Ah, Thanksgiving. An extended weekend of football precursoring what bowl games will be doing all December and into January.
- Thursday, November 26th - 6:00 PM #3 Texas at Texas A&M [ESPN]
The Trap - The scenario that puts TCU in the national championship game begins with this game. Even if Texas is knocked out of the title game, it takes up it's Fiesta Bowl spot (pending the Big 12 title game) and likely knocks Oklahoma State out of BCS consideration. Either this game, or dominoes with the family! (I'll probably be doing dominoes)
- Friday, November 27th - 10:00 AM Illinois at #5 Cincinnati [ABC]
The Spread - A quality OOC game this late in the season? This definitely isn't the SEC. Cincinnati has had a long time to plan for Illinois, but the Juice has been known to pull off major upsets.
- 5:00 PM #9 Pittsburgh at West Virginia [ESPN2]
The Backyard Brawl - If the Big East could be said to have anything to offer, this would be it. It typically matches a stout defense against a potent offense, and this year shouldn't disappoint.
- Saturday, November 28th - 10:30 AM #12 Oklahoma State at Oklahoma
The Key - Why is it Big 12 Teams aren't ever televised? In fact, to my knowledge, there are no XM channels either. Oklahoma State looked pathetic against Colorado last Thursday, but then Oklahoma did the same thing against Texas Tech 2 days later. Let's all hope that OK State is knocked out of BCS at-large consideration, our largest competitor for a BCS bid.
- 6:00 PM Georgia at #7 Georgia Tech [ABC]
The Flip - This game always tends to be off the map when it comes to big rivalries. Although Georgia Tech seems the typical spoiler to Georgia in this game, this year it's the Georgia Bulldogs hoping to play up to their technical college counterparts.
Other games not making the cut:
- Friday, November 27th - 12:30 PM #2 Alabama at Auburn [CBS]
The Iron Bowl should be a mild afternoon watch for those of you needing to get off your feet from an early Black Friday morning. A meaningless game in regards to the SEC title; but don't tell that to Auburn.
- Saturday, November 28th - 11:00 AM New Mexico at #4 TCU
The Shoo-In - No doubt New Mexico has little chance in this game; but if you're a dreamer, go ahead and enjoy the first 5 mins! Welcome to the BCS, Horned Frogs.
- 1:30 PM - Florida State at #1 Florida [CBS]
The Prophet - If Florida State plays the way it did vs. Miami and BYU, this game could be fun. As much as I appreciate how accomplished Tim Tebow is, the non-invite to Kellen Moore's award chances really has my hide chapped.
- 3:00 PM - #21 Utah at #19 Brigham Young
The Holy War - I love this game every year, but the title is a bit misleading. I mean, Texas Christain vs. Brigham Youngs is more of a Holy War than against un-denominated Utah. In fact, they have one of the larger Institutes of Religon in the nation. The only time of the year I can really say without guilt, "GO COUGS!" (Sorry if I made a few of you taste stomach bile)
- 3:00 PM - Utah State at Idaho [360.com]
The Last Gasp - Idaho still wants that extra win to say they've had a truly successful season. And although a 3-8 Utah State doesn't look like anything, the Aggies have been playing with flashed of brilliance.
- 4:30 PM - Washington State at Washington
The Apple Cup doesn't really ever prove to be much outside of the State of Washington, and UW's rise in ... we'll call it ..."success" this year says this really shouldn't be a game. But, it has college football history written all over it, something that the state of Idaho could only wish for.
- 5:00 PM - Arkansas at #15 LSU [ESPN]
The Mad Hatter - This SEC match-up should be much more exciting than the Friday's Iron Bowl. A speedy Arkansas offense against an even faster LSU defense. Just for security, Les Miles will be putting the field goal unit in after ever 20+ yard gain.
- 6:00 PM - New Mexico State at San Jose State [360.com]
The Toilet Bowl - I commented pre-season on the NMSU/Idaho game that "I thought the toilet bowl would be played POST-season." This is as close to the post-season either of these teams will get, and the title fits appropriately.
- 6:00 PM - Notre Dame at Stanford [ABC]
The Sacking - Weis made some comments this week that made me feel slightly guilty about calling him a fat slob or something to that effect, reminding me that even his family has a life to live... and then he added to those comments, "I will never forgive [those] people." Really, Charlie? Nice way to represent a Christian school. Burn in the ND Hall of Shame, Weis.
- 8:00 PM - UCLA at #20 USC
The Fashion Show - Is anyone else excited to see the new tradition of using a timeout at the beginning of the game?
