Boise State Falls to No. 7 in the BCS Poll, there is no good in the world

And college football gives Boise State another collective kick in the shins.

The Broncos fell to No. 7 in the latest BCS poll after a 45-point win on the road against Hawaii. Was Hawaii that bad? Is beating BYU that good? Is there any reason why we're all still college football fans? Join in the comments after the jump.

Star-divide

Thanks to the OBNUG Intern for getting this post started. Give that man a raise or something.

It was another crazy weekend of College Football! Florida survives an upset minded Mississippi State. Alabama manages to squeak past the Vols. Missouri watched the Red Rival Rivalry and figured that they were better than Oklahoma, turns out they are not. Somewhere Thomas Byrd and Garret Pendergast are fumbling their pillows in their sleep. Cincinnati has an impressive victory over the Cardinals of Louisville. Iowa wins with a 4th and goal touchdown pass with 2 seconds to remain unbeaten. Was USC win impressive? TCU…never mind. Mighty Miami? Not so much. Hey LSU won, yippy. Oregon beat the team the beat USC…So Oregon > USC. tOhio State is trying to do what they can to get to the NC game. Oklahoma beat a ranked team, they should be ranked. Utah State beats La Tech? And Idaho got crushed by Nevada. Not only did they lose, they broke their covering streak, sorry wolfmanshow. What does the loss say about Idaho? What does the win say about Nevada? Who knows? New Mexico St. holds Fresno to 34 points, what happened?!

With that said, where will the Broncos end up. Was the beat down of Hawaii impressive enough for the voters to keep them at #4 in the BCS? Will they be jumped? Who is ranked too high? Who is ranked too low? Think Idaho gets any votes this week? Lets talk it out.

I was wondering where you were.

They stayed at #6 in the AP, as well. I thought if anyone moved TCU up over Boise, it would be the media.

Thus, it goes to prove that Mark May is not the media.

Oh Look

Oklahoma won and there back in the top 25. Yes wins over Idaho State, Tulsa, Baylor and Kansas are worthy of being in the top 25. I wish Boise could get that kind of respect.

I completely agree

Since when did being barely over .500 half way through the season merit a Top 25 ranking in anything? But they did beat Tulsa 45-0. They should probably be ranked in the Top 10. This is ridiculous.

Don’t our goals exceed just being in the top 25?

by Egnowit on Oct 25, 2009 12:58 PM PDT up reply actions

Here I am

Start by winning 6 Nal titles, producing tons of Heisman Trophy winners, the two longest winning streaks in NCAA football, and being a consistent power for over half a century. Nice win over the Sooners in the Fiesta Bowl but it will take some time. Meanwhile, hit the road and beef up that schedule. People are beginning to notice but it’s going to take some time.

Although probably not fair, I watch the games, see the goofy blue carpet and soft, soft schedule and I walk away thinking that circus has no business anywhere near the top 10.

Anyway, congrats on the great season.

Actually the past does matter.

The comment was made that you wish you got the kind of respect OU does. They have earned it. Playing one legitimate team a year will not get you the respect you want. Try playing in a real conference and take on 4 to 6 top 25 teams a year and then you can get that respect. If your conference can’t provide that competition then go to a different conference. Otherwise you need to schedule major OOC competition. You will most likely have to do “one and done” as no one will want to play on the blue turf. That’s the facts. But if you want the respect, you will have to do whatever it takes to get it. I think Boise State is a great program, but most people feel you actually have an unfair advantage getting to BCS games. You only have to win 1 to 2 games a year against decent competition and skate the rest of the way. Then you get big dollar bowl. Yes, you do get screwed out of playing for MNC but with the soft schedule you shouldn’t complain. Most teams have to play a harder schedule to get that BCS slot.

by What_the on Oct 26, 2009 10:54 AM PDT up reply actions

There’s plenty of difference between respect as a program and respect in the current years polls.

Can USC lose please?

All we need now is for USC to lose to Oregon.

by CaptainBronco on Oct 25, 2009 10:04 AM PDT reply actions

They are ranked

Because they lost to 2 ranked opponents by 1 point and lost to the #3 team in the nation by 3 points. The defense is ranked in the top 5 in most catagories and are using the backup quarterback and all new receivers and o line and are still 5 points away from undefeated. (Actually is would have to be 8 points to get the wins). They are there because they have played numerous ranked opponents. If you want Boise to get that respect. Go the Mountain West and play some real competition. You have a one game season this year and coast against inferior opponents the rest of the season. OU also destroyed Tulsa by 45 and you got out a with a 7 point win. It’s just the facts. They deserve to be in the top 25. Regardless of what you think. If TCU wins out then they deserve to go ahead of you. I respect your program but TCU has had the more difficult schedule. If OU played your schedule they would have a good shot of being undefeated as well. I think BSU is a great team but there is not reason to bring OU down for the schedule they have had to face this year.

by What_the on Oct 25, 2009 12:21 PM PDT up reply actions

Are you kidding me….they lost to BYU and we all see how much of a powerhouse they are.

by Mountngrown on Oct 25, 2009 12:29 PM PDT up reply actions

No, not kidding

BYU is better than all on your schedule with the exception of Oregon. We lost by one point with starting qb going down, terrible o-line, All American tight end on the sidelines as well. Injuries happen and we lost. But BYU is no slouch for OOC opponent. Neither is Miami. OU’s OOC is by far superior competition than all of yours. I give credit for Oregon. No credit for anyone else. Join the Mountain West and maybe with all the rumblings they have going on maybe that would be the icing on the cake that would make that conference a BCS auto qualifier. I understand your frustration but the system is the system. Your conference is your problem. Not your team.

by What_the on Oct 25, 2009 1:18 PM PDT up reply actions

Um.

I bet Tulsa is better than this years BYU team.

Fine

OU beats Tulsa 45-0. BSU beats them 28-21. I only got involved because above someone said OU didn’t deserve to be ranked. So if OU demolishes Tulsa who you had some trouble with I would think that OU deserves to be ranked. Tulsa, in my opinion, is not better than BYU. And since OU played both I think that backs up that logic. OU played poorly against BYU and should have won but the fact that OU completely demolished Tulsa would lead most people to put BYU ahead of Tulsa.

by What_the on Oct 25, 2009 1:32 PM PDT up reply actions

And BYU is ahead of Tulsa.

