Who is Bryan Harsin?

Okay, try to get past the annoying title.  Full disclosure, I am a Texas Longhorn student and fan.  On December 6, the school formally cut ties with much-maligned offensive coordinator Greg Davis after a 5-7 embarrassment.  The rumor mill has been swirling regarding his replacement at OC.  Among a handful of names, Bryan Harsin appears to be at or near the top of the wishlist.  And by this I do not refer to some stupid fans' wishlist, I mean the guys that make the power moves and donate the money.  To make this brief I'm on a fact finding mission to satisfy my own curiosity.

Star-divide

My general questions, if you are willing to help me out:

[1]I admit I know nothing about the guy.  His position is OC but how much control does he have over the offense?  Is Peterson the man pulling all the strings on game day, or does he truly delegate the play-calling to Harsin?

[2]What is the fans' general sentiment toward Harsin (unnoticed, overachiever, mediocre?)

[3]What is his style of offense (pro-style, pass-spread, run-spread, multiple formations?)

[4]What is the most annoying thing you see on offense at Boise St? (an oft-called play, some annoying tendency?)

[5]What is your favorite thing about the Broncos' offense?

No I don't expect you to answer all these questions, but I'm eager for any answers.

Disclaimer:  I have absolutely no intention of "trolling".  These are honest questions and I've been following multiple sources that make claims about Bryan Harsin:

In addition, the Texas staff visited Boise State for offensive advice during the summer of 2010 so there is a prior relationship to some degree.

Take what I say with whatever confidence you wish.  I truly believe Bryan Harsin is a target but nothing is official.

I come in peace, I know it's easy to attack the foreigner but bear with me!

Have you ever watched Boise State?

No intent to “troll” back, but your questions either indicate you have never watched Boise State play or that you have withheld your opinions looking for answers from a fanbase that knows the ins and outs of the offense.

Just about everything you need to know is wrapped up in this amazing post on SmartFootball.

Petersen is largely the mastermind of the creative offense, but Harsin has been fully in control of the reigns during the five years he has been OC. He calls the plays during the games and has shown to be a masterful game day coordinator.

There is no annoying aspect of the offense. It is aggressive, balanced, creative and explosive – yet does not lend itself to many turnovers. It is rarely repetitive and plays that are repeated are done so because they have consistently effective.

If Harsin were to go to Texas and install this offense, Texas would need an extremely accurate and smart quarterback. Applewhite and McCoy would probably excel in this offense. Simms and Gilbert may not be as effective – arm strength is not as important as decision making and timing.

Some of Harsin’s success has been that he is surrounded with an offensive genius as a head coach and an amazing staff of position coaches, but he has proven he is an asset that can take charge and lead an offense.

I have seen a few Boise St games (Fiesta Bowl, VT this year, Nevada, the occasional WAC game). Still, i wanted to keep an open mind and get the facts from the people who know the Broncos the best.

Thanks for the info.

As for the annoying tendency’s, I only ask because our previous coordinator had a few things that showed up every game like this god-awful quick pass to the sideline that would get blown up for no gain or for a loss 9 times out of 10. And he had an annoying habit of calling 60 pass plays against teams that could not stop the run. So anyway…

Well ...

… there is the option to the short side of the field. But I think Harsin’s over that one now.

As someone who takes offense very seriously when watching football

Harsin, NOT only has been in the reigns for how he calls plays, but also with WHO he calls plays.

Like Kingery mentioned above, the qb needs to be intellegent with decision making.

But look at BSU’s RB’s POWER and speed. Harsin will not call a power play with Avery, he’d be crushed…etc

Tendencies on WR, he saves better recievers closer to EZ while better speed when deep in your own territory, choosing to go for chance than sure thing when deep.

annoying

How about anytime BSU runs a QB option when the other team knows there is maybe 1% chance Moore keeps it?

That’s about it though.

To actually answer your question...

Harsin is a Boise State lifer. He graduated from Capital High School and served 4 years as a backup quarterback in the late 90’s. Since then, he served as an offensive grad assistant and QB coach before being promoted to OC under coach Petersen. I would say that our current offensive is a result of their collaboration rather than the work of either one of them.

I have my doubts as to whether Harsin would be the same coach under a guy like Mack Brown, much like I have doubts that a Boise lifer like Harsin would leave what he has knowing full well that he be the unofficial coach-in-waiting at BSU

most annoying thing to me is the camera man who completely bites on the play fake EVERYTIME.

Why do they decide zooming in on the RB (who doesn’t have the ball mind you) is a good idea, meanwhile the actual play is taking place off camera?

Harsin is being molded by Petersen in my opinion. He most definitely has control over the play selection, and is a great game manager, but I think the ballsy-ness of years past has dropped off a bit. Not much, but think back when Pete was the OC and the first year or two as HC. Much more willing to go for it on 4th, and the wide open plays with multiple motions and shifts were happening on almost every play. Anyone else noticed a drop off there? Harsin is great. And he does a great job. Just mentioning something I noticed. Not even sure if its true or not, just my perception.

Championships should be earned on the field, not in newspapers or computers.

Risk Taking

I think the risk taker of the bunch was more Dan Hawkins than either Petersen or Harsin. With continued success I also wonder if there isn’t a growing reluctance to take chances.

Why they couldn't/wouldn't use some tricky stuff a couple weeks ago baffles me.

Might have turned the tide as in games past.

One Huge Proof of Greatness

Harsin and the Broncos staff have a great ability to adapt to the strengths of the players. I think you have to be adaptable in this game because you are turning over players every year. How difficult is it to continually dominate a conference (ANY CONFERENCE) when you have to replace personnel so frequently. Obviously recruiting brilliance is important; but also coaching your players and making sure they improve. Kellen Moore has improved every year IMO. Harsin helped him be more fluid and shifty in the pocket after his freshman year, Harsin helped him become a better deep passer after his sophomore year, what will he become after his junior year? A running threat? Okay let’s be real- I think we will see a great Kellen next year because he won’t have the weapons like Pettis and Young. Kellen will control the offense; read defenses better, and move players to create an advantage on offense. Kellen will be like the “little Tom Brady” of college football— Just win games without a diva WR.

Harsin and the Bronco staff are great at being adaptable to their system with their talent. Look how much Texas and Florida suffered without their QBs who ran their system well. Where was the adaptation to your system Brown and Meyer?

In two years we will see a Bronco offense (assuming Petersen is around) that adjusts to the strengths of Hedrick (most likely) and we run a little more and our QB uses his feet to create time for receivers and scrambles for yards and uses quick precision timing.

With Harsin at Texas and all the access to that talent he could create a machine that would be a nightmare to defend. I hope he never leaves— I hope Harsin hates humidity, cockroaches, burnt orange, and BBQ.

Hey

I like Austin a lot. Great music; generally a pretty area for Texas. But it’s still just another liberal college city and the humidity makes your brain hurt.

Not to diminish Harsin's role...but....

I recently spoke to a past BSU offensive coach and he claimed that Petersen micromanages everything…especially on offense. Part of Pete’s success has been his hands on leadership. Harsin has been groomed by Petersen, as he worked his way up from grad assistant to tight end coach to our current OC. If Harsin left, BSU would not be affected…much in the same way that Wilcox’s depature had no affect on our defense. Bottom line Petersen runs the show…and always has…even Dan Hawkins was more of a figure Pete’s brillance.

by csf68 on Dec 7, 2010 10:05 AM PST reply actions

You can have Harsin...

just not this year.

You need to wait until after next season when Kellen graduates, so he can take over as OC after Harsin leaves.

Just kidding, of course. Sort of. :)
