal article about us; the guy must've gone back to the archives 'cuz he referenced our game against  Chico State. Well, I SAW that game, and in fact it was the incredible sideline scamper by a Chico State return guy that first got me to realize that there were some  athletes in that stadium. I can see it now as if it's happening, although the precise area of the stadium is actually now the track. I wanted this to be a capsule history, but I can't do it. I've tried. I keep going back, losing the "thread"-I typed several paragraphs and then erased it because it was incoherent. Those of you familiar with my typing know what a sacrifice that was.

So I'll toss the laboring oar to the readership; you'll have to do the heavy lifting on this one (how's that for an especailly bad mixed metaphor?) I'm going to talk about one game, played in November 1971, and have it represent all I could say about where we were, where we are, and what transpired to get us here. You'll have to pull apart the bones to get at the meat of this one.

November 1971: C of I versus Boise State, Bronco Stadium. Boise State had lost a tough game to ISU the week before; team was seriously down. Having stunningly demolished Idaho in the season opener, the loss to ISU meant no Big Sky crown (Idaho won it, ironically). 'Yotes had  also lost the week before , but their inspired come-from-behind play against Lewis & Clark (Portland-yeah they had a team, years before Monica) had given them some "edge". 'Yotes had a few players, most memorably Ed Jones, who should have been called "Big" but wasn't. Think Fat Albert in pads; his looked like little pancakes atop a mountainous pile of humanity. Not necessarily a gifted athlete, he was a relentless one at OG, and anywhere he was Broncos were flying back. Bill Schow was our (I was a Yote) middle linebacker, and he must've made 16 solo tackles that day. Anthony ("Tony") Quinn was a freshman safety and very good (as my soon-to-be-ex-fiance was about to find out). Overall the talent wasn't as one-sided as you might think, and had Quinn not hit  Bronco QB Eric Guthrie's pass up in the air, thus allowing the sure handed Don Hutt to make a sensational one handed grab and go untouched to the end zone, 'Yotes might've held Broncos scoreless in the 1st half. As it was, 'Yotes led 7-6 going in (which must've raised eyebrows around the Big Sky).

The second half was again pretty even, until (and this was perceptible) the Broncos said to themselves "heck, we're in a game, we might as well win it", and did. Final score: Broncos 28, C of I 21. Last time they would ever play, and C of I, which had around 800 students, gave up football before the decade was out. Indeed, of the teams Broncos played in their debut collegiate season, only one still plays football-Weber State ( who kicked our (bw)-then). Ever heard of Westminster, a Catholic college in Salt Lake City? Think what a Catholic school had going on in SLC 40 years ago (or now) and how many guys it could've gotten to come out for football. We played 'em-and won (yay!).

Yep I saw those games. Didn't see our first game against Weber; it was away and I didnt venture behind the Zion Curtain much then. Glad I didn't; Statesman ran a spread on game-day that showed this giant Wildcat covering the top of the sports page. Prophetic-we lost 44-0, and it sounded (radio) a lot worse.

Back to '71; although not Big Sky champs (vanquished Idaho was) Broncos went to Camellia Bowl and won their first bowl as a college (they had been JUCO champs). Camellia memorable for a couple of reasons. We won on a controversial play when Hutt (best hands-EVER!) got the bounce off another Bronco. Some thought it should've been ruled incomplete but it turned out that was OK in college, not pros. Then we had to give trophy back back years later when it was discovered that  Guthrie had played some professional minor league baseball. There was talk of getting it back after NCAA changed rules but I don't know status.

If you've read this far, in the right frame of mind, you'll be ready for this-Alabama, Ohio State, Boise State. In the memory of one not really aged (c'mon) fan to encompass all this? Heck the guys who named the team, picked its colors, and the one who elevated it from the JUCO to the college level are all still alive. Alabama and Ohio State were legendary college programs whilst we were'nt even knee high to a grasshopper in collegiate football terms. And while I don't know if we'll get the chance, nor can I predict the outcome, I'll say this-we could play them, and anyone who says otherwise is either lying, stupid, ill-informed, or deliberately ignorant.

Coming from 42 years back,  that's saying a mouthful.

New rule, maybe....

But I bet some of the extra add-on notes would be avoided with the option to edit our posts…. Of course, there would be no excuse to “Munson” typos….!

I strongly dislike these new "rules" that you speak of

Let the Media's excuse begin...again: "It was Boise State's first game of the year!" whilst completely ignoring that it was VaTech's first game, as well.

Agreed.

Munson is quirky, and I wouldn’t have it any other way!

Oh, I don't dislike them for his sake...purely selfish motives here (though I know you were giving him crap, bare with me!)...

