Why I Love Jerrell Gavins and Why You Should Too
Jerrell came to hang with my kids today and I tell ya, this guy has stolen my heart....
They played basketball, raced on the Xbox, watched bits of the Dolphins game and threw the pigskin around in the street.
My big kid's stock value in the neighborhood just went up 150%. Can you imagine him making THAT phone call? "Uh hey. My friend Jerrell is over playing football. You wanna come play?" Jerrell smiled that big ole smile the entire time he played with them and commented to the kids on their various strengths. He even told Austin's friend who wants to play CB in HS that he'd come work with him after the season is over.
Mom moment coming on - I know that we all like to talk about these guys and what they should or shouldn't do, but I tell ya, these kids are classy. The way they conduct themselves is something that our community can be very proud of and is a direct reflection on the manner in which they are coached.
I've got to figure that our guy is going to get some good playing time on Saturday and I hope that you'll be right alongside of me, cheering him on.
I am so proud to be a Bronco.

Awesome Awesome Post
That’s right, two awesomes. That was a great story and I’m not gonna lie, I’m filled with jealousy. It’s far too often the focus of an athlete off the field is when he’s done something wrong. Way to celebrate the classiness of a player. I seriously think I like Jerrell Gavins a lot more now.
One question though. What’s with the Huskies shirt?!?

Neighbor kid...
hahahah! His Dad is from WA but we’re slowly bringing Shane to see the light. He came with us for his FIRST Boise State game on Friday. That’s child neglect as far as I’m concerned! ;)
Thanks JRig. I was uploading the photos from my camera and came across the chest bumps with my boys and it brought tears to my eyes. Those will be blown up for Christmas presents for their walls.

Haha
Mostly kidding about the Huskies. Actually, I have tons of family from the Seattle area plus I lived there for a while myself, so I don’t mind them much. However, I’m still bitter about the ’07 loss. Grrrr.
I love those chest bump pictures too. Great idea making them into posters.

I know, right?
You should have seen all of the neighbors who suddenly had yard work to do in their front yards! hahahah!
I’m really, really excited for his prospects next year… He’s not the biggest guy out there, but he’s tough as nails and in your face. I like that.

Yeah from Florida
recruited out of JuCo in CA. I asked him about that today and he said that Coach H came to look at another guy and offered him a scholarship that day instead. I asked him what he thought of Boise and if he had to think about whether to come here or not and he said “I didn’t even know where it was – I thought it was in Oklahoma. I knew they had a really good football team though.”

Don't forget
I like Gavins a lot but Jamar Taylor will be back next season. He was pretty good last year as a true freshman.

I just don't think...
Thompson will be our number one. Unless he really improves his one on one coverage.

Well done
It’s easy for us to get on here and talk about who should start and who shouldn’t or point out players’ weaknesses, but it gets harder when you begin to understand that they are real kids and more than just a number.
Hopefully we here at OBNUG don’t cross that line too often. Of course, someone has to start and someone has to sit on the bench, but in the end we all wish them the best when they are given their opportunity to perform.
Thanks for giving us a glimpse into their lives and giving us some perspective. Wish him luck for all of us.

Nah
We’re solid on OBNUG. It’s a team sport for crying out loud and when you’re a devoted fan, you’ve got opinions. It’s just be really, really amazing to get to know Jerrell this year and have the privilege of seeing him as a person and not a stat or a number. We’ve had a banner year of adversity as a family and my kids won’t ever remember it as such. They’ll remember this as the year that Dad went back to school, met Jerrell and because of the kindness of a 19 year old kid, was the best football year ever. (Insert fairy tale music here.)

Rec'd!
Super-Rec’d…That, my friend, is a day well spent! Anytime one of your favorite athletes show up on your door (or anywhere for that matter) is a good time, because you get to see how they are really people, not just the local (or national) superstar.
Crissie…you’re the OBNUG MOM!!!

You're a dollface
Greekpadre. You bringing a girl to Saturday’s game? I would introduce you to orangecircus cause she’s cute as a bug and LOVES the Broncos, but she’s only 17. I’m still a mom first. ;)

Don't I wish Crissie...
And no offense to orangecircus, but I think that would go under a sketch title of “cradle-robbing.”
Plus I think my actual mom would kill me…“WHAT DO YOU MEAN SHE’s NOT GREEK!” (jk…kind of)

I have to agree
we’ll have to wait until she’s 18, then she’s quite the catch. :) And that is SOOOOO funny about your real mom! hahaha! I instantly pictured “My Big Fat Greek Wedding”. LOVED that movie. Well, stop by and tailgate with us next week. xoxo

Jerrell is going to start telling his buddies about your family’s kindness and soon you’ll have a bunch of Broncos hanging at your place.
Something tells me you wouldn’t mind.

And informing Jerrell and all the other Broncos of the greatness that is OBNUG.com?

????
Crissie,
How in the heck did you score a day with Jerrell?? Inquiring Bronco fans want to know!!
by typhoonblue on Nov 30, 2009 10:46 AM PST reply actions 0 recs
well
the story goes something like this. My husband is in a geography class with Jerrell (and Kirby too) and he sat by Jerrell the very first day. They just kind of starting talking (SHOCK because they’re both shy) and then Scott started taking notes for Jerrell when the team would travel. He asked him one day if he could bring the fam to meet him in the cafeteria and the rest just sort of happened. All of a sudden we were exchanging texts and hanging out.
Jerrell comes from a big family (he’s the 2nd oldest of 6) and he has siblings who are my kids’ ages. He just really likes the kids I think! He misses his mom quite a bit as well and I think he just enjoys having a “family” even if we’re only adopted. I told him yesterday that he has to remember who loved him when he was just a scrub. hahahah!
We are just blessed to know the guy. He’s really special.

Sweet Story!
And by sweet, I mean sweet as in awesome, and sweet, literally. :)
I’d better be sure my dad doesn’t read this, though. Otherwise he’ll know my ulterior motive for me wanting him to go back to college…
Seriously, I love those boys so much. I am so proud to be a Bronco when I hear stories like this, (or at least, even more proud). I’m convinced we have the classiest program in the Nation. And the classiest coach. I loved the fact that the coaching staff took responsibility for making sure all the players had a place to go for Thanksgiving. It made me so happy!
GO BRONCOS!
P.S. Pass on the OBNUG love to Jerrel. His adopted family just got a whole lot bigger.

Jerrell
Crissie,
Kudos to you and your family for extending your kindness and time to this young man. Being so far from home, I’m sure he enjoys having your family as a support system in Boise. Thanks for sharing this story in pictures and words. You are your family represent the “best of the best” as Bronco Nation fans. You also take fantastic pictures; thanks for sharing these as well!

Well
bless your heart Typhoonblue! We are fortunate to know Jerrell. He is truly a wonderful person. Thanks for the kind comments on my photos as well. I hope that they don’t get boring, but I’m such a visual person. I know you for one aren’t local and I think photos tell such a story. :) Jerrell is excited about going home to see his mom in Florida for Christmas and would you believe, he asked for some of my photos of him to take home to her. I was so touched! I wish I could get my hands on a sideline pass for Saturday because I’d send him home with 400! lol!

your pictures!
Your pictures are so good, no one could possibly get bored with them! Us out-of-towners especially enjoy them, since we can’t be there in person. The U-State road trip pictures were beautiful. I’ve never been to that part of the country, so your “pictorial” was a real eye-opener. Keep your pictures and comments coming!
