Right now, we can only dream.

They need to have these talks while we’re kicking butt in football season; not when our BBall team is sucking up this badly.

Ugh…

Realisticly Academics is what will hold us back.

Geographically we are a perfect fit. But Academically…. Every PAC-10 school has many doctorate programs that we simply do not. Football wise I fear no teams in the PAC-10. Maybe they will let us in just for football like they do for wrestling. They might be scared of that though because from what I understand BSU’s wrestling team is one of the top-teir in the PAC-10.

Boise State’s wrestling team is top-teir in the Pac-10. They are decent.

So is our Tennis team!

Unfortunately, those sports probably aren’t considered for athletic conference expansion.

The only good news about Tennis is that the PAC-10 commish just came from leading up the PAC-10 Tennis Federation of something-or-other, right?

Actually, it does help some. The Pac-10 touts itself as “The Conference of Championships” and likes to count and boast about every single championship they can get. Ref: UCLA.

More like...

Stanford likes to boast every single championship. Maybe not boast, but they do win a lot of championships. Doesn’t the PAC-10 win the Director’s Cup (not sure of the name of the award for best overall conference)?

I love the colors Orange and Blue. Go Broncos!!! Go Titans!!! BAD WORD Gators!!!

Stanford also has about 300 obscure sports that it competes in. It’s the national champion by default, because nobody else except Saint Mary’s School for the Blind or Harvard.

If they were to expand

and were serious about keeping the conference close-knit geographically, i think 2 logical choices would be Boise State and Utah, or perhaps BYU.

But yes, as BSUoverU said, academics will probably hold us back. Although, with all the extra cash we would be getting, a lot of that could be used to fund new buildings/programs and get our academics up to par…

Thank you, Nick Adenhart. You will always be remembered. #34

There are a lot of reasons why this will never happen:

and none of them have to do with football, which has proven itself very competitive

1. BSU’s other sports are not good
2. Boise is not anywhere near a major media market, and is already within the league’s TV footprint
3. Academics at BSU are a joke. UI is the m.uch better fit academically and historically, but their athletic programs are a joke. University presidents have made it clear that research universities are a must.

Surely you are just talking about basketball, right ATQ?

Because otherwise it looks like you are talking out of your..bill.

Boise State has a top-ten wrestling team, a perennial top-25 men’s tennis team, women’s gymnastics and soccer teams that won conference titles last season, and very good indoor and outdoor track and field teams with individual national champions the last few years.

I can sign on to the academics argument, to a degree (although you make Boise State sound like a third-rate alternative school, which makes my diploma worthless, apparently), but to say that BSU’s other sports aren’t good is patently ridiculous. Also, Boise State is a research university, but haven’t yet garnered the majority of the state funding in that area.

Oh…and how’s that powerful Corvallis and Eugene media market treating you?

Rec'd and agreed Drew.

How about that massive Pullman market? I guess its just easy to discount everything with no real attempt at weighing pro and cons. Fortunately, I think PAC10 will evaluate the process a little more in depth than Ducks fans will.

I understand, I wouldn’t want to lose to us every year either.

Boise State - The best in all the land (The "land" being Idaho, and large parts of California, Oregon, and Nevada.)

State of Idaho – Population: 1,545,801 (2009 est.)

State of Oregon – Population: 3,825,657 (2009 est.)
-Portland Metro Area – Population: 2,207,462 (2008 est.)

In regards to the UI or BSU academics, the difference really comes with the fact that UI is a National University, and BSU is a Master’s University (Though, a well regarded one at that). According to the Carnegie Classifications, Boise State is not a research university, as it did not grant enough doctorate degrees to qualify as such.

In regards to discussion over the qualifications of existing Pac-10 teams, you should note that UO, OSU, Cal and UW are charter members of the Pac-10.

eh, but $$$ talks

utah at this point is the no brainer and pac 10 could definitely steal them from the mwc.

then who else?!

BYU? apparently no.

Colorado would be the next logical (academically-wise) choice. but they prolly won’t leave the big 12. unless, again, the money was right.

i’m pretty sure you’re over-rating dUI’s academics. i can’t dispute the number of programs. though dUI has been cutting programs AND entire colleges (hello, or should i say goodbye, college of letters, or whatever it’s called). and, unfortunately, that report about the 26% grad rate coming out isn’t necessarily a “gold star”. the argument to that, i say for the longest time, BSU was the only cost effective choice for higher education in the valley. there is college of idaho and NNU, but they are quite a bit more expensive. Treasure valley comm coll is in ontario, oregon. this means BSU gets all the other students who want some sort of education, but don’t have the $$$ to go elsewhere. now that there is the college of WESTERN idaho (that spun off of BSU) i expect that number to jump. they get the “castaway” students and avoids bsu from taking those negative hits.

TV market size and revenue will drive this dog (#'s courtesy of Scott Slant)

Boise’s TV market size (#112) more so than academics will probably doom BSU’s inclusion into the PAC 10. Pundits seem to be talking up Utah (#31) and Colorado (#16)as the schools most likely to receive an invite, and I have to agree. If this occurred, it would make it more likely that BSU would end up in the MWC to replace Utah. Assuming the MWC is granted BCS status, this would work as well for BSU as any scenario involving the PAC 10.

Colorado

I really don’t understand Colorado being considered a front runner. Why? Ok, they have a larger tv market and have more distinction academically, but those aren’t the main reasons for inviting a school into your conference. It’s about the football and basketball teams. And what in the world does Colorado have going for them in either sport? I’m not up to date exactly on their basketball team, but I know they were pretty terrible last year. And the football team is going absolutely no where, and fast. Colorado is still suffering from the sactions put on them. Does the PAC 10 really want to add a team suffering from sactions and is not on the rise at all? Colorado just does not make any sense to me for the PAC 10.

Only hope...

I don’t believe Boise will be invited to the PAC-10. I do think one of Boise’s best assets is to show how Boise State has grown. Boise has shown, if you give them money, they will expand to bigger and better things.
