MT: LOST recap and favorite TV shows (Now with more poll!)

OBNUG friends,

I would like to try something new in the FanPosts section this offseason, in part because it feels like it has been eight months since BSU football ended and in part because you guys are really interesting and I want our community to grow.

The new something is called the Marty Tangent, and I think it will be a lot of fun. (Note: I also thought Crazy Taxi on Gamecube was going to be a lot of fun, and I was very wrong. In other words, I cannot be trusted at a GameStop or, possibly, with blog features.)

The MT will serve as the host of all off-topic conversation during the week. It is my hope that we will all grow closer as a community through discussions about TV, other sports, places to eat, robot singularity, Stuart Scott's lazy eye Stuart Scott's catchphrases, and the like. Anything goes; well, anything except for Boise State football because everything else on this site kind of already covers that (and will continue to, no worries).

Inspiration for the MT came from SB Nation's Portland Trailblazers blog where they go off-topic in daily FanPosts about whatever tickles their fancy. The Trailblazer bloggers assure me this off-topic post thing is a good idea. That is why I am holding them personally responsible if it fails.

The rules are simple: One Marty Tangent per week, and each new week starts on Monday. Anyone can post the Marty Tangent for the week. Same commenting rules apply, except instead of not being allowed to have off-topic conversations you may only have off-topic conversations. Make sense?

For those of you who despise off-topic conversation, I trust that a once-a-week MT will not be too much of a distraction. Ignore at will. And if it really bothers you, shoot me an email and I will appease you with Baja Fresh gift certificates.

Let's get to it ...

  • If you're a LOST fan, did you catch this week's episode? Oh my goodness. The guy with the thing at the place?! Epic.
  • If you're not a LOST fan, what is your favorite TV show? Please don't say College Gameday Final.

Haven't watched Lost yet

But I’m intrigued. I’ve never got around to watching Lost but between you guys and a close friend who says it’s pretty good, I’m curious.

There’s three shows I’m really into right now.

The Office. I’ve watched since day one. Unfortunately I’ve been enjoying the reruns a lot more than the newer episodes lately.

Rescue Me. Might be my favorite show right now. However I get the feeling not many people in the OBNUG community share my enjoyment with this show.

Entourage. I like this show a lot but on the other hand I’m glad there’s an off-season.

And by the way, College Gameday Final usually just pisses me off. For some reason I expect a Boise State player to get a helmet sticker every Saturday night. Big dummies.

You can watch all the back seasons of Lost on hulu. 4 seasons * I don’t know, 12 episodes per season * 45 minutes per episode (once commercials get taken out) = a big chunk of your life catching up on Lost.

by Egnowit on Feb 15, 2010 3:05 PM PST up reply actions

more like...

5 seasons. 24episodes in seasons 1-3.. (72)… 12 in Season 4.. (84).. 17 in season 5 (101). roughly.. That’s also I think with a couple episodes being 2hrs long. I can’t really remember. I just know there’s over 100 episodes.. So 101×45minutes roughly 4545minutes.. about
75-77hrs of non-stop Lost! I did it in less than a week to catch up for this season, even though I had seen them all atleast twice before. Can you?……. Let’s just say I’m obsessed.?

I’m in the same boat. I really would like to watch Lost. It sounds like it has a good flavour that many people love. But, I also hate ranted and raved shows that turn out to be nothing (most reality TV series’). So, we’ll see how it goes.

At the moment, my wife and I try to get rid of stress by watching the following together:

  • The Mary Tyler Show [Hulu]
  • Scrubs (on season 2 atm) [letmewatchthis.com]
  • Gundam Wing (finished all the Gundam’s, figured we’d go back to our favorite to cap it off) [own collection]
  • NBC (The Office, 30 Rock) [hulu]
  • West Wing [Netflix]

It’s safe to say we like a wide variety. We have several categories to keep ourselves interested in case one series goes into writers block. Lost will probably replace West Wing once we’re done with that.

how far

have you made it through the west wing? It seems like me and my girlfriend like similar shows, and we usually tend to watch shows we like through till they’re done, but we couldn’t finish west wing (it was good at the start, but really went downhill at the end).

by killtacular on Feb 15, 2010 10:32 PM PST up reply actions

Um...

We have the 1st season decrypted from Netflix to an external storage drive, but have yet to begin it. We won’t start the 2nd season until we determine we like it enough to go on.

I’ll let you know how it goes in a Marty Cosine Tangent a month or so from now.

Anime.

Wife and I are likers of anime as long as it’s not childish, bloody, or full of “fan service.” Oh, it also has to have a good plot.

Is very good. I loved the Gundam Wing series. Dragon Ball Z is what draged me in years ago though. I also like the Macross series and my buddy and I watched the Ninja Scrolls for the billionth time a few weeks ago.

