Poll Watch - Week 7 Update: Boise State Ranked #4 in the BCS Poll.
via ESPN.com
After what some have called an "unimpressive victory" for the Broncos, what are their chances of moving up or staying put in the polls? Some have said that they should and more than likely would drop. But after a weekend of upsets and close games, will they? Could all that unrest help their poll position? Not to mention, is anyone else getting sick of the rankings drama anyway? Does anyone else want to be able to simply enjoy a Bronco victory without having to worry about "Style Points" and "What are the pollster gonna think..."?
Are close games "unimpressive victories" for the BCS teams or do they just get a pass in that category since they are all "big time" and everything? Apparently when you are "big time" all that is important is finding a way to win.
Virginia Tech goes down to the Triple Option heavy Georgia Tech. USC wins a squeaker to Notre Dame, Jimmy Clausen still look like an ostrich. Florida is lucky that they have a reliable Kicker. Texas won?...Huh? (guess I shoulda watched the second half) Does anyone think that they will be going to the NC game anymore? Idaho continues their winning ways including beating the point spread, not to mention getting themselves in position to go to the H Bowl. How does TCU's "impressive victory" factor in for their BCS hopes? Is anyone else as confused as I am about BYU being ranked? Who will be #1 this week? (My money is on Alabama).
So, lets talk it out. Who is too High? Who is to low? Where will the Broncos end up? Should Idaho be ranked? And the BCS Rankings make their debut for our pleasure and discussion.

#5 spot
seems fitting for the time being.
1 Florida
2 Bama
3Texas
4 SC
5 Boise State
I’m guessing this is what th BCS top 5 will look like this afternoon. A one-loss SC will replace the one-loss VT at the 4th spot. Hopefully Oregon destroys SC on Halloween and puts them in their place. Florida stays at #1, even though they only won by a field goal at the end. Bama was impressive against S. Carolina, but not impressive enough to jump the reigning the champs.

What suprises me
… is not that Florida is still #1, but that there are 49 coaches voting them there. have they seen them play?

Since they are comparing........
Since ESPN commentators and other fellow media outlets are comparing BSU’s wins to those of other teams who beat common opponents, let me add in my two cents on comparisons.
Cincinnati has played two common opponents this year: Miami (OH) and Fresno State. The Bearcats played FS in Cincy and Miami (OH) in Ohio (exactly opposite of Boise State). The results are as follows (correct me if I am wrong):
@ Cincinnati 28, Fresno State 20
Cincinnati 37, @ Miami (OH) 13
Boise State 51, @ Fresno State 34
@ Boise State 48, Miami (OH) 0
I get this funny feeling that BSU’s victories were more impressive than Cincy’s. Also, the feeling gets funnier when I think that Boise’s biggest win is against #13 Oregon, and Cincy’s premier victory against an unranked South Florida. Hmmmmmmm………………….Conspiracy??
by LoneSausages on Oct 18, 2009 11:55 AM PDT reply actions 0 recs
I'll give Cincy a little credit...South Florida was ranked when they beat them...and undefeated at the time.
I do think Cincy has looked good and been pretty impressive, but, like you, I don’t think they are as good of a team as Boise…of course I am just slightly biased.

Yeah.
But some defense just can’t cover the spread, which Cincinnati runs. However, whenever mid-tier spread teams face someone real, they’re exposed.
This dones’t matter anyway. Cincy probably has lost Pike to injury. Their backup QB did well, but not in passing - at all. all he did was run. If that’s all he can do, Cincy will be beaten rather easily!

I stand corrected.
South Florida was ranked (and undefeated), with their signature win against a bipolar Florida State. And BSU beat a #14 Oregon (at the time). I was using today’s polls for my argument (it made my side sound better).
I agree that I, too, am biased when it comes to having an opinion on Boise State. However, if ESPN wants to start comparing apples to oranges, then there cannot be a double standard and you must compare ALL apples and oranges.

lmfao
i think its funny forums everywhere are in an uproar of us being #4, people are saying the computers are crap and should be a playoff, i do agree playoff would be great, but heres the ironic part, last year somehow the computers were fine? and everything was ok because all the big schools dominated and cept for utah noone talked about a playoff, but now somehow the computers are wrong because the little guys are getting in and everyone is wanting a playoff system all of a sudden? lmfao the big teams and their fans only want a playoff now compared to last year because their teams are dominating. i mean boise, tcu, cincy small teams doing work caring the banners for their school, say what you want the computers are unbiased and dont lie numbers were crunched and it is what it is until we have a playoff system im liking the #4 spot haha! GO BRONCOS!

hilarious
What people don’t realize is that there is SO much more football to be played. As the blue blood conferences play out, we unfortunately have a lot of opportunity to fall in the polls. All i pay attention to is the distance between us and TCU at this point.
by Bankssz on Oct 18, 2009 2:35 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
you're right
As much as I love my Broncos, Bankssz is on the money…the dif. between us and TCU is the most important thing next to us winning out.