Their record speaks for it.

If I were to rank and my voice had weight in the college football world, USC would still be out of the top 10, behind Oregon; Oklahoma would be out of the top 25; and BYU would have only been ranked about 23 coming into TCU.

If you want to slot rank, go ahead. But the perception of both Oklahoma and Florida State have gone down. But BYU didn’t, because they won when their perception was high.

I’m a BYU fan right after I’m a Boise fan, but I’m also a college football fan, which allows me to understand placement and get a good size of measure of what teams are. BYU was a farce. We found this out vs. Florida State and one could even say the previous year.

Hmmm.

I seem to recall Tulsa spanking BYU when they were the MWC champions in 2007.

Yes, they’re different teams, but do you even KNOW who you played last week? BYU’s defensive secondary is atrocious. Tulsa would have a field day with them.

by BoiseFanSince98 on Oct 25, 2009 10:14 AM PDT up reply actions

MWC = weak this year

TCU will eventually pass Boise State because they will get credit for beating ranked BYU and Utah teams. Both should not be in the Top 25 and are highly overrated. I don’t understand why BYU is still #26 in the AP poll. They should be down where Florida State is and should not be getting any votes. Utah hasn’t played a single impressive game… oh wait… they did beat San Jose State and Utah State. However, TCU will stomp them because they are the Boise State of the Mountain West and will dominate their weak conference foes. Meanwhile, Boise State will get the shaft from the media because Utah has had two great seasons this decade and happened to win their BCS games, which means that the MWC is so great and such a tough conference. Reality proves that Utah hasn’t had a great team every year . They had two good seasons and then they re-build for two or three years before they can compete again.

by forum8usa on Oct 25, 2009 10:28 AM PDT up reply actions

Maybe

I am a big fan of what you guys have done, but I don’t think this is your year. To be quite honest:

If BSU was in the MWC this year they might well win it all (I mean until you play the games how do you know, right?), I think it is very possible. Then again, they might end up with 2-4 losses—you guys don’t seem to have the killer instinct you had in previous years. If they played TCU or BYU’s schedule, yeah, problematic. A lot of those teams that play BSU close are far, far, far worse than FSU, Clemson, CSU, Air Force, BYU, Utah . . . .

You’d own New Mexico, and UNLV, I’d give you Wyoming and SDSU in closer games, but clear victories. After that, it’d be game to game. Depends on where you played them all, you guys are spanking tough at home, that’s for sure (I can’t see CSU winning at Boise).

Remember, you guys said the same exact stuff last year and TCU handed you your behinds—yes, the score was close (Paterson’s teams often have close, grind the down wins), but that game wasn’t close at all, not even, not a little bit, not kind of—you guys got shoved from one end of the field to the other. You were physically dominated in a way that showed your weakness: you might be finesse teams, but real power games areoutta your league. It’s rare to see two teams called as close as those two were, where one is so physically superior that it’s painful to watch.

You guys get them again this year and they very well could absolutely murder you, you’re not playing as well, they’re better than last year. Last year you guys should have gotten an at large with Utah in the BCS, it’s a shame you did not. That would have been fantastic, see BSU and Utah beat the big boys! Utah doesn’t have it this year, but TCU looks tough. We’re the only thing left on their schedule, and while we do play well there, I don’t see it . . . .

Your best draw if you make the BCS? Cincinnati, they’re definitely beatable by you guys. But if you guys make the BCS and pull say, the loser of the SEC? I don’t think you got it this year, while you could stay with a so-so OK team in a year that was kind of off for the Big-12 as a whole (and with arguably the finest team you guys ever had), the second place SEC team’s defense will murder you guys, they will be tougher than TCU’s, there is no way you guys would play with ’Bama or Florida. I think you could hang, maybe, with Georgia Tech, depends on which team showed up. At their best they are a decent team, but so are you guys.

So, I’m pulling for you guys to get the nod, and to draw Cinncy, and I’ll root for you.

Heck, if you guys get to the Sugar Bowl I’m driving over from Tallahssee and wearing Orange and Blue!

Best of luck

Our system of offense isn’t setup to put up huge numbers for an individual, we have 4 running backs getting in the game and our defense sets up short fields. Hughes is 50 times better than any defender on Boise’s roster. Just ask Kellen Moore about Hughes? Wow you made it on a list that must mean that you would beat us just like last year, oops wait we beat you last year while playing horrible.

The coaches must have loved BYU

TCU leaps to #6 in the coaches poll and closes to within 21 votes of BSU. Yet they drop BYU from 16 to out of the poll for the loss. [which I agree that they shouldn’t have been ranked to begin with]

Oregon needs to keep winning if the Broncos want to stay ahead of TCU. TCU still has an overrated Utah team on the schedule..

TCU will likely pass the Broncos today...

Haven’t seen the BCS rankings yet, but based alone on the ground TCU made up in the human polls, they will probably pass the Broncos when the rankings are released today. Last week the Broncos combined score was .8083 and TCU was at .7139. Most of that margin was due to the human polls.

While the computers didn’t love BYU, they did view them as higher than Hawaii, so TCU will close the gap in the computers as well. The bad news is that the computers do love Utah which will help TCU even more if they win out.

It will take a TCU loss or a two non-BCS teams in order for BSU to go to a BCS bowl.

I like our ranking at this time. We play better with a chip on the shoulder.

Texas may lose to OSU.
USC will lose to UO.
Iowa will lose to Ohio State.
TCU may lose to Utah.

Here in Portland the Duck fans are very pumped for the USC game. Sure do wish that BSU could get into the PAC-12. It really is something with the larger stadiums and playing teams like UW and USC. POLITICAL ANIMAL

Try not to apply logic and reason to the college ranking system. It is a species problem, humans are simply following the power and greed thing that always screws things up.

The old money programs manipulate the entire system, think of it as wall street and we BSU are simply a little outsider this a perceived threat. May and Herbie and the rest of the goons are employed by the old money as well as the journalists and all others paying the mortgage.
BSU is a threat to all of their little worlds.

