OBNUG Pick 'Em Contest - Week 10

Pickembajafresh_medium

Week 10 is here. I'm still trying to get myself together after my 1,500 word rant on the Boise State vs Oregon debate. I thought it would make me feel better. I guess the jury's still out on that.

But, back to the lighthearted part of our week here at OBNUG, the weekly pick 'em contest! After my disastrous 2-6 showing last week, I'm looking to turn things around. Join me after the jump for this week's games. And, as always, if you're new to this and need some guidance, check out the rules.

Let's get our free Baja Fresh on!

Note: Due to Boise State playing on Friday night, deadline for this week's picks will be 6:00 PM MT on Friday.

Star-divide

This Week's Games

Terrible slate of games this week. Have fun.

  • #9 LSU at #3 Alabama (-7.5)
  • #6 TCU (-24) at San Diego State
  • #8 Oregon (-7) at Stanford
  • #16 Ohio State at #11 Penn State (-4)
  • Utah State (-2) at Hawaii
  • Fresno State (-7.5) at Idaho
  • Nevada (-12.5) at San Jose State
  • #7 Boise State (-21) at Louisiana Tech
  • Tiebreaker: Total points in Boise State vs Louisiana Tech game

Nick's Picks

  • Alabama - This game could throw a huge wrench in the BCS if LSU wins. I hope that doesn't happen. I can't deal with more Oregon NC talk
  • TCU - San Diego State lost to Idaho. Can't forget that yet.
  • Oregon - I'm betting they roll until the Civil War game. Then it's "Go Beavers!" in my book.
  • Penn State - I feel like I'm picking with my heart instead of my head this week, but Penn State did look good against Michigan. Well, so did Illinois. I'm going to stop talking now.
  • Hawaii - Utah State favored on the road in Hawaii. I know Hawaii is on their 10th QB or something, but that just doesn't seem right.
  • Fresno State - Solid football team.
  • Nevada - Should run all over San Jose's defense.
  • Boise State - Got to believe that chip on their shoulder is just getting bigger each week.
Last Week: 2-6
Overall: 32-44-1

I'm slipping in the standings... dang

    * LSU (7.5) I really dislike ’Bama and think they might be overrated
    * TCU (-24) TCU is just unstopable
    * Oregon (-7) Might be a let down, but I don’t think so.
    * Penn State (-4) why do I have the feeling that BSU could kill both of these teams?
    * Hawaii (2) ugliest game on the sched
    * Idaho (+7.5) kibbie dome is where positive outlooks go to die
    * Nevada (-12.5) was SJSU’s run defense last week an anomaly?
    * Boise State (-21) their entire team is hurt and we’re only laying 21?

    * Tiebreaker: Total points in Boise State vs Louisiana Tech game 56

I have attended every home Boise State football game since 1992.

I totally agree with you on the Penn St line/comments.

Check this out: http://www.vegasinsider.com/college-football/story.cfm/story/920335

Forget the poll, I think it’s a load of garbage as evidenced by Oklahoma and USC still in the top 5. Just look at the bowl projections. My head says don’t get caught up in the number of “experts” picking 2 non-AQs, it will never happen, but my heart says YES, YES, YES! Not to mention the line on the potential Penn St/BSU match up. PSU -2.5?!? I need to take out that 2nd mortgage ASAP. What’s the over/under on the number of points Penn St would score on our defense? 0? 1/2? Either way, it’s a safe bet with the unders.

by MooreWalksOnWater on Nov 5, 2009 8:21 AM PST up reply actions

Big agreement here.

I was going to comment as much on another thread. Instead I’ll do it here where it might be deleted.

I could see Boise going with 3 conference losses if we played in PAC-10, but I really couldn’t solidify even 1 loss in the big 10.

I'm slipping.... badly

Yet another reason to move to another conference. WAC pick ’em is just not cool!

  • (+7.5) LSU – Good match-up here, I think Bama wins it by 7, the lone TD of the game.
  • TCU (-24)
  • Oregon (-7)
  • Penn State (-4)
  • Utah State (-2) – Can anyone describe what type of team Utah State is? They confuse me.
  • (+7.5) Idaho – I told myself last week I wouldn’t do this. But here I am, screwing myself over again.
  • Nevada (-12.5)
  • Boise State (-21)

I wanna win for the SECOND time in a row... :)

Alabama- They had a bye week… plus I think they are the best team in the country.
TCU- I hate picking them… just hate it
Oregon- Say hello to the new Pac10 champs
Penn State- Ohio State has not looked good this year
Utah State- this is a tough one but I like how Utah State has been playing—-close games!
Fresno State- I wanna choose Idaho… But Ryan Mathews is going to run ALL over them
Nevada— easy one I think
Boise State- This’ll be a blow out.. they are two “dinged” up to play at our level

