The atomic clock actually says that we have just 91 days until the Ducks hit the blue turf (hard).
So, today we'll continue our countdown by briefly highlighting the Bronco player with the jersey number that corresponds with the number of days remaining till the opener. Sorry there isn't a more clear and concise way to explain that.
And we're off...
#91 Chuck Hayes, DT/OG/Who knows?
I've always liked the name 'Chuck'. It just seems like by adding 'chuck' to things you make them better...Chuck Norris, Chuckroast, Chuckwagon, Nunchuck, Chuck E. Cheese... It is for this reason that I was so stoked that Chuck Hayes was added to the Boise State team in the 2007 recruiting class (a totally not bad class overall).
Hayes spurned many a Mountain West also-ran to come join the Broncos...turning down Colorado State, Wyoming, and San Diego State's advances whilst playing prep ball at Eaglecrest High in Aurora, Colorado. As a senior, Hayes earned first team All-Conference, All-State, and All-Colorado (redundant?) honors as well as the "Heart of a Champion" award (likely handed out by Tony the Tiger himself). Hayes played in 5 games at DT last year for the Broncos as a redshirt freshman and notched 6 tackles and half a sack. The 6'2" Hayes will likely play a much larger role this year as the Broncos return few starters but a lot of game experience to the D and O-lines. Hayes kept a relatively low-profile on the D-line depth chart amongst the raucous hype surrounding Mike Atkinson and the deafening praise for the play of Winn, Hout, Winterswyk, Root and McLellin...so much so that he may move to Offensive Guard full-time after trying it out this Spring. My gut tells me that Chuck won't be "low-profile" for long...having the "Heart of a Champion" doesn't allow it.