Gundam Wing....

In a nut shell follows Follows 5 mobile suit pilots who come to Earth to stop the earth sphear allince from oppresing the space collonies. They fight in giant mobile suits called Gundams because they are made from a very strong alloy called gundanium. It is a very involed story line with plenty of twist and turns. One of my favorite animes. Here is a link to the first part of episode one.

Relena is a great character… very creepy, but also great. They seem to get most everything right in Gundam Wing.

But it also makes me wonder why we can’t use the Earth’s la-grange points for space stations. Stupid solar wind.

Jrig, do yourself a favor...

Watch the original BBC Office. It may make you like the U.S. version even more…or curse it as a lazy knockoff. Personally, I think the BBC version with Ricky Gervais is actually funnier. Gervais’ David Brent character is even more of a cringe-worthy shlub than Carrell’s Michael Scott. The Dwight character might be better than his UK counterpart, Gareth and the Jim character is probably a “push” with the BBC’s “Tim”.

All in all, if you like the U.S. version, it’s worth checking out. Be forewarned, however, they can get away with a lot more on the BBC so swearing is plentiful.

Some people don’t like the British style of humor, but man, Ricky Gervais is hilarious on that show (he created the franchise, afterall).

by Drew Roberts on Feb 15, 2010 4:39 PM PST up reply actions

I've watched some of the original

I like Ricky Gervais a lot. That guy cracks me up all day long. Other than that, I don’t like the British version nearly as much. I guess it’s easier for me to identify and relate with the American version. Plus, I’m not gonna lie, the British accents drive me crazy after a while.
That’s why I refuse to watch movies with Hugh Grant in them…the accent man, it gets to me.

Anyway, I loved The Office in the beginning but lately they’ve gone away from what made the show successful in the first place. In my opinion anyway.

Agreed.

British version humor is a little dry.
U.S. version’s first 3 seasons were spectacular, but lately the show has faltered.

Obviously you're not a golfer...

Not bad! (just watched Bill & Ted's)

I had long been putting off Lost. This summer my girlfriend and I have started from the beginning (thanks Hulu!) and have been enjoying it thoroughly, and at our own pace. We just started Season 4, so I’m gonna have to step lightly here so I don’t ruin the show for myself.

The Office is classic.
30 Rock is just as good (sometimes better).
Some friends tipped me to Parks and Recreation. I watched the pilot and a couple randoms ones and was unconvinced, but I got a Hulu and watched a few and it has been pretty stinking funny lately too.

The one with Fred Armisen as the Venezuelan politician. That episode got me back into the show.

For those of you that haven't watched Lost

The best way I can describe it — it’s like an incredibly long movie. Since the writers aren’t constrained to 2-3 hour typical movie runtime, they can do incredible story lines and character development. Plus, it’s filmed in Hawaii so the thing actually looks like a movie instead of a sitcom shot in a studio.

For those of you that haven’t seen it yet, I envy you. Only because I wish I could watch it all again for the first time. Anytime I can convince someone to start watching it, I get genuinely excited for them and the journey they’re about to undertake.

I hope I haven’t oversold it. Watch the first 4 episodes of season 1 and if you aren’t hooked by then, you can at least say you tried it.

All that being said, my favorite TV show ever is still The Wire. Go figure.

by Nick Kroes on Feb 15, 2010 3:52 PM PST reply actions

This sounds a lot like Battlestar Galactica… except the movie got pretty stupid and dark towards the end. Glad to know this is the last season only because the writers will probably go out with a bang instead of lame ducks!

Spartacus: Blood and Sand

Have any of you guys been following S: B&S on Starz? On one hand, it’s hokey as hell, the acting sucks, and it’s nothing more than a soap opera on steroids. On the other hand, you’ve gotta love the extreme violence, gratuious sex, graphic nudity, and all the overstated gladiator stuff that’s a regular staple on the show. Damn, that Lucy Lawless looks fine! Unfortunately, I have one major problem with all this; my wife doesn’t allow me to watch it. I’ve gotta sneak in my viewing when she’s not home, or else be ready with the remote to switch to sportscenter if she happens to walk into the TV room. If she catches me, my ass is ending up on a platter. Any thoughts on how I can talk her into letting me watch this trashy but entertaining series? The show has absolutely no redeemng value, and it’s probably causing my IQ to plummet with every episode, but it’s my only vice! (Of course, my wife thinks my rabid loyalty to the Broncos is a vice.) Any suggestions on this would be appreciated!

