Kudos to Coach Graham for "Doing the Right Thing"
No matter if a team I support is winning or losing, I want to be proud of the team's work ethic and values. On Saturday night, Coach Graham sent a clear message to his graduating class that hard work, teamwork, and people are more important than wins. Sound familiar to the mantra Coach Pete plays by? By starting senior Nate Larsen, a walk-on with a tremendous work ethic who barely played the entire season, Coach gave one student athlete a well-deserved experience of a lifetime. Larsen ended the game with one point (his only point at home the entire season), but I'll bet he will never forget that point.
Should teams place the development of young men over winning?

I believe "doing the right thing" always pays off in the long-term. Too many organizations (businesses; teams; etc) focus on short-term results at the expense of long-term success. Winning requires a culture of respect, strong values, and hard work. Only by exemplifying these values can a team embrace them and adapt them to their own lives. It is not surprising the team responded with a resounding win: they respected Coach's decision and responded accordingly. Perhaps most importantly, Coach Graham sent his four seniors off with a life lesson I'm sure they'll never forget. Your thoughts?

Should teams place the development of young men over winning?
Absolutely. Its the development that ultimately leads to winning. When everyone on the team is in sync, and not just the star athletes, then you become an unstoppable force. (ie BSU football)
Not to mention its college – these kids might not ever get to play the sport again on an organized level, so give em’ a chance to shine I say.

Of course hes going to start him...
That is what Senior Night is for.
All coaches start their seniors whether they are good enough or not…
And if he really preached those things the wins would be coming. Its easy to say those words but its more important to see the actions thoughout the entire year.
Old enough to know better, too young to care.
In the poll...
If a NCAA coach makes his primary purpose to “Develop the core values of student athletes” that have committed themselves to his or her charge then I would contend the rest of the choices will follow as a result.
Absolutely - Core Values Lead to Success
It’s funny how many teams sacrifice long-term success for short-term gains. The most common example is when a team will allow star athletes to receive light disciplinary sentences so they can play in important games. It sends a horrible message to the team and erodes the culture of discipline and hard work that are so necessary for success.
Every time I see Coach Pete lay down the law – no matter the caliber of athlete or importance of the game, I think “Thank God we’ve got Coach Pete”.

Core values lead to respect
Although I am a graduate of one of your rival WAC schools, I have had enormous respect for your football program ever since your first Fiesta Bowl trip, after I read an article on sportsillustrated.com by a reporter who followed your team around for the week preceding the game. It was from that article that I learned what a class act your coach and your program are both on and off the field. So, while I always root for my school to win when we play each other, outside of that I always pull for Boise State in other contests because I think major college football needs an example of how success and integrity are not mutually exclusive.
Now, if you can just find a basketball coach who can consistently win games while following the same philosophy…
yes, you need a new basketball coach. does coach pete have a brother.
I'm all about covering the spread and moneylines. I was building a house, I don't deserve this, deserves have nothing to do with it. Bang. "Unforgiven" I drink your milkshake. I drink it up! "There Will BE Blood"
