Around SBN: Todd Haley Is The Steelers Next Offensive Coordinator

Trent Lootens of the Arbiter has just reported that Austin Pettis is out for the year with a broken ankle.

This would be another huge loss for the offense. Will follow up with reaction and more details when available.

Amazing!

We have several quality players injured this year…and we STILL just keep rolling along! Talk about good depth from great recruiting and coaching.

by bobink on Nov 28, 2009 10:12 PM PST reply actions

I would be very nervous to play a SEC defense...

without Pettis catching well placed balls. This is the 2nd worse injury the team could face going into a BCS Bowl against an elite team. (the worst is obvious)

by Finloopio on Nov 28, 2009 10:15 PM PST reply actions

I agree

Other injuries I knew we could recover from. Someone is going to have to step up as a go to possession receiver in Pettis’ absence

by Nick Kroes on Nov 28, 2009 10:20 PM PST up reply actions

Call me naive

but I have faith… We are so deep at so many positions and so well coached. I desperately was hoping that AP would be back for a bowl appearance… Someone will step up.

Agreed.

Just ask Dan Paul if we have any depth.

I have faith but...

The passing game suffered when Pettis went out, so I’ll be a complete believer in the current WR depth when I see it.
Shoemaker is out. Burroughs can’t get things done. Potter hasn’t showed any real potential yet. Does Choate even have a catch this year?
As far as receivers go that leaves Titus and Kirby to get the job done.

The good part is we have a pair of tight ends that are really good. Maybe we’ll see a big game from them this week…at least in the first half.

That's what I was thinking

use the TEs and FBs more, run more formations with fewer WRs, maybe?

Yikes

We’re lucky we have the NMSU game to hopefully tune up and figure out how the offense will work without Austin before heading into a bowl game. Not that we should look past NMSU…but you know.

how would he know this already?

they said they weren’t re-evaluating him ’til Monday, and Coach Pete said it looked like a sprained ankle after the game.

i’m hoping this isn’t true.

Thank you, Nick Adenhart. You will always be remembered. #34

by howiestheman on Nov 28, 2009 11:03 PM PST reply actions

just watched the play again

it looked like his ankle got rolled, not snapped (ie Kaiserman). wouldn’t surprise me to see him sit out next week’s game, but i’m waiting til we hear official word.

Here’s the quote from the Idaho Statesman

Austin Pettis (left ankle) was on crutches and in a walking boot after the game and will be re-evaluated Monday. Coach Chris Petersen called it a sprained ankle.

Thank you, Nick Adenhart. You will always be remembered. #34

Yeah

its is a Twitter post after all…but that is a huge loss for the bowl game especially if it’s true. Pettis’ experience and hands are irreplaceable.

by the collinator on Nov 28, 2009 11:22 PM PST reply actions

Argh

In a picture taken after the game from the Statesman Pettis didn’t have a boot or a cast on. Hopefully this is premature.

argh

if this is true, this sucks. The sole remaining purpose for the NMSU game is to figure out who AP’s replacement for the bowl will be.

by killtacular on Nov 29, 2009 1:38 AM PST reply actions

Although I hate seeing AP hurt in any capacity, especially if it is going to keep him out of a bowl game, I thing the next great Bronco possession receiver is sitting on the wings waiting to breakout in the body of Kirby Moore. He has the size, the hands, and I have to think the understanding of how to get himself open based on the various defensive alingmentents of the secondaries. I am truly excited to see the future of this young man as he continues to grow and learn the system of offense under Coach Pete.

This was one of the very, very few times

I disagreed with Coach Petes playcalling. Why go for 2 when your about to be up 14-0 ? I just don’t understand some of the playcalling. Going for an extra two points and hurting Pettis for no reason is not my idea of a good call. Then again who knows whats really happening on the sideline, maybe they just didn’t want Brotzman in there.

To Coach Pete's credit.

He usually does 2-pt conversions in twos. The Pettis injury may have second guess the game plan.

damn!

those two idaho kids better step up.. burroughs hasent done anything all year except catch little screen passes that go no where. and when shoemaker gets back he better wake up. burn the redshirt on burks? i doubt it but this hurts really bad.

this has just been an injury filled season. i think we still have enough to beat iowa. but anyone else id be worried.

And Acrey

My husband saw him come out of the locker room (I can’t remember if he said crutches or not but I know he said he was definitely gimpy). Acrey and Mackey are really going to hurt too. Paul seemed to do just fine for Brockel, although I’m sad about his loss on a personal level. GREAT guy. Same goes for KaiserRoll. We talked to him the week after his break-out Hawaii game and just the nicest kid you can find.

Ok...so far

I haven’t seen a thing on the KTVB or Statesman website. Not only that, if it WAS broken, then why was Austin out there still holding the XP kicks in the first half. It wasn’t until halftime that he wasn’t put back in to even do that. I seriously think someone jumped the gun on this twitter post. So obviously everyone needs to calm down. Wait til Monday for OFFICIAL word to come out instead of relying on some idiot making a twitter post. I mean, since when did Twitter become official news? BADWORDx10!

