Ramifications to Boise State should they lose to VT

Let me state right off the bat that I am Virginia Tech fan and alum.   I am not confient of VT's chances on Labor Day vs Boise State.  I expect VT to lose but, of course, hopeful we'll pull out a win.

But... what do you think the ramifications are to BSU Football should they lose?

Coming from a VT fan, and just from the perspective of a college football fan, it feels like BSU football has been steadily working towards the 2010 football season.  The pre-season and post-season rankings for Boise have been rising and this season, after the great 2009. seems like the culmination of all that hard work.

Now, for Labor Day (and I guess 2010 as a whole) the stars all seem to be in aligned for a great year.  Experienced team.  More college football fans becoming aware of Boise State and what they are capable of.

But what if Boise should lose to VT?  How many steps backward does it mean for Boise State?  A loss on opening day (even if VT goes on to a good season) eliminates Boise from Nat'l Championship consideration and quite possibly from a BCS game.  Then, how many players leave in between the 2010 and 2011 season?  Throw in a new conference and a tougher schedule in 2011.  What are the long term (and immediate) ramifications of a Boise State loss to Virginia Tech on Labor Day?