Talk her into...

watching True Blood, on HBO, first. It has a storyline that is more for females, but there is still the gratuitous sex and some violence. The acting isn’t the greatest either, no real need for too many special effects, whereas S:B&S’s effects look TERRIBLE. It ruins the whole show for me. But, maybe if she can get into that, it could open a door for S: B&S? Just a thought..

Well this is off topic

But I’ve long been someone to make fun of Stuart Scott and his lazy eye, as Kevin does here. But, at least according to people who hang out at deadspin, he got cancer in his eye. And that makes it less funny. So instead can we make fun of him for vacuous catch-phrases and a lack of real analysis, rather than mocking him, for, like, being cancer-ridden?

Oh, and, um, I still like south park a lot; while I kinda hate lost (although this is mostly because I moved in with some good friends a few years ago; they loved lost and watched it every week, while I just got thrown in in the middle of it, and probably as a result thought it was dumb).

I would like to know what we (OBNUG Nation!) think the best show on tv is, the best place to eat, or everyone elses favorite other teams or whatever. Almost as much fun as watching The Office:

JIM: Question. What is the best kind of bear?
DWIGHT: That’s a ridiculous question.
JIM: False. Black Bear
DWIGHT: That’s debatable. There are basically two schools of thought—
JIM: Fact. Bears eat Beets. Bears. Beets. Battlestar Gallactica.

Anyway, I would love to see Joss Whedon write an episode of Psych. Could be the best marriage of comedy writers I’ve seen in awhile.

I loved Firefly, but could never get into the Buffy series.

Firefly and Nathan Fillion are the sole reason I watch Castle on ABC. Fox made a big blunder when they pulled Firefly after the first season.

Since I don’t have cable/dish, my TV viewing consists of Lost, Castle, MI-5 (which I like better than 24) and Everton Soccer on Tuesday nights from the English Premier League(Channel 39.3)

I did like Psych when it had a short run on NBC and I occassionally watch an episode online.

I have liked How I Met Your Mother the few times I have watched it, and it looks like I might have to check our Parks and Rec.

Lost

Amazing episode last night. I feel like the final season is starting to take shape.

I’m satisfied. Are you?

by Nick Kroes on Feb 17, 2010 7:45 AM PST reply actions

I really liked that they worked recurring characters into Lock’s flash sideways. I like that the characters are not living isolated lives apart from each other. It’s more interesting that way.

On an unrelated note, is anyone else a little bummed that Ben is not the villain that he was in the previous seasons? I feel that the bad guy torch has been passed to not-Locke, and I don’t like that. Ben was such a good evil person. I hope they work some of his evilness into upcoming episodes, like maybe selling everyone out at the temple or something.

"Islanders fan, huh? Team of the future, I'd say." - Roger Johnson

by Kevan Lee on Feb 17, 2010 8:30 AM PST up reply actions

Ben has always walked the fine line between villain and not villain. Michael Emerson has done an amazing job playing him in such a way that you are not sure whether to believe him or not. But that’s the way Lost has been all along. There’s an overarching theme between Good vs. Evil but we’re not sure who fits into what category. Are you sure not-Lock is bad? I can’t say for sure.

Another huge theme of Lost is redemption. How come Ben can’t have redemption? Right now his island self seems like a neutered version of his old self.

I know how this bothers you Kevan and how you like people to be in nice pretty boxes that you can easily identify but I love it.

by Nick Kroes on Feb 17, 2010 9:29 AM PST up reply actions

I agree it has been a little wierd seeing a different side of Ben...

I much prefer his character as the Villain.

I am not sure non-Locke is the villain in all this. There are too many obvious references to the traditional roles of white and black, that I wouldn’t be surprised if the writers flipped the roles of who is good and who is bad.

"...east and west is the problem, north and south the solution."

by MKingery on Feb 17, 2010 1:37 PM PST up reply actions

I'm satisfied.

I thought it was a good episode. They started to answer or answered, not sure yet, one of the biggest questions. Why they are there! And some people thought we wouldn’t see the numbers again… I suppose it’s safe to assume that no one will stay behind and take Jacobs place… or do we? I can’t really explain what I’m thinking, I tried and it didn’t make any sense. But I guess like, anything that has happened throughout all the seasons, mean nothing in the “sideways” flashes. Which could mean, maybe, that Locke, Hugo, Sawyer, Sayid, Jack, or one of the Kwons could stay behind and take over Jacobs place? Well, I guess Locke can’t because his name got crossed off. So maybe Jack stays behind? and that’s why he had the cut on his neck on the plane? Anyone following? Ill just stop.