One of the keys to making this system change is for a non-BCS team to make into the title game. The old money programs will squeal like the greedy pigs they are and demand a playoff.
TV is the key to make the change, we need the executives to be more creative with programming and cut a deal that actually finds the best each year. It is so great in college basketball when their is a King crowned every year, no questions about it at all.

i’m a utah fan first but i see the writing on the wall. utah will be beaten by a score of 31 -17. if i were you i might worry about nevada. nevada has a better chance of beating boise than utah does over tcu. i do expect both teams to go undefeated and goto bcs bowls.

with a lackluster performance at msu a MSU team that got beat by central michigan no offense to cmu but seriously IOWA? they would get romped by TEXAS maybe not so much bama or florida but if anyone is #1 texas is IOWA? i dont get it, and seriously TCU? to bad the computers cant tell that BYU was grossly OVERRATED…THIS is exactly why we need a playoff system!!!!

I still see us getting into the BCS. Even 2 non-AQ’s may go. They shouldn’t, but to see Boise get robbed 2 years in a row… I think the bowl representatives can’t look past that.

The problem is that you guys still have the perception of being a middle of the road bcs conference team in a really bad league. UW fans threw the BSU loss in our face all week long. Wow, really Idaho, did you just give up 70 to a team that scored 0 on a team with a defense that leaks like a seive (ND)?

TCU-BYU

So I was at the game yesterday and I can assure you that TCU is not better than Boise. (Of course I don’t need to convince anybody here of that.) BYU actually moved the ball fairly well against them, but had a lot of drives killed by penalties and turnovers. Same story on the other side of the ball. The Cougars had them stopped a few times but TCU’s drives were kept alive by penalties. This is not to build BYU up, they are not a good team this year.

Don’t worry, up in the stands my cousin and I finally figured out what was going on. The MWC was not going to risk not having a team going to a BCS bowl, so they couldn’t allow BYU to upset or even come close to TCU. We love conspiracy theories. Looks like it worked though.

by BSUDrew on Oct 25, 2009 6:06 PM PDT reply actions

We destroyed them

Listen, I understand that you want to underscore everything TCU will do for the rest of the year, but be fair, we stomped BYU, they only moved the ball because Patterson allowed them to have the middle of the field and the short routes. He knows that BYU lives off the long pass plays. I know its fun to throw conspiracy theories out there but they could have called us for holding every other play and we still would have won. We have better athletes and a better coaching staff. They only had two turnovers and one of them was forced by the best DE in the country Jerry Hughes. Penalties do happen and your telling me that Boise hasn’t had a single drive kept alive by penalties?

by TCUJOHN on Oct 26, 2009 8:12 PM PDT up reply actions

Ya gotta wonder

Does the number of teams jumping BSU have to do w/ some “tweaking” of the computer rankings? I mean, c’mon…Iowa BARELY beats MSU. USC has a bit of a struggle w/ OSU. Alabama gets LUCKY w/ a blocked FG. Florida gets help by the reffing crew to pull out a win. TCU manhandles a team that had no reason being in the top 25. BSU does what’s expected and facerapes UH, but drops 3 damned spots? I’m raising the BS flag here. At least the human polls have it about right, although I wouldn’t necessarily move TCU up so many spots.

I think TCU will get beat by the end of the year. They aren’t used to the spotlight and will let their rankings go to their collective heads. They do it every year. They wind up losing to a team they shouldn’t lose to.

I also think UO will beat USC. Not only beat them, but beat them by at least 2 TD’s. I caught part of their game this weekend, and they’re rolling right along.

Iowa will lose, IMO. I watched the last part of the Iowa/Penn St. game and they looked like a bunch of slow, fat slugs. And going off the fact that they barely beat Arkansas St, MSU and Northern Iowa, I really think they’ll drop at least one if not more.

God this weeks rankings have me irritated. /faceplantonmykeyboard…repeatedly

Unfortunately,

that UTAH is not that good. Cain floats the long ball. We should’ve won that game handily but some bad ball security let them back in it.

The other thing: I’ll be surprised if we beat USC as much I hate to admit it. ‘SC can neutralize the spread and we can’t really attack the secondary, which looks to be the most vulnerable.

Iowa will lose.

BUT

But to compensate for the spread, what usc throws 2 or 3 lbs in the middle of the field and man on man if massoli can run, run the option get it to dickinson and his great backs i think oregon wins big. Oregons “d” has really stepped up even with a ton of injuries. ok granted sc will move the ball n score but if oregon gets the ball going on the ground sc throws 8 in the box that to stop the run that opens the spread right back up and im sure chip kelly has already started to study sc and how ore st moved it and how nd moved it against them. plus playing at home in such a hostile territory sc will crumble just like at UW.

None of Boise State’s remaining opponents ranks in the top 60 of this week’s Sagarin ratings. The only top-60 team left on TCU’s schedule is Utah, and the Utes must play the Frogs in Fort Worth.

If neither team loses, the higher ranked of the two on Dec. 6 will get an automatic berth into the BCS, and the other will have to hope for an at-large invitation from one of the bowls. There’s never been a season with two teams from non-automatic-qualifying conferences in the BCS, but there has also never been a year when two were ranked this high so early.

Why are ya'll mad at us?????

Hey Boise State fans,
First of let me say that you have a fantastic team and deserve to be in the top 10, but don’t get mad at TCU. We are in the same boat as you, we have to be perfect every year to even sniff a BCS bowl and it is complete crap. The only reason we jumped you is because all of our best wins are on the road, that is why Iowa is number one in almost all of the computers. THE BCS as a whole is horrible, the first thing they should do is eliminate automatic bids, it should be the best 12 teams playing not a 8-4 ACC champ like Florida State a couple of years ago. One of us will get screwed unless they take us both, but more more than likely they will take a 10-2 Notre Dame, because of their history. Forget the fact that they haven’t been relevant since 1989 and I think both of our teams would beat them easily. So don’t hate on us we are just doing what we have to do. Come to the Mountain West and they can’t deny us an automatic bid.

by TCUJOHN on Oct 25, 2009 8:29 PM PDT reply actions

Less mad than frustrated.

The BCS powers play a game that pits us against each other. It’s frustrating, and if you ask almost any BSU fan (or TCU fan, probably), they’d both say that both teams deserve a BCS bowl. And if we knew we’d both be able to get one, we’d be cheering each other on.

