Poll Watch - Week 11 Boise State Remains At #6 In All Polls.

What a game! Aside from the score being so lopsided, Idaho wasn't horrible, at least statistically. But just as Dirk Koeter said back in the day "Statistics are for losers". He may have been on to something. The hype built for the game would have made anyone believe that this should be a close game. Contrary to that hype, this was one of the most lopsided games in the history of this "rivalry". Needless to say Idaho is a vastly improved football team, but the thing they failed to consider is that Boise State in the WAC is like men among boys. The #6 ranked team reduced Akey's Army to nothing more than a Troop of Cub Scouts.

Star-divide

After ESPN snubbed Boise State all day yesterday, they receive some love from an unlikely source, Kirk Herbstriet?!

How did the rest of the Top 25 fare?

Florida won, but close wins don't negatively affect BCS teams. And no team is more thankful for that allowance than the Gators. Alabama took care of business against Miss. State. Could they reclaim the #1 spot again this week? Texas beat Baylor, but they scored all of their points in the first half and then just ran out the clock in the second half. Why not score 80 if you can. Style Points... Oh yeah, they are only needed for non-AQ's. TCU... nuf said. If you need more TCU go to www,ESPN-TCU .com Good thing that Cincinnati is a BCS team, WeVa took them to the last minute, but they came out victorious. Boise State, well, I couldn't say it any better than this:

Only plane available to fly the Vandies home was the BSU plane. They refused to board and demanded a bus. The city sent them the Bronco wrapped city bus. They asked if there was anything else and a herd of saddled broncos were brought in to carry them home.
They were last seen walking toward Salt Lake. No one had the heart to tell them that Moscow was the other direction. But what can we say? They're just used to seeing the Vandals football program headed south.  (HT KYBronco.)

Whoa! Georgia Tech was ranked #7?! Well they should be after crushing Duke. Can someone help me understand why LSU is ranked so high? LA Tech could have won that game, if they only just believed a little harder. Buh-bye USC?! This is just not the year for the "traditional powerhouses" and the pollsters just don't know how to handle that. How far will they fall? Yay! tOhio State is going to the Rose Bowl, woopi... sigh. I wonder if Notre Dame will be ranked again this year, You know someone will do it.Oregon got themselves back on track.  Houston pulled a Fresno; they were fun for a little while. How does BYU keep creeping back into the Top 25? Oh that's right, nobody can see their games. And the pollsters need them ranked to help justify moving TCU up.

Meanwhile in the WAC

San Jose State is still searching for an identity, and possibly a new coach. Is anyone worried about the Utah State  game this Friday? ...Anyone? New Mexico State got a much needed Hawaiian vacation after their brutal schedule. Oh yeah, and they "played" a football game while they were there. And what happened to Fresno State? Oh yeah, I forgot they do this every year. That is why I am not that worried about Nevada. And to think Fresno could have been ranked this week...

I don't expect much movement.

Maybe Boise over Cinci in the BCS.

Hello Stanford, welcome to #17

I supposed they would need to be ranked that high in order to justify keeping USC ranked.

Comforting?

The gap between TCU and Boise is less than the gap between TCU and Alabama.

Ranking

I would our best chance of a BCS is having the highest rank. The higher we are, the harder it will be to be passed over an at-large spot.

I wonder

Is BSU’s 10 point win on the road against La Tech more impressive than LSU’s 8 point win at home versus La Tech?

Depends

In an objective reality, yes, BSU’s win was more impressive. In the BCS-created reality, no, because LSU is in the SEC and BSU is in the WAC.

by marktgarten on Nov 15, 2009 10:32 AM PST up reply actions

Shouldn’t it be? If we’re the better team, shouldn’t we have more impressive wins?

LSU is not in the running for a BCS spot. We are.

by Egnowit on Nov 15, 2009 9:40 PM PST up reply actions

Sometimes . . .m

I think, why don’t the mid-major conferences just set up their own championship system. That would be as exciting for me as fretting over whether the big boys will let us play.

by marktgarten on Nov 15, 2009 10:30 PM PST up reply actions

Because it plays into their hands

Div-1A championships should be for Div-1A teams. Plus, if we break off into our own championship system, we won’t get any of their money. As bad as it sounds, it’s true. Us mid-majors won’t ever make the type of money those markets make… and we’re trying to take it from them. It’s economically sound and only ethically sound because we’re in the same NCAA subdivision. If we’re in our own system, we would have no claim to that money. Sen. Hatch would not like that.

What's that sound?

Why am I shocked week in and week out when BCS teams aren’t criticized for winning ugly? Must be nice to be Cincy, Fla, LSU, Pitt, etc… I wonder what that is like?

Why the HELL is BYU ranked again?!? Doesn’t anyone realize everyone in the Mtn West not named TCU is a JOKE?! Of course they don’t, nobody sees Mtn West games. More evidence: Utah still ranked despite making the trip to Ft Worth and proceeding to take a dump at the TCU 50 yd line. That and not beating a top 50 team all year.

Va Tech continues to prove my: “Nobody gets more respect for losing 3 games per year than Va Tech” Theory.

And how excited is everyone to see Ohio St in the Rose Bowl?!!? crickets Me neither. Can’t wait to see Pryor go 11-28 115 yds 0 TDS, 1 INT for like the 10th time this year.

(That sound is me beating my head against the wall.)

I have no clue about BYU

A winless New Mexico team took them to the wire yesterday. Unbelievable.

BCS

Yesterday was a GREAT day for Boise State’s BCS hopes (Thanks Trojans). This is how I see it:
There are 10 BCS bowl spots (counting the NC)—

SEC – 2 – Apparently I’m suppose to say “Duh” after this.
Pac-10 – 1 -with USC’s loss, which you can bet they would have gotten in with 2 losses over us otherwise, I think it realllllllllllly helped us.

