I probably should risk everything and put all I have on an Oregon win. It’s a lock.
  • Uncle Boise gets the ladies involved in the predictions. Two of three pick the Ducks to win.

First!

Broncos 27, Ducks 24

I expect the game to be close. I expect both teams to come out with some first-game jitters. I expect the difference to be special teams.

As an Oregon fan

This is the game I am most concerned about all season. I am confident the Ducks will pull through to avenge last season. Its going to be an offensive showdown.

Bing Neutron says:

The D will bend but not break and Kellen Moore will find the right places to put the ball. There will be a running game. I’m thinking it will start out a lot like the ’06 Oregon State game. Ducks start off strong then the D steps up and shuts them down just in time for the offense to take off. The Crowd will be INSANE!

Well I was off by just a little bit

Aside from the score though, I was right on the money. Even Graham Watson agrees:

I asked: “Hey Graham, how ’bout this crowd.”

It’s a great crowd. I love the color coordination and it’s loud, which I think is giving the Ducks some problems.
This is my second time. My first was Fresno State. Couldn’t open the windows to the press box then, so this is much better…And this is a much more entertaining game.

Hey!

I did a similar post way back in May. I suppose its time for a new one though considering the game is tomorrow.

I’ll stick with my original prediction 38-21.

Masoli still can’t really throw the ball because of our secondary, his shortness and new receivers. And he can’t run because he’s on lock down by at least one man on the D, like Kaepernick was last year. Blounts tubby-butt gets winded, so he can only run 1 of every 4 plays and doesn’t do much, maybe one sweet hurtle or something like last year, but thats it. BSU’s running is improved with maybe a touchdown or two in the red zone, but It’ll be Kellen’s golden arm that wins the day against an overhyped Oregon D.

 LET THE GAMES BEGIN!!!

Bronco fans are diluting themselves

The idea that the Ducks are going to get blown out by the Broncos is laughable.

They appear to be fairly evenly matched teams including all of their players on offense

and defense—yes, Moore and Masoli too—who are candidates for major college

player awards.

That said, the game will be high scoring with bad defense on both sides and it

will be decided in the final two minutes by one score.

I say the Ducks take this one, 41-38

The score

will be BSU 45 Oregon 42 in OT.
J. Johnson will tackle Massoli at the 1 yard line on 3rd and goal and the Broncos will block the tying field goal attempt… and yes, I will rush the field.

Broncos 38, Ducks 33

Eerily similar to last year’s game as the Broncos have to hold off the Ducks in the 4th. They’re gonna try to run, run, run…with marginal success and Masoli will have to take to the air late. This means picks.

by Drew Roberts on Sep 2, 2009 12:38 PM PDT reply actions

Wait a second

They are gonna run run run with marginal success? What is your analysis behind this? Sure we have questions on the O-Line, but Blount vs. your depth-lacking D-line and small linebackers should make for a lot of running right up the middle of your D. Just wait until the 4th when Blount keeps going and dragging your LBs with him.

Don’t you mean, “Wait until the 4th when Blount is sucking air so hard that the flags on the goal posts will be waiving because of all that weight that he gained in the off season.” And I hear it wasn’t the “good” kind of weight either.

Broncos 45 - Ducks 20

The 12th man should represent well tomorrow.
I believe the Broncos will more than cover the spread. My paycheck says different. I have faith in Kellen Moore and his stable of receivers. I believe the running game and O line will show the improvement we’re all hoping for.

Where I believe the difference in the game will lie is in the Defense and Special Teams. I’m predicting both to be off the charts tomorrow. I think this defensive unit will be forcing turnovers routinely. Special Teams is always stellar for Boise State, and I see no change on the horizon.

Coach Pete is sure to have gameplanned this to death. And its appears that Chip Kelly has some sort of handle on it too. I think Boise State has the edge here though.

And last, if I happen to be wrong, I will be here to hear from all you Duck fans. Just as I have promised. But expect me to make excuse after excuse until the next time our teams meet.

K Moore and the Broncos will own the Ducks’ defense. I predict at least 3 TDs for Moore and a TD a piece for Avery and Harper on the ground. The O-Line will step up and give Kellen the time he needs in the pocket. The Bronco D will punish the pass and make Oregon a one dimensional team again. Also, Brotzman will be good for a FG.

Harper isn’t playing anymore. The game won’t look ANYTHING like it did last year.

Oregon State said all they can do is run.
Oklahoma State said all they can do is run.

865 Passing Yards and 6 TD passes later…

I mean, RAM meals are at stake here. Don’t let your homerism crowd your judgment from free food.