I know that because Cincinnati will lose to Pitt and Iowa will lose to Ohio State. I knew we would be getting killed on the boards and I just wanted to defend my boys. We are a damn good team and we deserve respect. Just ask Texas, A&M, OKST., and Oklahoma they will never play us. At least Tech has some balls. They’re ranked 9th there, behind the Broncos. It’s the silly voters, who have them ranked 4th despite having a loss, and no win over a team as good as Oregon.

Iowa, you can blame on the computers if you’re so inclined.

I really think that Florida and Bama might choke eventually also. They haven’t very good the last two weeks. Texas seems to be the only one that looks like clear sailing. Iowa will lose eventually and Cincy will lose also.

What would be really funny is if everyone ahead of of us and TCU started losing and everyone ended up with 2 loses. Then you have a TCU and BSU as the only remaining unbeaten teams playing for an NC. Mark May’s head would explode! That would be the greatest thing ever. Not going to happen but we can dream. I really hope Oregon pulls it off in Autzen this weekend and it gives us a boost. BSU and TCU both playing in games this year would be great. I think either team could play with anyone in the nation right now.

Bad News-It's all about the Benjamins

The orange or sugar bowl would probably choose 2 loss LSU over BSU due to its fan base.
And if Penn State or Ohio State win out, they’ll probably get in as well, because the Big Ten is supposedly so amazing. As long as OKST loses to Texas this weekend there should be no worries from the Big 12 anyway.

by ce'sped azul on Oct 25, 2009 10:11 PM PDT up reply actions

Fact of the matter is, Boise beating Oregon at home was a good solid win, and is better than any one win TCU has so far. TCU winning at Mormonland, Death Valley and Virginia is a superior slate to anything that Boise has. In the end, the reputation of the Mountain West as a superior conference to the WAC and TCU’s win over a similar Bronco squad last year will push the Frogs into the BCS over Boise if both finish undefeated. The system sucks, but that’s probably how it ought to be.

As for Iowa, their opponents have a better w/l record than all of the unbeatens, including the SEC sloggers, so their rating is far more valid than Cincinnati’s.

by HawkeyedFrog on Oct 26, 2009 12:55 AM PDT reply actions

MWC a superior conference than the WAC? I beg to differ than that.

At least this year anyway. BYU had no reason being ranked even with the win over OU. Look at OU now. They’ve dropped 3 already this year and can conceivably drop at least one more by the end of the year. Utah is only ranked because of their bowl win last year. Plus with their loss at an Oregon still rediscovering themselves after the loss at BSU, they should’ve dropped like a rock in a pond. TCU had problems with mediocre BCS teams. The bottom half of the WAC is even with the bottom half of the MWC. The middle of the WAC is better than the middle of the MWC. All in all, I’d give the slight edge to the WAC.

Funny thing about last year’s bowl. BSU’s team wasn’t nearly as good as it is this year and you guys BARELY beat us. This year, I’d take BSU to win a rematch between the two, hands-down.

As for Iowa, you can’t tell me that they’re better than both TCU and BSU. With a miracle win over an FCS team, a 3 point win over a Sunbelt team and a literal last second win over a crappy Big 10 team, you seriously think they DESERVE their ranking? Gimme a break. Their ranking is the most laughable of the weekend.

Anyone listen to Brad Edwards last night on ESPN?

He said basically the same thing he said the week before,

Spots 4-8 in the BCS are essentially tied. He said not to pay attnetion to the rank, but rather pay attention to the BCS averages. 4-8 are all so close, one game can completely upset the order of the four teams, as evidenced last weekend. He closed by saying to expect this flip-flopping to happen again before the end of the year, especially if a loss hits a top 8 team, which is likely. Last weekend was the first time all year that no team in the top 8 lost.

I agree somewhat with his logic. But obviously “winning pretty” and “style points” go right out the window when talking about the Broncos. The double standard is what gets me. Alabama, Iowa, and USC have to squeak out wins at the end of games, and they throw out terms like “tough” “hard-fought” “SEC football”, and on and on. Give me a break! Every team has those games in every conference. The pandering is out of control.

TCU played well I have to admit. So did Boise State. But BYU looked as inept as Hawaii did. Beating a ranked team should carry more weight, no doubt. I’m just not so sure BYU should’ve been ranked.

Boise State - The best in all the land (The "land" being Idaho, and large parts of California, Oregon, and Nevada.)

by Mikrino on Oct 26, 2009 6:08 AM PDT reply actions

First, do you guys understand the BCS? As you said, no one in the top 8 lost. So BSU isn’t going to be moving up in the polls. If you looks at the numbers for polling, BSU stayed exactly where they were. Here are the point rankings that BSU had last week, and this week.

.8032, .7817, .840
.8046, .7810, .740

The Harris and Coaches poll numbers are the same, but BSU got absolutely hammered in the computers, because the computers aren’t allowed to use margin of victory. So it all comes down to strength of schedule and wins and losses. Nothing else. So every game that BSU plays the rest of the season, they will likely fall in the computers (unless people above them lose). Heck, Oregon has already passed BSU in the computers and the Ducks still have the top half of the Pac-10 to play (USC, Arizona, Stanford, Oregon State) . If the Ducks win out (big if, but this is all theoretical), they will pass BSU. Pollsters will be split even with the head-to-head loss, but the computers will push it over the top.

You can whine all you want about all the bias and the pandering, but it’s the unbiased sources that are killing you guys, not the biased ones.

First no one is saying Boise State should’ve moved up, so slow down Turbo.

Second, according to rivals.com SOS is not part of the BCS formula. In any event, why don’t you pray to the SOS gods that Oregon beats USC this weekend, that’s what I’m doing.

Third, BCS Guru Jerry Palm was quick to point out this,

“Keep in mind, this probably isn’t permanent,” said Palm, who owns and operates CollegeBCS.com. "A lot can change. We’re showing the computers are fickle.

and this,

“TCU has to go out and put up appropriate numbers on opponents,” Palm said. “They are a 13-10 win away from losing ground.”

Judging by TCU’s performance up to last week, it likely a 13-10 game will come their way.

He also said if both Boise State and TCU go undefeated, TCU will be ahead.

He just thinks it will be very close and could come down to the final weekend,

“If you made me go to Vegas and bet on it, I’d bet on the Frogs,” Palm said. “It’s just not a sure thing.”

As I said on another post, there’s a lot of football still to be played.

Oh, I missed you Mikrino….

