Boise State far and away Phil Steele's WAC team of the decade

College football worshiper Phil Steele has taken it upon himself to come up with the best team from each conference over the past 10 years, which was not exactly the toughest job in the world when it comes to the WAC.

Boise State is obviously the choice for the WAC's team of the decade, and the disparity between the Broncos and the everyone elses is simply remarkable. Gloat over the glorious details after the jump. Can you guess the one area where the Broncos are more pedestrian than usual? I've got the skinny on that, too.

It's Boise State, a crevasse the size of the Pacific Ocean, and then everyone else

This chart makes Karl Benson sad.

From the Steele man himself:

With all factors considered, Boise St is clearly the team of the decade for the WAC with more than triple the number of points than 2nd place Fresno. Boise St has lost 4 WAC games in 9 years and is 61-2 since in their last 8 years! That is remarkable!

Tell me about it!

To recap the stunning numbers, for stunningness' sake:

  • The Broncos have lost 21 fewer conference games than second place Fresno. At the rate BSU is going, it will take 50 years for the Broncos to lose often enough to catch the Bulldogs.
  • Boise State has been a Top 25 team at an every-other-year pace. Fresno and Hawaii have been Top 25 at an every-other-decade pace.
  • Take away the Broncos, and the WAC has zero BCS bowl wins, zero Top Ten appearances, and two total Top 25 appearances in the past 10 years.

Who will be the WAC team of the next decade?

Of course, Boise State will not be around long enough to garner team of the next decade for the WAC (unless BSU wins the national title this year in which case its one-year WAC resume for the next decade might be better than everyone else's). That means a new WAC decade champion will be crowned. Any guesses on who it will be?

Fresno State. The Bulldogs seem to have the most to gain with Boise State's departure, at least winning-wise. Pat Hill knows how to coach an also-ran, which will probably be good enough to challenge for the WAC title on a year-in, year-out basis once BSU bolts.

Nevada. Keep in mind that the Kaeperbot will be gone after this season, so the Wolf Pack could be pre-Kaepernick mediocre all over again. Chris Ault is still in charge, and I'm not sure it's a good thing (neither are Pack fans).

Hawaii. The Warriors seem to be sliding down a slippery slope of blahness, hastened by the Slip 'N Slide of Greg McMackin. It's to the point where local columnists are talking about going independent and even the trash blowing through the Aloha Stadium field is bummed out. The Warriors always seem to be competitive, but they are far from the glory days of Brennan and Co.

Idaho. NOT!

Louisiana Tech. I suppose that Sonny Dykes' new aerial offense could be a raving success and propel the Bulldogs to the top of the WAC for years to come. Or it could cause Ross Jenkins to spontaneously combust. There's really no way of knowing.

My best guess: the Fresno State Bulldogs. And yes, I realize the irony in my crowning them champion before any games have been played. Did preseason polls from 2002-2008 teach me nothing?

The only thing keeping the Broncos from utter domination: Bowl wins

Sad news to report from the Boise State WAC domination front. Boise State is not head-and-shoulders better than other WAC teams in bowl wins. The Broncos are tied with Fresno at four, and Hawaii is right behind with three. Here is how the Broncos have done over the past decade. Do your best to diagnose the problem.

Versus BCS teams, the Broncos are not too shabby with wins over Iowa State and Oklahoma and The Loss Of Which We Do Not Speak to Boston College.

Versus non-BCS and ranked teams, the Broncos are a little more mediocre. Losing to East Carolina and good-but-not-great TCU will do that to you.

There are a couple ways that I choose to interpret this info.

  1. The Broncos tend to play non-BCS teams in years when BSU isn't good enough to get into a BCS bowl. Therefore, when the Broncos have a down year, they stand a better chance of losing to a team possibly firing on all cylinders.
  2. The Broncos get up for big-name bowls against big-time teams, and not always the opposite. You cannot tell me with a straight face that the Hawaii Bowl was the Broncos' best performance. You can very much tell me that last year's Fiesta was one of Boise State's better-played games.

Your turn

What do you make of Boise's bowl problems? Does seeing BSU's WAC domination ever get old? Who is your pick to be the next WAC team of the decade? Share your thoughts in the comments.
