Petersen says MWC will be better than the WAC. Do you believe him? (Poll)

Is the future brighter than the past? I have been wondering if the future MWC really is better than WAC that we Bronco fans have been so used to after Coach Petersen said it will be even without TCU in the mix. I want to think that the MWC will be much better than the WAC was. Join me after the jump for some numerical evidence to hopefully make me (and you) feel better about the move being a vertical jump rather than a lateral sidestep.

I looked at three areas for comparison: Win-Loss Records over the last 5 years, 2010 Attendance Figures, and 2008-09 Athletic Budgets. The future MWC has major advantages in Attendance and Funding, but is virtually tied when it comes to W-L records on the football field. I used only the 9 teams in each league: the 9 that are in the current WAC today, and the 9 that we know will be in the MWC beginning for the 2012 football season.

I also looked at figures including Hawaii in the 2012 MWC. Adding Hawaii to the MWC makes a positive impact in all three categories. There are two ways to look at these results: 1. the WAC teams are doing just as well as the MWC teams with less support, or 2. the support for MWC teams instills higher standards and increases the potential for success for each program.

There are other factors that could be considered as well. Market size, academic achievements, basketball success, school size, other NCAA sports and their attendance figures, etc are all factors. I didn't go into that much depth, but I have a feeling the MWC has an advantage in many of those areas as well. Let me know what you think of the figures I've listed and your knowledge of other factors.

Win-Loss Records:

The current WAC teams have a combined record of 277-283 (.495) over the last 5 years. The 2012 MWC teams have a combined record of 274-283 (.492) over the last 5 years. This is a virtual tie. However, I am surprised that the WAC has only played 3 more games than the MWC considering each team gets to play an extra game every other year because of the trip to Hawaii and Hawaii gets an extra game every year. I have a couple of theories (though I did not investigate this completely): 1. the MWC teams might have played in more bowl games than the WAC teams or 2. many of the MWC teams have completed the 2010 season while many of the WAC teams still have 1 regular season game remaining. The former is wishful thinking and the later is probably more realistic. I also added up each team's best W-L record over the last 5 seasons. The leagues are identical at 79-36 (.687). I added Hawaii to the 2012 MWC and the numbers increased drastically (.512 5-year winning%) and 91-37 (.711)

Attendance:

The WAC average for the 2010 season is 22,758. Hawaii draws the most at 35,580 and Idaho draws the least at 13,674. The 2012 MWC's 2010 attendance average is 28,217. Air Force draws the most at 42,650 fans per game and Nevada draws the least at 19,433 and is the only team averaging less than 20,000 fans per game. Nevada is in the middle of the pack in the 2010 WAC at 5th place in attendance figures. Adding Hawaii to the MWC totals brings the average attendance up to 28,953.

Athletics Budgets:

I was only able to find 2008-09 budgets. The WAC average was $20.8 million per school. The MWC average was $27.4 million per school. Hawaii had the largest WAC budget at $30.6 million and Louisiana Tech had the smallest at $13.9 million. For the MWC, San Diego State had the largest budget at $34.5 million and Boise State had the smallest at $20.5 million. Like Nevada's attendance, BSU was 5th in WAC budgets and last in the MWC.