Did you even bother reading what I wrote? You and a lot of other people are complaining of all sorts of stuff, like when you said, “pandering is out of control.” So while you weren’t complaining about BSU not rising, you were complaining about a whole lot of other stuff, and none of the things you were complaining about had anything to do with BSU’s drop in the polls.

Also, while SOS is not a direct part of the BCS formula, it plays a massive part in the computer rankings, as the computer rankings are not allowed to use margin of victory.

And yes, there’s a lot of football left to be played. So I don’t know why you guys got all flipped out in the first place.

Pandering yes, by ESPN, to BCS teams who look awful when they win, and are praised for it anyway. Especially when it’s the exact opposite for Boise State. But I never said Boise State should have moved up in any poll. If anyone didn’t deserve moving up it was Iowa and USC.

ESPN talking heads said all week leading up to the Tulsa game how it was Boise State’s “toughest remaining game on their schedule”. If anyone actually watched the game, they saw Boise State dominate Tulsa everywhere but the scoreboard, similar to when they played Oregon. But since it was only a 28-21 win, BSU looked unimpressive, “barely got out” with a win.

A week later Iowa and Alabama win on the very last play of their games. Games in which they looked out matched, and they get credit for “tough, hard fought wins”. Meanwhile Boise State completely demoralizes a conference opponent 54-9, and its basically ignored.

I have to agree Mikrino

I was watching the BSC show on ESPN last night and Shaun King needs a full frontal lobotomy, along with a prostate exam. He argued FOR Iowa and how the “good teams find ways to win” and how they should play for the NC. I seriously would’ve shot my television had I had a gun. Instead I had to settle for flipping him off…well flipping the tv on which he appeared off. All the other analysts did pretty much the same thing for the other top teams that struggled. Yet going back to the UC-Davis and Tulsa games, you hear the term “unimpressive” used extensively and repeatedly in the same breath. THAT, ATQ, is what Mik is talking about pandering.

First, this pandering you speak of doesn’t affect anything. It didn’t affect the polls, and can’t affect the computers, so I still don’t understand why you’re so upset.

Second, you can talk all you want about double-standards and all that. But when the Broncos struggle with UC Davis and Tulsa (at least in the box score), Boise State will get dinged for it, because those teams suck. No one cares that you guys killed Hawaii. Hawaii blows. They are ranked 121st in the nation in Sagarin and are simply an atrocious football team. Michigan State State and Arkansas (who other top 5 teams struggled with) are top 50 football teams. As someone mentioned, there’s not even a top 60 team left on BSU’s schedule. With the BSU’s strength of schedule, they need to be beating the crap out of every team they play, and they just haven’t done that.

You may not like this, but there is a difference of struggling with Tulsa , and struggling with Arkansas. Boise State is a good team. They get A LOT of respect (they’re 5th in the nation). Finding a way to win is important. But if BSU wants to be in the conversation of the best few teams in the land, they can’t afford to have any close games. The competition level is just not the same.

That is true

I am sure that we will see a lot more scores like we saw against Hawaii throughout the rest of the season. The only game that could be different is against Nevada. But, Boise State knows how to shut Nevada’s offense down and will do it again.

I thought that Idaho would have had a better showing against UNR, it just makes me think that the Idaho game will be that much more of a beat down. There is nothing that any of us can do about anything right now. Lets just let it go and hope for the best.

There is no reason that two non-AQ’s can’t go to a BCS game, this could be the year to make it happen.

Yes there is: $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$ With the amount of money at stake, I just don’t see any of the bowls going with a second non-AQ conferences team. As much as it sucks, at large bids are in no way about who deserves them, they are simply about which teams will make that specific bowl game money. This is one of the reasons why Big 10, Big 12, SEC always get the second bids, because those schools have larger bases that will draw massive crowds and TV ratings.

I understand that,

however with all the talk about that over the last couple years, if it would or could happen, this would be the year for it. But all of this speculation is irrelevant if either team stumbles and loses a game.

If ND is eligible, it would be awfully tough for a non-AQ team. Auto slots would go to the big 6, TCU/BSU, ND, then at large would go to the second SEC team, so there would only be one slot left, for a possible one-loss Iowa team, possible one-loss Penn State, possible two loss USC or Oregon, the ACC runner up that doesn’t have to go to the championship game.

Notre Dame really screws everything up.

Also, I’m not implying that the ESPN pundits are affecting the polls, I’m just saying they’re morons.

Explain how there’s a difference? And don’t give me that “they’re a BCS team” crap. A crap team is just that…a crap team regardless of conference affiliation.

I agree

Listen, BSU has to schedule real teams out of conference. You can’t just wait until somone is willing to give you a home and home. You want to prove your relevant and you schedule Tulsa as you OOC road game. As a TCU fan trust me no one will give us a home and home so every year we are going on the road to Oklahoma, Texas, Clemson, Arkansas next year, as well as Texas Tech. We also have scheduled LSU in the next couple of years. BSU went to Georgia a couple of years ago, that is the game you need to be scheduling every year. LEAVE THE WEST COAST!!!!!

You have played Oregon and Oregon state home and home, and washington. Just giving a broad reference, but I guess it’s easier to be petty when you have no real facts to backup an argument. Enjoy the girls with cankles.

They have also played,

Arizona State, UCLA, Wisconsin, Arkansas twice, South Carolina, Louisville(in Memphis), and Georgia. I haven’t played anyone, I just watch. Just to broaden your reference for you, you left some stuff out.

ALL of those games were on the road and none included a home and home series, Chief.
So don’t run me the line that Boise State refuses to schedule one way games against bigger schools, because it simply isn’t true. Boise State has always traveled like any other NAQ team since joining DIA. Take into account the fact they travel to Louisiana and Hawai’i every other year and I’d wager they travel a few more miles than most schools. Florida, for example hasn’t played an OOC game outside the state of Florida since 1991. How’s that for not traveling (The game was at Syracuse, IN A DOME)?

I guess you wanted real facts. So real facts you get.
And for the record, my wife doesn’t have cankles.

I gotta say, I am disappointed in the new BCS rankings.. Although not really shocked that we dropped. I figured it’d happen eventually, just didn’t think it’d come after a 45pt win.. Which to me makes no sense..