Most people are currently projecting BOTH Boise State and TCU going to a BCS game this year...assuming we both go undefeated.
Wouldn’t that be sweet…and a great precedent to set?!!

can't happen right??
Unless we both finish above the one or two AQ conference champs. I might have that wrong???
by Bankssz on Oct 18, 2009 2:53 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
disregard
I get it. We would get in under the provision that we are ranked in the top 12 and they would get in under the at large provision if they are ranked above an AQ conference champ.

In my dreams
We play Oregon again to completely shut everyone up. Then again seeing boy McCoy get Venabled over and over and over would be cool too.

Not Cincy or Miami
no discredit to them, but we are still building our program…a good game (God forbid a win) against Texas or USC would go so much farther than against the other two teams. I think we would fair okay against either…especially with a month to prepare. USC probably has the better defense, but if Oregon beats them (like we want), then a win over Texas would look better.
However, Texas looks like they’ll win out (for now)…so the likelihood is the Alabama/Florida loser or the ACC Champion. If it’s Alabama, no thanks (they lost to Utah…two losses will give people excuses)…Florida would bring the most recognition to the program.
All in all, a win (or just a good close game) against USC or Florida would go miles as far as building the program in the future.
Hell, we could get really lucky and end up playing Notre Dame, still. Wouldn’t be a good game, I don’t think (we would probably crush them), but the national exposure from that game would be tremendous!

i think at this rate both boise and tcu going undefeated they both deserve shots at the big bowls at th end of the year, you cant punish either team by playing their schedule.

Notre Dame would be an ideal matchup for us.
Unfortunately they most likely won’t make the BCS. But the fact is that we could beat them and beat them badly which would make a huge statement for us. If we end up playing Florida, Bama, or Texas I think there is a 60% chance we loose and badly. Obviously I hope I’m wrong but I would much rather play ND, USC, or a ACC/Big East team. I’m still half scared to get a rematch with Oregon with how much they would be fired up for that and how they have been rolling lately. – All of these statements come from my realist side while my hopeful side still thinks we can beat Florida! Also I try to keep reminding myself that Utah struggled last year against Utah State and still went on to thump Bama.
by Crazylegs on Oct 18, 2009 10:01 PM PDT reply actions 0 recs
Bama this year is, IMO, a much stronger and more complete team than the one Utah played against last year. I expect them to be the SEC champs, and ultimately, to win the BCS championship game this year.
It seems that Texas is the consenus choice to oppose the SEC champ in the BCS championship but I have a feeling when it is all said and done you might see and undeafeated Big 10 champ Iowa team there instead to face the SEC champ.
I would love to see BSU against Florida because I live in Florida and it would be incredibly satisfying win for bragging rights. I would love to walk around wearing blue and orange with the BSU logo in the midst of all the blue and orange UF apparell everyone wears around here. Not to long back it was mainly garnet and gold FSU but it seems that has rapidly deminished over the last few years and everyone has jumped on the UF bandwagon.
Regardless, a BCS win for BSU this year combined with early success next year against opponents like VT just might give us a legitimate chance for BCS championship consideration next year. That would be the ultimate validation in the big picture for what we all know is a strong program year after year. It is time that the nation knows also.

I have some friends who are Florida alums, born and raised in Florida. And they take every opportunity to remind of how Boise State “plays high school teams” and " The SEC is the only real football conference."
I would love to see Boise State crush them in a BCS Bowl. A close win wouldn’t be enough, it’d have to be a rout.
Boise State - The best in all the land (The "land" being Idaho, and large parts of California, Oregon, and Nevada.)

Although I would consider any win in a BCS game against a top team from a BCS conference a great victory regardless of score I actually believe that BSU is capable of not only winning but doing it convincing fasion.
A sound defeat of a UF program in a BCS game would be even sweeter for those of us who live in SEC territory. I can only imagine the aftermath that would ensue in the area…..

i've got tcu beating iowa in rose bowl or playing in sugar vs alabama
i think boise gets texas and beats colt boy mccoy. another big 12 victim. i see florida and usc in ncg. it’s meant to be for sooo many reasons. east vs west, sec vs pac-ten. can superman tebow and coach urban meyer go down as the greatest player and coach in the history of college football. or as lee corso likes to say “not so fast”. usc will have home field advantage and if arkansas can play with florida on their field usc should be able to pull it out. florida is not the offensive machine they were last season. peace.