ACC- 1 – If Georgia Tech wins there is no question they are it, If Clemson/BC upsets them in the champ game— I Still see us getting in over a 2 Loss- Probably ranked below #10 – GT team (explanantion below)

Big East – 1 – No one really likes Cincy now (See NC contenders). If They win out, A 3-Loss Pitt has no chance. A 2-Loss Pitt (Conf Champ) AND a 1-Loss Cincy team? See Below.

Big Ten – 1, Most Likely 2 – Ohio State Obviously. Would Iowa get in over us? Penn State? As much as we HATE Ohio State, they may have helped us in the long run this year. 2nd Team (Iowa or Penn State) explanation Below.

Big 12 – 1 – We NEED Texas to win out. No upsets from Big-12 North in the BIG-12 Championship would be great. Hook Em’ Horns.

TCU – Definitely in over us – I don’t think we can argue with that… They Look Mean. NC Contenders? For the sake of the Broncos- Let’s hope Texas and the SEC make the NC. If not, Texas has lost…probably in the Big 12 Champ. game and Nebraska or Kansas State may take our spot. Yuck.

Notre Dame: Sucks. Thank you for Sucking, Again. Although the Navy loss really sealed the coffin on that one (A ND win over Pitt Yesterday would have helped our BCS Cry in the long run).

That leaves 2 spots left.

The Maybes: 1-Loss Cincy (With Pitt as their loss), 2-Loss Iowa, 2- Loss Penn State, 2-Loss Georgia Tech, 13-0 Boise State

Odds:

1- Loss Cincy: If Pitt wins out beating Cincy it gets interesting. How far does Cincy Drop? Would 2 Big East teams get in over us? I see Cincy falling too far with a Late Loss to Pitt (I hope they would). The part that scares me is A 1-Loss Cincy takin in the Orange Bowl, Which Gets to pick B4 the Fiesta bowl. Then the 2nd Big Ten is taken and TCU in the Fiesta – leaving us on the street corner, again. A lot for that to Happen. Big East Gets 2 teams: 25%

Iowa: They win out. voters have seen them as overrated all year anyway. Will be hoping for no upsets in the ACC/Big 12 Champ Game while they sit…and sit… and sit… at home.
Iowa: 80%

Penn State: 3rd in the Conference— Would need a Iowa Loss… and some help. They aren’t that far back in the polls, But even if they do get in- Iowa Won’t. Big 10 is likely to get 2 teams without multiple and major upsets… So it really doesn’t matter to us (As far as getting in, although it could for who we play)
Penn State: 15%

2-Loss Georgia Tech: Their loss would come to Clemson/Boston College in the ACC title game. They are a quiet #7, although I’m not sure anyone wants to try and stop their option. Of course a 2-Loss Georgia Tech team (with a late loss) Would put them lower than #10. The Orange Bowl would love to have them, and could see them taking GT over us if it came down to it… But since the Orange Bowl gets the ACC Champ, They wont take the 2nd team out of the ACC as well….
Odds: 5%

Boise State: WIN OUT. If it happens, I see them getting in. And we might not be even be the “last” in line to get in. If for no other reason: Other teams aren’t getting it done. Our ranking shouldn’t make much difference this year. Boise State should root for NO upsets of Cincy, Texas, or Georgia Tech. Even if that means not rising (or maybe even falling a spot) In the Polls. The BCS game is more important than the #5-#7 ranking in the end.
Odds (If Undefeated): 70%

I’d say its starting to look a LOT better for us as the season moves on. Go Broncos (Go Bearcats (especially against Pitt), Longhorns, and Yellowjackets!)

Anyone think I’m Completely Wrong?

Big East – 1 – No one really likes Cincy now (See NC contenders). If They win out, A 3-Loss Pitt has no chance. A 2-Loss Pitt (Conf Champ) AND a 1-Loss Cincy team? See Below.

You gave Pitt one too many losses. They just have one loss. If they lost to Cincinnati, they’re a 2 loss team. I doubt a 2-loss Pitt gets picked above Boise State, though. A 1-loss Cincinnatti might, but even there, I doubt it.

I don’t think this matters, does it? As long as they’re in the top 15 in the BCS, a bowl can select them, whether they’re the 2nd place or 3rd place team. It’s quite possible that a 2-loss Penn State is selected over a 1-loss Iowa or an undefeated Boise State. See last year’s Ohio State team. (I think that the climate in college football is different than last year, though, and that bowls are more likely to select Boise State, especially considering how they’ve been highly-ranked all season long.)

by Egnowit on Nov 15, 2009 9:47 PM PST up reply actions

Oops-

Pitt would be a 1-Loss Conf champ, and a 2-Loss if lost to Cincy. Doesn’t Change my Thoughts.

Ah, I see you caught your mistake. :)

by Egnowit on Nov 15, 2009 9:48 PM PST up reply actions

haha, yes i did.

I also don’t think it matters if Penn State is behind Iowa in conference. It just made sense to me at the time they would be chosen ahead of them because of it… But then again it probably doesn’t. The main thing though was I am nearly sure that the Big Ten will get 2 teams so it really doesn’t matter which one.

Very frustrating how far we drop even after dominating performances. Just goes to show all of Idaho’s 7 wins really weren’t that heavy.

I'm not too thrilled with how close GT is getting

I think the BCS rankings finally have it right having no 1-loss team over any undefeated team. However, GT is gaining ground very quickly. It sure would be nice to be ranked in the top 5 when BCS bowl invites are being handed out. Go Florida State?