I think the MWC has figured out a system to beat the system. Have 3 teams play average at best OOC schedules. Then make those 3 teams play eachother late in the season. Hoping that atleast one of those teams is undefeated and the other 2 only have 1 loss. That way all 3 will be ranked when they have to play each other, thus making a “stronger” sos. and give them quality wins. If all goes well 1 team will finish undefeated and have “quality” wins vs. ranked opponents… and 2 garbage bcs teams. So far it is working perfectly. It worked last season with Utah, now it’s working again this year with TCU. The WAC just needs to find someone that doesn’t choke on a regular basis in games vs. average bcs teams.

by Ihavenofriendzz on Oct 26, 2009 9:16 AM PDT reply actions

BYU

I don’t think ANY of us can make the case that TCU, Utah’s, or BYU’s OOC schedule was “average at best.”

Oklahoma, Oregon, Virginia, Florida State, Clemson… all these are really good teams. And only one of them played on a MWC teams home field.

Sure, we can say that these teams are nothing NOW, but when they scheduled them, most of these teams were powerhouses.

I’m just saying, don’t take any credit from the MWC scheduling. I would only hope that we could be so fortunate to have a schedule like that. Not even our schedule next year compares to what BYU and TCu put on their docket.

While those teams are BCS teams,

I’ll give out a reminder.

OU-WIN—OU sucks this year. They can conceivably lose another game before the end of the year.

Oregon-LOSS—The ONLY good team listed…and Utah lost to them. I see the Ducks winning the PAC 10 this year.

Virginia-WIN—TCU barely beat them. Hell, Virginia lost to an FCS team. Or was it a DIII team? I can’t remember. Regardless, that was a HORRIBLE loss for Virginia.

Florida St.-LOSS—Florida St. sucks nuts this year. And they face-rolled BYU, stole their milk money (since they can’t steal their coffee fund money…honor code violations ya know?), AND kissed all the BYU players’ girlfriends.

Clemson-WIN—This is another squeaker of a win. At most I’d say this was a decent win for TCU, although I wouldn’t hold out hopes for the decency to hold til the end of the year. If history repeats, Clemson will wind up sucking as is the norm for them.

Virginia lost to william and mary lmfao BYU only beat the sooners cause bradford was out, and otherwise byu was overrated to begin with they got crushed by FSU what else is there ??? a half-ass’d utah team that lost alot of players from that sugar bowl team last year specially their star qb johnson. so overall tcu get off your high horse you haven’t beat anybody. I am glad you think so highly of Oregon

Will you guys get off the Oregon win, I am glad that you beat them at home on opening weekend, but since that game they really haven’t beat a team that is any good. Using the logic I have seen on this board, they beat a completely overrated Cal team, a UCLA team that couldn’t score on some high school teams, a 3-5 Washington team, an overrated Utah team, a crappy Purdue team and Washington state who might be the worst team in the BCS conferences. Oregon faces the first real team they have seen since Boise, let’s not crown them a top 5 team before they play the meat of their Pac-10 schedule. SC is fast and always plays up in big games, They might look mediocre some times, but don’t forget that they have at least 20 NFL draft picks on that team while Oregon maybe has 4-5. Let’s see how good that win looks after the last 5 games. Don’t forget that Clemson could still win the ACC, they are the leaders in the Atlantic division. The first BCS win for Boise was great, but remember you played an OU team with PAUL THOMPSON, a converted wideout for a QB and OU lost two other games that year. Also remember we beat OU too, but we did it in Norman.

ANDDDDD look at oregon star RB Blout out, the QB’S been banged up, they have 3 starting Corner backs out for the season along with a starting lb and ol. If you take those injuries and apply them to any other team i think they wouldnt even do as half as good as the ducks has done to overcome adversity and fight through every game convincingly. Who ever is calling the shots and feeding the B-LS-T into the computers for what they claim are BCS standings should be removed. I think that all of the polls should use the same info, criteria and points or whatever they use to decide who, what and where teams should list in the standings and it should all be fair to all 120 teams, it should have nothing to do with favortism, $$$$, or location the teams are from. What ever happened to fairness and honesty????

Maybe

Congrats to TCU. Given how the system is set up I expected to get jumped. Last year BSU was 9 and TCU 11. I assume that Ohio St. was 10 or maybe 12, so I can kind of see why they took O St.. But I really want both TCU and BSU to stay in the top 7 or 8. I would really like to see what the BCS would come up with to keep one of us out. It would expose the BCS for what we all know it is, not an effort to pair the best teams in the country, but just a way to assure that the “big 6” get as much money as possible. I think hope, if we stay around where we are, the pressure from the media and others would make it very hard for the BCS not to take both.

But, I also think we fans are setting ourselves up for failure if we think that because were were kept out last year, it won’t happen again. Bowl Representatives make these decisions and come to bowls not to look at the teams, but to look at their fans.

In the end, they will make the decision not to invite Boise over a 2 or 3 loss team that comes from a big market.

I was referring to this season

I mean what we have accomplished this season and I only brought up our old players because someone referred to Virginia losing to us as a horrible loss for them. I was just stating that we do have a proud tradition. How many division 1 titles does Boise have? You criticize me for bringing up the past, but since the Fiesta Bowl, ya’ll act like your college football elite. I am not foolish enough to think you will be reasonable, but if Boise and TCU were in the Pac-10 and Big 12 respectively we would both be middle of the road most years. Boise couldn’t hang with SC year in and year out, and TCU couldn’t hang with Texas and OU. I understand that you are on a high right now, but please don’t tell me you honestly think you could run through the Big 12, SEC, or Pac-10 year in and year out. I know we couldn’t. Also you claim all these great wins, outside of OU and 2 wins over Oregon, since 02 you are 6-7 vs teams from BCS conferences, we are 15-7, which shows two things were not scared to go on the road and when we do play them WE WIN. I was used to think that Boise deserved all of the accolades, but when I went back and looked at you schedules, are you kidding me, Except for one trip to Georgia, you have stayed on the West Coast and filled in most of your schedule with Bowling Green and Miami of Ohio. Three years you have had AN AMAZING SEASON and lost your Bowl game, BC in 05, Louisville, and us Last Year. You guys remind me of Texas Tech out here, your level of self worth is so overinflated, considering that when you play a real team most of the time you lose. Tradition and past (ancient past) national titles have little to do with winning now, and much more to do with immature, in your faceness.

