They should talk Hedrick into Greyshirting...
I don't know if he would be open to it, but it would space him out from Southwick a little, and give him at least 2 years as the presumptive nominee. It is good to have competition, and the best guy will play, but one and done Tharp year(s) are not ideal. I hope maybe since he didn't want to enroll early, he might consider enrolling on time but paying his own way for the first semester. He could stand to get a little bigger, it looks like.

The longer he stays available, the better.
2014 is probably the first time he’ll hit the field. I dont think he’ll beat out Southie, who will take over in 2012 with 2 years left.

I agree.
It would be ideal to have Southwick and Hedrick overlap each other as little as possible. It’s always great to have depth at QB, but you don’t want a stud QB sitting on the bench.

A hesitant yes...
I’d have to see them practice…it may be a moot question, there might be a noticable difference between them when they play against college defenses.

isn't every quarterback the 'next best thing?'
Coughlin, Lomax, Tharp, Hamdan….
Everyone gets the early hype—-and may not pan out. Naanee anyone???
18 months ago, Hamdan appeared to be in a close race to start with Kellen. Really? Remember his SR start against Fresno after being in the program for five years? And isn’t Southwick supposed to be taking the #2 from Coughlin next year?
There is a lot of gray area around QB recruits. Every team likes to have one per year (we had two last year to make up for Lomax exit). If Kellen does go down, we definitely need to have backups who are ready to go.
And remember, if you grayshirt Hendrick, is an even higher profile QB going to come here if there is already a guy on campus in his redshirt class? Plus, a greyshirt doesn’t get to run the scout team or go through the fall season. The 2010 experiences for freshmen who redshirt will be valuable too, especially if there is a BCS bowl in the mix. I doubt Hendrick would even be here if grayshirting were the offer.
This is another great example of the importance of solid judgment by the coaching staff. They will get the right attitudes. Get ridiculous depth at every position and sort it out later. Coach Pete and crew will figure this out. If he is good enough, they will get him on the field (Vinnie P anyone???) until Kellen is done stuffing the record book.