  1. LSU-LSU exposes the Tide for the imposters they are. I’m not a fan of either, but I think LSU will pull out the win in this one.
  2. TCU-TCU curbstomps San Diego, even though I’ll be an Aztec fan this week.
  3. Oregon-Oregon continues to roll this week.
  4. Ohio State-Having watched most of the Penn St./Iowa game, I was left very unimpressed with Penn St. OSU is much faster than the Nittany Lions and win this one by at least 10.
Utah State-USU is much better than their record indicates. They win by 2 scores against an injury-ridden UH team.
Fresno State-Fresno, after having issues against USU, pull another rabbit out of the magicians hat and wins.
Nevada-Nevada stomps a hapless Spartan team.
  5. Boise State-BSU rolls easily 49-3

LSU (7.5) — LSU’s offense is terrible, but the Tide’s ain’t much better
San Diego State (24) — this is about the only chance for a let down TCU has left
Oregon (-7) — they really are pretty good
Ohio State (4) — two evenly matched teams (evenly mediocre)
Utah State (-2) — no comment
Idaho (7.5) — c’mon, for GameDay’s sake!!!
Nevada (-12.5) — good luck, Sparta
Boise State (-21) — let’s hope for a better showing on the four-letters……

I rocked last week! Going to make up a lot more ground this week. Watch out Mikrino!

Alabama – I am not too sold on LSU
TCU – Was gonna pick SDSU, but BYU sucks – nuf said.
Oregon – Spread is too little IMO
Ohio State - BIG 1110 ?
Utah State - And… WOW! They are favored?!
CSUF – If the spread was more I would have picked Idaho. Fresno could win by only a TD
Nevada – Spread seems good to me
Boise State - Still a big spread, but La Tech is banged up and BSU handled them last year.

Trying to reverse the last 3 weeks' luck.

LSU – still not sure how good Alabama really is…and with scrutiny on the SEC refs, hopefully they won’t be getting help.
TCU – I’ve always picked against them…apparently that’s where I’ve been going wrong
Oregon – Stanford to keep it within 7 when USC couldn’t? Yeah, right.
Penn State – what’s the over/under on Pryor turnovers?
Hawaii – Hawaii is bad, but Utah St is still Utah St.

This appears to be the week for victorious away teams.

9 LSU at 3 Alabama (-7.5) – Mark Ingram can’t carry the whole offense all the time
6 TCU (-24) at San Diego State – The Broncos don’t play a weaker team than SDSU
8 Oregon (-7) at Stanford – It can only help the S.O.S. right?
16 Ohio State at 11 Penn State (-4) – As much as I hate the Buckeyes, PSU won’t win this
Utah State (-2) at HawaiiHawaii played tough last week, and this is at home
Fresno State (-7.5) at Idaho – Can Ryan Mathews rush for a million yards in 60 minutes?
Nevada (-12.5) at San Jose State – I suppose this depends on which Nevada defense shows up…
7 Boise State (-21) at Louisiana Tech – Probably won’t even be as close as last week’s game vs. SJSU

Magnanimous M@tt's crystal ball - Week 10
  • #9 LSU at #3 Alabama (-7.5) < Alabama > LSU’s offense is horrible but so is Alabama at the time… So with the game being at home, I give Alabama the edge and able score 10 points at most on LSU.
  • #6 TCU (-24) at San Diego State < TCU > Okay, okay. After picking against TCU last week, I was wrong… (a big 45-0 wrong) They convinced me that they can score points against bad teams.
  • #8 Oregon (-7) at Stanford < Oregon > Ehhh… This, in my opinion, is the most difficult pick of the week. Can the Ducks stay focus after their big victory over USC Trojans?
  • #16 Ohio State at #11 Penn State (-4) < Penn State > Same applied to Alabama above – They’re both suck in my opinion but with the game being at home, I give Penn State the edge.
  • Utah State (-2) at Hawaii < Hawaii > Yes, they have injuries at every spot at roster but despite the Boise State blowout win/Nevada game, they play better at home.
  • Fresno State (-7.5) at Idaho < Fresno State > Believe it or not, Fresno is actually solid this year.
  • Nevada (-12.5) at San Jose State < Nevada > I’m unsure about this one… but seeing that most of you don’t give San Jose State a chance, I’m jumping on the wagon.
  • #7 Boise State (-21) at Louisiana Tech < BOISE STATE! > Easiest pick of the week.

Hopefully, it’s not too late to pick Boise State, as the game just kicked off. I’ll submit the rest of my picks in a second, but I wanted to get this one in.

And the tiebreaker: 48 points

by Egnowit on Nov 6, 2009 5:05 PM PST reply actions

The rest of the picks:

Alabama Going with the homefield advantage. This will be a close game, I think, but I think the difference will be more than 1 TD.
TCU TCU covered the 35 point spread last week. Why not a 24 point spread this week?
Oregon Why is Oregon just a 1 TD favorite? Oregon, by 10 or 14 points, at least.
Penn State With Ohio State’s anemic offense (even with their scrimmage against NMSU last week), they’ll struggle to score.
Utah State USU’s been a spread-covering machine lately, and Hawaii’s just a mess.
Fresno State Given Idaho’s season, it’s hard to pick against them, but they haven’t been too impressive in their last few showings.
Nevada Nevada is more than 2 TDs better than San Jose State this year. SJSU is a mess, and now that Nevada’s getting into the WAC schedule, they’ve figured out their offense.