How many Division I National Titles does Boise State have? ONE.
And it carries about as much weight as TCU’s 1938 romp.

You’re gonna have to try harder than that, dickweed.

Like this,

How many BCS Bowl wins does TCU have? Berths? Committee considerations?

Me -1
You – ZERO

We can keep this ignorant pissing contest going if you like, because I know as well as you do, TCU up until 4-5 years ago was nothing for upwards of sixty years. They have a lone pre-WWII National Title. So what, so does SMU. The fact is TCU is a career .520 squad, that is only 46 games above .500.

Raise your hand if you have a losing season this decade. * TCU raises hand *

Me – 2
You – ZERO

Boise State is an all time .701 team, and if you just want to count since joining DIA then they’re above .750(127-42), which is good enough for best ALL-TIME winning percentage in Major College Football. Sure, keep saying they play nobody. Keep holding that Poinsettia Bowl win close to your heart. Lord knows, I’m holding that 2003 Fort Worth Bowl close to mine.
Where was that game played at anyway?

Me – 3
You – ZERO

I win, YAY ME!!
I’d like to thank God for giving me the ability to rid this blog of bumbling TCU fans.
And as it says above the Pearly Gates, GO BRONCOS!

Now onto the other non-sensical part of your post.

but if Boise and TCU were in the Pac-10 and Big 12 respectively we would both be middle of the road most years.

If Boise State and TCU were in any BCS conference, they would get BCS money, BCS facilities, BCS coaching Salaries, BCS recruits, etc. Therefore it would be entirely up to how the said program took advantage of the opportunities at their disposal. Just blindly saying they would be “middled of the road” is ignorant to the facts, not cognizant of them.
Kind of like this quote,

Except for one trip to Georgia, you have stayed on the West Coast and filled in most of your schedule with Bowling Green and Miami of Ohio.

See the post above where earlier I already made you look like a fool for Graham Watson Style fact checking.

I have an idea, call TCU’s AD and tell him you want the Horned Frogs to schedule a home and home series with Boise State. Because beating your ass on this blog just isn’t doing it for me anymore. It’s not you, it’s me. I DON’T LIKE YOU.

I’ll give you the BCS game, but I have stated on here numerous times that I watched every minute of that game and was pulling for Boise the whole time.
Keep pumping up that winning percentage, once again it is against horrible teams. Check your regular season road games since ‘02 against BCS opponents. YOU ARE 1-5. Arkansas in ’02, Oregon State in ’03, Georgia and Oregon State in ’05, Washington in ’07 and then you won at Oregon last year, check it. All those years where we sucked I agree with you but we were also playing Texas and Texas A&M every year. Southwest conference maybe you remember it. I know its not the Big Sky, but maybe you can admit that our competition was a little tougher.ME 2 You 0
The whole point of saying we would be middle of the road, was saying that as of now, we would be, even with BCS amenities, do you really think a Cali kid is going to pick Boise over SC. Hmmm girls and beaches, potatoes and snow. Tough decision. The big boys are the big boys whether we like it or not, all the other schools in their conferences have this magic BCS wand as well and the same teams seem to be in the mix every year. I wonder why? The other schools have a chance but when Texas, USC, Ohio State, Notre Dame, LSU, Florida, and the other schools have a top flight coach they would beat teams like ours 8 out of 10 times. Get over it, what has Boise done that makes you think they could hang every year. Beat Utah State? Beat Fresno? Beat Nevada? Beat Hawaii? You still have not made a compelling argument on how your winning percentage means anything. If Florida or Texas played your schedule they might not have lost a game this decade.Me 3 You 0
And please call your AD and setup a home and home, we won’t let you hang around this time. I am sorry that you don’t like me considering you don’t know me, when does you anger management class get out?. I love talking about footbalI and only got on here to have a discussion about how the BCS sucks with another school that has to put up with their bullshit.
Final point, all I have ever said negative about Boise is that you have played top flight competition and I know you will come back at me with some ignorant insult about TCU vs those teams as well. All you do when you do that is prove my point, I am proud of my Frogs this year and if we get to a BCS bowl game I will be very excited, Now I know you think you have kicked my ass, but if we got 50 unbiased fans in here and let them look at your schedules since ‘02, who side of the argument do you think they would fall on? You have a great program, but if you don’t want to be disrespected leave the Smurf Turf and go kick some teams’ ass, but like your record in the regular season shows, you don’t schedule those games and when you do you normally lose. Until that changes you will be disrespected every year.

We do have a title in Div 1

It was in 1980 and it was 1-AA. Still Div 1.

You have to be more specific when talking divisions. You should have said 1-A Titles.

you were also playing rice (298-429-22 since 1940), baylor (521-523-43 all time / series with tcu tied at 49-49-7) and smu (437-455-54 all time / series with tcu; tcu leads 43-39-7). so you were losing against texas, and texas tech and arkansas and weren’t any better than rice, and baylor, and smu.

Ok Joe Bob

When are you going to realize that I am not trying to say that TCU is elite or better than Boise overall, I am just stating that if you want to be taken as a serious NC contender every year, you have to schedule better and the same goes for us, otherwise you will always be a statue of liberty play and smurf turf, that when the analysts talk about you it won’t always start with,“despite their weak schedule”. What point did you make with your ooc opponents, since we are in the mtn. west, I guess you can add utah and byu to our list and once again two years with no BCS opponents. Our Texas tech nullfies Oregon State and LSU nullfies VA Tech, so our schedule is still better. None of you can justify the schedule, you keep trying by throwing out that your percentage is better than ours, I know that, but again it is against shit. 6 WAC titles wow, I know we only have two but we were only in the league for 6 years, and we also have a CUSA title when that league contained, Louisville, CIncinatti, South Florida, and Southern Miss. Add to that a mountain west title and I think we have more than held our own with conference championships and against far superior competition. I know that it makes you feel all warm and fuzzy inside when other homers back you up, but again you make arguments based on your success against shitty teams. All of theses OOC games, look at your record, have you noticed when College Gameday or the other shows put up winning percentage vs BCS schools, it is Utah and TCU who always head the list. One poster I think correctly stated that you can’t just play one BCS school a year and then play that WAC schedule and bitch about respect. You stated all of the SMU, Baylor, and Rice records, I would pull up Utah State, Idaho, SJ State, and New Mexico State, but what is the point. I wish your team nothing but success like I said from the get go and I hope we both make a BCS game. Does the cold make you guys cranky?? It’s all kiss my ass and dickweed. Im sorry that I was a little off with our conference schedule, but that doesn’t make me an idiot, I was doing it off what I had heard. Oh, and by the way you said typical TCU grad, Boise isn’t ranked academically by the Princeton review, TCU is. So leave your mom’s basement after she makes you a snack and go to your job at Potato World and leave the business in the real world to the educated people and with a name like Joe Bob I can’t be that far off.