…have you ever seen one of my fanshots? pretty sure i have the first 3 comments on all of them! Of course I, like munson, am notorious for also commenting to myself as well…I mean seriously…if we implemented these rules, who would I talk to…actual real life internet people???!!!

No way, I say…I’ll stick to talking to my real life internet self, thank you very much!!

"Quirky"? Based upon what I'm used to be called (deservedly, I must admit) that constitutes a compliment.

4ever-not sure I want to blog on that one. Near-suicide, incarceration (both penal & health-related),

expulsion, attempted betrayal by my “intended” with my best friend,75 stitches in forehead with still discernible “Frankenstein” trace from scalp to nose, flames and razors-nope, not going there. Still have nice scar across wrist-I think of it as “Kathy’s bracelet”.

Good article indeed

I appreciate your wordy history/context expose’s, Tmunson. I enjoy learning more about the history of Boise State Football, and I have learned much of it from your Gazettas. Keep up the youthful, yet wise energy. As a relative newcomer (99, 2000), I can always gain more of an appreciation for my school and my team. Cheers!

Munson is a living archive of Boise State football history

When you write it like it was yesterday, it puts this lofty place we are now and how we got here into perspective. Some of these younger guys who’s daddy might have only been a toddler in ‘71 can’t have a true perspective of how recent 1971, or 1968 is. Good stuff.

Thanks for the history lesson and perspective.

It’s important for us to remember where BSU came from in order to appreciate how mind-blowing the current situation is.

Nice read - yet again

Although it helps to read with a beer in hand and some music in the background… helps the reading go down smoother.

Are you going to DC?

Can't-but I'm already working on Mississippi next year.

It will be right around our 30th wedding anniversary; she wants to got to Rome, I’m angling for Oxford (Miss.) Thee readership has already weighed in with helpful comments but I must confess overall there has not been much optimism that I can pull it off. Apparently leaves don’t get “fall like” in the south plus its way to early. Once she finds out there’s a game the jig is up so I need to get her onboard with this relatively soon.

As much as I love the Broncos

There’s nothing more important than your family. You’ll never regret taking her to Rome. Plus, that gesture should be good for at least 5 BCS trips! :-)

Sorry you can’t be in DC – we’ll remember you in spirit.

Schow had a "Prince Valiant" style haircut, fashionable in the day, and appropriate as

his play remains the most valiant display by a defensive collegiate player I have ever witnessed. Like Butkus, also a MLB, maybe you beat his team, but not him.

Jogging: there was this weird sociology prof at Boise State who was into running years before it became popular in the

early 70’s. He made his own shoes; I recall them looking like someone stitched together various carpet samples. Dude went about 6’4", with butch haircut and Van Dyke beard (way before Willis et al) . In winter he’d doen one of those Russian-style fur caps but still wore shorts and only a long sleeve shirt. I had a class and he told us about some kid he was counseling (kinda’ odd; sociologists, as opposed to psychologists, don’t do individual stuff as a rule). Kis ahd a room with a black light where he’d withdraw to to listen to music. Prof had problem with it; said ti “wasn’t reality”. I remeber he suggested to class kid “get into jogging”. I remember thinking how “real” was it to slog around with carpet attatched to yoru feet lookin like a (bw) Russian refugee.

Oh boy

Now you’ve stirred up some memories, munson. I vaguely recall the cat the made his own shoes. I was a big runner back then.

I Still think of the prof as "Zeke" 'cuz he was such a geek and the name seemed to fit; I remember him as a sociologist.

Time frame "72-75. If you were a big runner and ran around Bosie State/Julia Davis park you’d run (pun intended) into him. Wore white long sleeved shirts year round, plus shorts, year round. He’d put on gloves when it was super chill but that was it. Never got close look at shoes but they wee big clumsy looking mothers although guy ran fairly fast.

Hmm

I came to town in ‘77 but I swear I know who you’re talking about. And I ran a lot on the Greenbelt. Interesting.

by kcam on Sep 1, 2010 10:41 AM PDT reply actions   1 recs

I should have explained-those were years I remember him at Boise State.

I dropped in and out in the day. I finished in ‘77-78 after a 2 1/2 year hiatus. I didnt run (pun again) into him again but he probably was still here and even teaching. I think I dropped out of his class in ’75, or he might’ve been a guest lecturer. I only remember one lecture from him when he talked about this kid. 70’s being a hangover of the 60’s-you know how it is.
And you’re rigth-if you saw him you wouldnt forget it. He went 6’4" if he went an inch, skinny, with that Bolshevik-bomb-throwing-Maynard-G-Krebs damn Van Dyke, relentlessly galloping-hippy/communist if Boise ever had one. He was on the greenbelt no doubt.