I’m not saying BSU can’t or won’t win. Just don’t base your entire judgment off of one game.

Boise State 34, Oregon 16

Boise State defense bends all night but doesn’t break, holding Oregon to three first half field goals. In the fourth, after Boise State makes it’s final score to go up 34-9, Oregon’s LaBlount rips off a long run to the endzone to give the Duck fans some fleeting hope.

Ducks have averaged 48 points a game when Chip Kelly has more than the standard one week of preparation. Oh, and 54 points when the opponent is bowl-caliber and the Ducks are not playing in Eugene.

Ducks 45-31.

Last time I checked, there is no "Hall of Average." - Oregon Football Coach Chip Kelly

by JConant on Sep 2, 2009 4:21 PM PDT up reply actions

Let's recap...

What was the score in Eugene last year heading into the 4th Quarter? 34-13? Yeah, that’s what I thought. And that was against the third youngest team in the country. Now you’re on The Blue, and unless Thomas comes in for Masoli and goes all pass happy, expect to walk out of Boise with a your tail between your legs.

by cexeko on Sep 2, 2009 9:05 PM PDT up reply actions

1. The Blue is small and pathetic. We handed Michigan its worse loss they’ve had in their stadium, and it holds 70% more fans that are ten times as rabid as BSU fans. Bronco stadium has minimal influence to the outcome of the game. I’ve asked what makes it so hard to win at Bronco Stadium. I’ve yet to hear an answer that doesn’t reflect the fact of how bad the WAC is. The players and the coaches are going to be the biggest difference.

2. Different game. Different team. Again, any one that expects the same exact performance out of the ducks this year has some serious problems. Any one that underestimate Masoli’s arm has no clue what Masoli can do. Ref: Arizona, Oregon State, Oklahoma State.

Sensitive much?

Brilliant! A reference to last year’s third quarter score does a lot to debunk the facts of Oregon’s offensive output under Chip Kelly the past two years.

Refer to JShufelt’s post above about the teams last season, a couple with defenses arguably better the BSU’s, who thought Masoli is one dimensional. That’s 865 passing yards and 6 TDs over three games. I suppose you’ll tell me that Arizona (ranked no. 23 in pass defense) and Oregon State (no. 22) weren’t as tough as BSU (no. 34), but, of course, the facts clearly suggest otherwise.

Last time I checked, there is no "Hall of Average." - Oregon Football Coach Chip Kelly

by JConant on Sep 2, 2009 9:59 PM PDT up reply actions

No...

You’re the sensitive one. You are trying to tell me last year doesn’t matter by bringing up stats from last year to prove your point. Make sense? No. Believe me, Boise State is a different dog on the Blue, and tomorrow night you’ll see why.

by cexeko on Sep 2, 2009 10:18 PM PDT up reply actions

Cexeko

he is bringing up stats regarding Masoli whom you didn’t face but for half a quarter. Chris Harper played the featured quarterback in exactly 1 game last year. He then became a wide receiver.

You are a different animal on the blue:

Bowling Green – 20 points (allowed 23.2)
La Tech – 38 points (allowed 23.7)
Hawaii – 27 points (allowed 28.9 points)
USU – 49 points (allowed 34.7)
Fresno State – 61 points (allowed 31.1 points)

So, you averaged 39 points on teams that gave up an average 28. Btw, those teams you played really suck. USU was as bad a team as I’ve seen roll into Autzen – like Big Sky bad. Seriously, our guys 7 deep were getting double digit snaps. Does awful even begin to describe the competition you’ve played.

Beating Oregon State at home early in the season (2004 they started 1-4 and 2006 they started to 2-4) is nothing to write home about. They are notoriously bad to start the season. Hell, Oregon State starting the season 2-3 or 1-4 is guaranteed.

You have a home field advantage no doubt…but your record, in large part, is because you’re better than the teams you face by a wide margin. It’s not because you grow fangs on the blue turf.

by BisonDucks on Sep 3, 2009 2:58 AM PDT up reply actions

Yup...

Not bad for a team that was third youngest in the country. They beat Oregon in Autzen. Also, I noticed you didn’t post how many points those opponents scored in the Blue last year. I think it was a 6.8 average. Its going to be a long night for Oregon.

by cexeko on Sep 3, 2009 5:59 AM PDT via mobile up reply actions

a couple with defenses arguably better the BSU’s,

WTH? Serious? Better? Excuse me… * turns back and laughs while rolling eyes *

Arizona, OSU, and OK State? You reference passing stats? Oh…My…God

The true measure of defensive strength is how many points they give up. (Scoring D)

In case you didn’t click that link, Boise State finished 3rd in Scoring Defense in 2008 (USC, TCU)

The true measure of a defense against the pass is pass efficiency defense.