Oh and another thing...

even if the BSU student newspaper is reporting this, no sources were named…just the typical rumor-mill “numerous sources”. That tells me that the “reporter” heard it from a friend who heard it from his cousin who heard it from her sister’s 3rd grade teacher. See where I’m going? Until it comes out in a real news website or a press conference, you guys are just jumping at shadows.

Stinks to get thise news

How about the Arbiter breaking the news over the Statesman or Dustin Lapray?
I have no problem with the 2 point try but wish Pettis was not the one running it…..all second guessing now.
It is time for Kirby Moore to fill the shoes of Pettis. After Young, who is primarily a flanker screen and deep threat….there is Moore, Burroughs and Potter? Ugh…..Could see more Efaw/Gallarda and the always immortal Paul in the passing game now. Do not see a redshirt being burned over this. Has anyone seen WR Michael Choate make a play this year?

All in All

it’s a good thing Iowa is the likely BCS matchup… I think Nevada is a better team than Iowa! So broken or not, let’s get him better for our N.C. run next season!

Iowa we can beat w/o pettis.

Bowl game

The good thing about bowl games is you have a lot longer to prepare than normal. Our staff will have them ready for the particular team we play. With or without Pettis, we have a awesome coaching staff that will make the right adjustments.
I wouldn’t prefer a TCU matchup. But if we won that game it would be big time. Possible #2 year end ranking for the winner of that game.

Jerrell is over for a bit this afternoon and he said that the team knew on Friday that the ankle was broken – AP’s done for the year.

as other people have said...

what happens if Pettis is out for the year? who steps up in the bowl game?
Young becomes our #1, eliminating the deep threat. Kirby becomes #2. Who’s #3?? Any chance we grab a defensive guy (CB or S) and convert him to WR for the game?

Thank you, Nick Adenhart. You will always be remembered. #34

by howiestheman on Nov 29, 2009 3:09 PM PST reply actions

thought the same thing

they’d never do it, but that would be fantastic!

but seriously, could Stanaway or Febis be converted? obviously, they have some speed and catching ability, so why not?

by howiestheman on Nov 29, 2009 3:58 PM PST up reply actions

Febis..

definitly has speed and he is like 6 3. really athletic.

do you really wanna pull him off defense though?

i’d rather take try a back-up first, so as to not weaken our defense.

by howiestheman on Nov 29, 2009 7:10 PM PST up reply actions

Oh no, I was just sayin

Besides Titus Young, we have three solid receivers in Kirby, Gallarda, and Efaw.

I think Iloka would be fun at receiver because he’s big and physical. But it was for purely hypothetical.

I’m excited for Burks and Hiwat to play next year too. Two big athletical receivers.

by JRig on Nov 29, 2009 8:08 PM PST up reply actions

oh yeah...

burks looks like another pettis potentially.. if there is such a thing.
then ware in two. another speedster. this is good recruiting. This is the talent we should have been getting since the Fiesta Bowl. Not Burroughs. even though hes a walk on.

by summitkopp on Nov 29, 2009 8:25 PM PST up reply actions

Sorry but Burroughs just isn't cutting it

I don’t understand why he keeps getting playing time.

by JRig on Nov 29, 2009 9:12 PM PST up reply actions

Brotzman factor?

Despite all of Brotzman’s problems this year, it’s always sounded like he’s been hunky-dory in practice…maybe Burroughs always does something amazing enough in practice to keep the coaches thinking “this will be the game” that he finally lives up to their hopes? Just a thought.

by Cougarflounder on Nov 29, 2009 9:29 PM PST up reply actions

yeah, i'm talking completely hypothetical, too

and Shoemaker should be back by the bowl, right? if he is, they should make him the #1, leave Titus as #2 and the deep threat, and start Kirby at #3.

throw in some Doug Martin, and we’ll probably kick the crap outta Iowa! ;)

Thank you, Nick Adenhart. You will always be remembered. #34

by howiestheman on Nov 29, 2009 8:25 PM PST up reply actions

and i just took a look around for info on Burks and Hiwat

i’m excited for them, too.

we’re getting some very interesting recruits now; guys we probably shouldn’t be getting (ie Burks, Billy Winn, etc)

Thank you, Nick Adenhart. You will always be remembered. #34

by howiestheman on Nov 29, 2009 8:44 PM PST up reply actions

True

It’s weird to start looking at recruiting for Boise State. I used to never care much since Boise State always seemed to make the most out of recruits that never showed up on anybody else’s radars.

by Nick Kroes on Nov 29, 2009 8:49 PM PST up reply actions

We'll B Ok.

Hopefully shoemaker is back by the bowl, although I realize he doesnt play Pettis’ position… if Kirby can learn some of the sets that revolved around Pettis… with him and potter we will be fine. Lets not forget who is throwing them the ball. Pettis had some great catches, but 85% of the time (not counting fades, although kirby had a nice 1 against nevada) the ball is put in a great spot for a reciever to make a catch.

I guess we will find out what is getting recievers open… Is it the system or the player? it seems no matter who we put it at any position (ok, minus borroughs) the system works around them and works for them.

This is Really premature, but Iowa hasnt seen anyone that can throw like we can, and that mixes up things like we do. We are going to have weeks to prepare, which should scare them.

Old enough to know better, too young to care.