The Princeton Review contains 371 schools

That is really weak considering now that I have looked at the list more extensively, Angelo State is on there and that is where kids out here go when they can’t get in anywhere else, its basically a glorified JC.

This will be my last post because I don’t like the way I have been acting and I don’t know why I got on here in the first place. Joe Bob, maybe I am not up on my Halloween protocol, but was that last paragraph a threat?

it's a joke, john

convicted sex offenders are prohibited from participating in halloween activities. the unlit houses obviously are not visited by children seeking treats. sorry if you somehow mistook that as a threat. how would i follow through on a threat anyway? i don’t know who you are, where you live, etc.

sorry to see you go john. your presence here produced a lot of spirited debate. tcu is a good football team. unfortunately, like bsu, they don’t play the type of schedule that the bcs likes. in the end, though, i think the important thing is that we support our teams and take pride in their accomplishments.

as a final note let me just say “wooo pig! sooie! go razorbacks!” and “go broncos” too.

Are you retarded?
First all I said Division 1 titles and I checked don’t see Boise anywhere.

Did you even click the link above that I gave you? See, I backed up all my facts with links that show them, unlike yourself.

Boise State has TWO national titles, big guy.

1958- NCJAA (Not Division I)
1980- Division ONE- AA Champions. Here, Look again. <Click that.

Maybe you you need a quick rundown of the divisions of Division I football.

YOU ARE 1-5. Arkansas in ’02, Oregon State in ’03, Georgia and Oregon State in ’05, Washington in ’07

See this is what I hate about ignorance. You are going to point toward every stat and fact that proves your point. Most who aren’t objective (while claiming they are) do that. That makes this debate moot. Because you’re including a skewed view of the facts. You’re only looking at losses on purpose, like I’ll be blinded by your wisdom.

I feel dumber for having read it.

The FACT is, since Chris Petersen became the head coach in 2006, Boise State is 4-1 against BCS Schools. Oh damn, you left that one out. Need a list?

Here,

1. Oregon State, 42-14 W 9/7/06
2. (10)Oklahoma 43-42 W 1/1/07
3. Washington 10-24 L 9/8/07
4. (17)Oregon 37-32 W 9/20/08
5. (16)Oregon 19-8 W 9/3/08

Total: 4-1 Need proof? Here. <Click that.

Of those four wins, three of their opponents were ranked at the time. Which means that Boise State, in the last 4 seasons under Petersen, when playing ranked BCS opponents, is 3-0 against them. This would represent a change that you fail to indicated in your sputtered sentence fragments. Why is that?
I pointed out the Broncos past losses to you. So I’m not surprised when you used that to try to flame on. Boise State has been a significantly different program in the last five years, and these games show that. That’s relevant now.

Sure there is the one point loss to TCU. GO ahead, use this too. You can talk about how TCU dominated in the statbook if you like. But the fact is Boise State was in control of the game, stats aside, until the 8:51(<click that) mark of the 4th quarter. At that point, it was the first time in 2008 that Broncos trailed in a game. The Broncos had every opportunity to win that game. Can you say missed field goal? They failed, TCU wins. TCU was dominant.

Awesome. Now there is no need to respond, I covered it for you.

Don’t be mad because I’m better a this than you.
One day, with lots of hard work, you’ll get there. Graduate High School, enroll at ITT Tech, and you’ll be a whiz in no time.

Still waiting for someone to reply

Wow, all the trash talk telling me to check my facts, so I did and prove to you that the only reason Boise has all of these great seasons is that they never play anybody. Another thing, do you realize if it wasn’t for Bowl games you number of BCS conference games goes down under 10 since 2002. You guys really put yourselves out there don’t you. Someone brought up OU in an earlier post and said Boise 1 TCU 0, we beat them too jackass, but like I said earlier we did it in Norman. He can try to rip me

Look I started out posting very positive things about Boise, and I still think you deserve a BCS game this year, but a few people started with the insults and downplaying my team, so I threw them back. If you look at all of my posts I have never said that TCU is a member of college football elite, but with the schedule Boise plays they aren’t as well. The reason we both get disrespected is that while we might have a tough win over a BCS school we follow it with 2-3 creampuffs. When is the last time we played LSU, Georgia, and Tennessee 3 weeks in a row? The BCS schools with the exception of the Big East have much tougher schedules and have to on their game every week. We will crack that ceiling at some point, but we need Boise to go on the road and play a Michigan like Utah did, or go to Clemson like TCU did. All of the non-BCS are in the same boat, Pederson has too schedule tougher games, it hurts out argument that we deserve automatic bids when he schedules UC Davis, bowling green, and the Miami of Ohio’s of the world. All of your non conference should be against BCS schools. Next year we play Baylor, Texas tech, and Arkansas on the road. I am sorry if some of posts were too one sided, but the objectivity has to go both ways.

TCU is a good team, I think we can all agree with that. This week they are in the target for criticism. I think that everyone was expecting them to jump BSU at some point, I just think that we were expecting that to happen after a less than stellar performance in a game. It will be interesting to see how the polls work out throughout the rest of the season. There is plenty of possibility for more flip-flopping.

Hey 6 quick observations
1. Oregon is really good and what does that mauling say about Ohio State and ND.
2. How did we let LaMichael James leave the state?
3. Stanzi throws 5 picks and Iowa still wins by 18, my god the Big Ten is pathetic. Don’t forget Virginia beat that same Indiana 47-7.
4. Alabama is overrated, Virginia Tech was not that good of a win, lose to NC at home, who also lost to Virginia.
5. The real top 5 in no particular order. Texas, Florida, Oregon, Boise State, and TCU.
6. Give Kiffin and that staff 2 more years and watch out for Tennessee.

If we don’t both get in it will be the biggest travesty in the history of the BCS.