Overall though, I thought it was a good episode. Locke finally accepting that he is in a wheelchair was nice. I got sort of annoyed with his, “don’t tell me what I can’t do” attitude…

Winter of "LOST"

Before this winter I had seen maybe one episode of LOST. But in december I found season 1&2 on craigslist for $10 so I gave it a try, shortly thereafter I bought 3&4 and eventually 5. I finished season 5 right before this season started. So I put some serious time in this winter getting caught up on LOST (dedication). it sucks having to wait week to week for season 6.

BAZINGA!!!

Okay, I have been waiting for Lost for quite some time, but with that said, the nerd in me can’t wait for the Big Bang Theory. BAZINGA!!!

Note my favorite show recently ended. BattleStar Galactica pretty much kicked everyone’s BAD WORD. I thought Joss Whedon’s Dollhouse would fill in, but Fox kicked it off the air in favor of well I have no idea.

Then there is Flash Forward. This show has the potential of becoming the next lost. The sleeper in this should be Burn Notice. A unique plot and well there are “parts” of the show that are very appealing to men everywhere.

Oh to answer the question, I watched the first 2 seasons of Lost during the summer, got hooked and have never missed an episode and I am completely glued to the BAD WORD thing.

Big Bang Theory always makes me laugh.

Monday Nights

I plan my life around Monday night. I love Big Bang Theory, HIMYM, and 2 and a half men. The can never seem to fill the 730 slot with anything good. I really liked rules of engagment but it seems to come and go. Then there is Men of a Certain age which wraped up last night. Love that show. Burn Notice has been good since it statred. White collar is very good. The Mentalist, House, so many good shows. Re-runs of any law and order.

Also a big fan of 24

With that being said if Jack Bauer were on the Lost Island. In 24 Hours not only would he been off the island, he would have taken out the Black Puff of smoke. Blew the Hatch door open in Hour 1. Gotten all the information from Sawyer in a matter of moments. Would have interrogated Jacob with a new form of Toucher and found out everything. Used the Radio tower to contact CTU to plot a assault on the Temple. I could go on for hours but we only have 24.

Also if everyone would listen to Jack and do what he said the first time, the show would be call 12.

Not a fan of LOST. I find myself getting... lost.

The Office is a favorite though. Always sunny is also great. Other than that, TV is a vehicle for sports for me. Golf, tennis, NBA (Laker fan), NFL, MLB, X-Games, MMA, freestyle MX, Poker, underwater basket weaving, I watch it all. If it’s competitive, and requires physical exertion or a mental edge, I watch it.

I’m a movie buff. Except I rarely visit a theater. I’m all about Redbox or Netflix. I’d rather drink a frothy beverage in my recliner while I watch The Hangover in HD and Dolby Digital without the gangly tweeners behind me, popping each others zits. Call me old fashioned, or lazy, or frugal, whatever.

I’m excited about the Marty Tangent. Be sure a Mikrino Poll is sure to make an appearance in the coming weeks. Stay tuned…

hahahahaha..

That’s awesome. I get crap for it all the time. I love ‘reality’ tv. American idol if you follow from begining to end its great. The bachelor is way addicting. Way addicting.

Side note. I’m in the boise airport and u of I has sooo much ads here. And the free internet goes through some u of I sponsored site. Its really weird. Anyone else notice this?

HAHA!

I totally didn’t know if you are male or female. I just thought I might get Nick feeling in a very odd place. I totally expected you to come on and say, “Um… yeah, I am a girl.” Just the few seconds of Nick being uncomfortable is awesome. But this is even better.

If it makes you feel any better, I still cry when I watch Shadowlands.

Thanks guys. But I can see how the show would be addicting. That’s why I try to stay far away from it.

The Bachelor

I always catch up on the Bachelor by watching The Soup. Jole is very good at keeping me updated.

One of the few things I wish I had done differently...

When the first season of Lost came out on dvd, I had a chance to get a copy signed by the producers (and I believe the director). Since I wasn’t a fan (and couldn’t get up to Burbank/Glendale), I didn’t. Could have made a killing on Ebay.

I love the colors Orange and Blue. Go Broncos!!! Go Titans!!! BAD WORD Gators!!!

Chuck is the best show on TV right now. Period.

"Well, we'll just have to get to know each other a little better then. I like Ferris wheels, college football, and anything that goes more than 200 miles an hour."

I prefer "Heroes"

But the one-two punch of that show and Chuck, I think, make Mondays the best night on TV.

I need to get back into that. Good to hear it’s appreciated though

Not fair...

…making me choose between Lost and The Office…grrr…I’m also a HUGE Fringe fan, by the way.

Wasn't it Boise State's first game of the year, too???

I'm eagerly waiting for the next few episodes in the mail via Netflix

And they couldn’t get here soon enough! I was told a few years ago from a friend to watch this show. Never got around to it till the other day.
I can already tell I’m going to be straight addicted.
