WAC media weigh in on preseason picks; will Boise State be unanimous number one?

Photo

WAC media arrive at the Salt Lake City Anniversary Inn Airport Hilton today to begin a three-day WAC Football Preview with the biggest news sure to be news we all already know: Boise State is going to be the preseason favorite. The only drama is if they'll be a unanimous choice.

To find out, I've compiled the available WAC preseason polls from the members of the media who know how to blog (not as many as you might think), and as far as I can tell, no one is picking against the Broncos. Of course, I have yet to see Mike Prater's poll.

After the jump, check out the media picks that have hit the web thus far, and add your own WAC predictions in the comments. (Please, no picking Fresno No. 1.)

Star-divide

(Note: This list will be updated as more WAC picks become available. If I missed one, please send it my way.)

(Note #2: My favorite media pick thus far is Troy Oppie's choice of Utah State as the number two team in the conference. His reasoning: "I'm Keith Hernandez!")

Utah State was picked #2 by somebody? Was that just a ridiculous pick to show how stupid preseason polls are? (Like Steve Spurrier always voting Duke #25 in the first coach’s poll.)

My Picks...

1. Boise State
9. – tie – Nevada, Fresno State, Utah State, Hawaii, New Mexico State, Idaho, La Tech.

OPOY: Kellen Moore. Why? Because it’s obvious
DPOY: Kellen Moore. Why? Because he’s that good.

Thanks for Ferd’s. I hadn’t seen that one yet. I’m proud of him for not having Hawaii any higher than fourth.

I'm With Dave and Brian

My preseason guess would be the same as Southorn’s and Murphy’s. This is college football, so you can be sure it won’t turn out this way. Nothing is predictable.
It’s great to see some WAC teams ( LaTech, Utah St,, Nevada ) actually improving.

What's with all the BPOY nominee's?

If you make it in a Playboy magazine, you should be unanimous. I mean, I can understand Kapi in the OPOY, only because some of the media couldn’t see past stick-man’s head. But Kyle Wilson should be near unanimous, with honorable mention to Ihenacho, and no one else even close.

Good point, Loque. I think too many people buy into the idea that CBs are too hard to quantify. Well, I buy into the idea that whoever is voted preseason DPOY is the same guy the media picks at the end of the year because they don’t understand football as well as they should. (See: Elimimian, Solomon, last year.)

WAC media: Choose Kyle Wilson for preseason DPOY. Don’t bother paying attention to what happens during the season. Choose Kyle Wilson for DPOY at the end of the year. You can’t go wrong.

Hmm

Wait, what is the obnug-community’s thinking on this? Mine:

BSU
Nevada
La Tech
Fresno
Hawaii
San Jose
Utah State
Idaho
New Mexico State

But what does everyone else around here think?

err

OP: that rangy Nevada QB
DP: Our awesome 1st round draft pick cornerback.

by killtacular on Jul 29, 2009 12:37 AM PDT up reply actions

I’d put La Tech #2 and Nevada #3. I think Nevada’s defense is going to bite them once or twice.

And for the bottom three, it’s a pick ‘em, as far as I’m concerned. Utah State-Idaho-NMSU is probably about right.

by Egnowit on Jul 29, 2009 1:45 AM PDT up reply actions

I think you pretty much summed up the consensus

Some might have Utah State higher, but Boise State – Nevada – LaTech – Fresno State seem to be the top four teams in everyone’s mind.

My Poll

1. Broncos

2.La. Tech
3. Nevada
4. Fresno
5. San Jose State
6. Hawaii
7. New Mexico State
8. Utah State
9. Idaho

I think Boise State is, and still will be, head and shoulders above the rest. La. Tech gets second by virtue of Frenso and Nevada’s inconsistencies. San Jose has a lock down on 5th. 6, 7, and 8 are inter-changeable. I do believe Utah State could get to 6th place at 5-7. And Hawaii easily slips to 8th in a couple toss up games.

Nevada. One reason I wouldn’t pick them #1, even if I wasn’t a Boise State fan.

DEFENSE. The say it wins championships, even WAC versions. And Nevada doesn’t have one.

100th in scoring defense giving up 32.3 ppg
120th….yes…dead last in Passing Defense with a “leaks like a sieve” 311 ypg
Even being ranked 6th in Rushing Defense allowing 88 ypg on the ground, isn’t enough to raise the Total Defense any higher than 92nd. Allowing a total of over 400 yards per game. To put it plainly, they stink defensively overall. And that’s good for a loss or two in the score happy WAC. Sorry Wolf pack fans.

Its funny to me...

It seems to me that the reason the rushing defense’s numbers are so good is because the passing defense is so bad. Why ever run the ball when you can pass at will. That will sure boost your rush defense’s ratings! And impress certain ESPN talking heads and their interns too.

by OBNUG Intern on Jul 29, 2009 4:17 PM PDT up reply actions

I made that observation last year

on an ESPN message board.

The run defense might be decent, but its helped considerably by the fact that even Taylor Bennett could put up video game numbers.

The problem is, unless they improve on Pass D and Scoring D, they pick up a loss no question. With Boise State in your conference, one loss is called 2nd place.