"First thing to grasp is how the pass “efficiency” defense is different from just pass defense. Pass defense is based solely on a team’s yardage totals. The pass defense ranking is figured for how many yards per game are allowed through opponents’ passing efforts. Pass efficiency defense takes not only their yardage, but pass completion percentages, both INT total and percentage of INTs thrown, TD total and rate, yards per attempt and yards per completion into account to then give an overall rating. Just like yardage, the lower your opponent’s pass efficiency number, the better you are doing. But unlike stopping just yardage, if the other guy is mistake-free and can score via aerial assault, you are likely going to lose. Really, you can survive a 50-yard pass play that only gets them to your 35, but there is no “recovery room” from an 11-yard scoring strike set up by 12 good runs. It is good when your opponents are less efficient, even if they get a few extra yards."

Boise State ranked 2nd in Pass Efficiency Defense in 2008. (USC)

Thanks for walking into that one though. I feel good now…

What does that even tell you though? Likely it tells you both QBs will be as likely to throw interceptions.

I mean, anything can happen, but in all likelihood, interceptions won’t make a huge difference in the game.

That's my point

Stats don’t tell you much because they can be manipulated to whatever story you want to hear. It’s all about who wins and stats will be there at the end of the game for reasons and excuses when all is said and done.

by PeaDiddy on Sep 3, 2009 7:03 AM PDT up reply actions

Come on man. If we’re talking about what will happen at the game, what has happened in previous games (i.e. stats) indicate that in all likelihood, interceptions will not be the difference in the game.

If you want to get all “it’s only about who wins”, why the hell did you even reply to my comment?

Stats

You listed a stat that favored Masoli, so I listed a similar stat that favored Moore. I didn’t think it was that difficult to figure out why I replied. Stats are always up for interpretation. So, what I am saying is maybe interception will play a big roll in tonight’s game, maybe they won’t. Only time will tell, and since you used your stat to come to the conclusion “I’m actually quite surprised that all BSU fans are specifically saying that interceptions will benefit their team, considering that Masoli had a lower INT rate that Kellen Moore last year….” Maybe these fans were basing their prediction on other stats. Do you get it now? Or should I go on………

by PeaDiddy on Sep 3, 2009 8:53 AM PDT up reply actions

You do realize that both stats had marginal difference at best? And that what all the stats point to, is not having interceptions make a big deal?

Based on previous stats, both QBs are roughly as likely to throw interceptions. Now, INTs could make a big difference in the game, but there is little reason to think that it well. And it’s not born out in any stats, specifically the ones that you used.

by jtlight on Sep 3, 2009 9:04 AM PDT up reply actions

I don’t totally disagree, but turnovers can and do play a major part in a lot of football games and to say that their is little reason to believe that INTs will make a difference is a point of view I can’t support. Yes, based on the stats there is not a statistical difference in how often the two QBs throw an INT. However, that doesn’t take into account the field position at the time, if the team who threw the INT was in scoring range or if the INTs resulted in points for the other team or not. I think there is just as good of a chance that they will or wont make a difference in tonight’s game.

by PeaDiddy on Sep 3, 2009 9:29 AM PDT up reply actions

I would would agree, but my counter is that there’s an equal chance that they could affect Oregon or BSU. So, if you assume that interceptions will make a difference in the game, it could go either way.

On the 8th day...

God created Kellen Moore.
And it was his destiny to pick apart the Oregon defense and leave them looking ridiculous……

Our defense shows up even BETTER than expected, but Oregon gets lucky a few times. Kellen Moore shows us why there is no need to worry about a sophmore slump. DJ Harper has a breakout game, and Jeremy Avery doesn’t do to bad either.

Well, I have to stick with my original prediction of 76 total points scored (it wouldn’t make very much sense to have two different scores on two different blogs). I predict Wilson to score at least one touchdown (and don’t be suprised if it’s on offense), Avery and Harper combining for 150 yards (that’s all they will need), and Moore to have a minimum of 300 yards. Split up the touchdowns amongst the team as you please — this is gonna be fun.

Graham Watson

Graham Watson wants to go to the Ram

No. 14 Boise State 28, No. 16 Oregon 17: Oregon’s man defense struggled last year; expect more of the same in the opener against Boise State quarterback Kellen Moore. Moore picked the secondary apart last year and with Austin Pettis and Titus Young, he’ll do it again. The Ducks are motivated to win this game, but I’m not sure they’ll be able to conquer the magic of the blue turf.
