Comment season: Bowl weekend open thread

Welcome back, football. We missed you.

Bowl season gets underway this weekend with such fabulous matchups as Navy vs. Wake Forest and Fresno State vs. Colorado State. OK, so maybe "fabulous" isn't the right word. But it is football, and as hopelessly addicted men and women, we must watch and we must comment.

Feel free to do so on this post as you're watching some bowl action. You can talk about the Poinsettia Bowl, too, if you want. We'll be back on Monday to put the finishing touches on P-Bowl previews, so until then, see you in the comments. And go Broncos!

Screw this. I'm gonna do something a little more fun than watching these two teams. I think I'm gonna go vacuum the living room…..and watch the 2007 Fiesta Bowl (for about the 5 bazillionth time)!

It's nice to hear all the Boise State talk by the announcers during the Fresno Col St. game.

by goodhandsman on Dec 20, 2008 12:55 AM PST reply actions   0 recs

The announcers for the New Mexico only want to talk about Boise State and the Poinsettia bowl… :) Of Course! But they also said Brandstatter is a 2nd round pick and great NFL qualities…. sick. Come on, size and arm strength ain't everything.

Yeah, I thought that was pretty crazy too. I guess that makes sense though, look at Zabranski. Aside from a couple bad games and a few badly timed interceptions, he was a pretty decent QB. But he isn't the most ideal size for an NFL QB. So maybe size does hold more ground then skill. Either that or the announcers are on crack! … It's probably the crack!

Colorado St. is pathetic. It's funny that TCU only beat them 13 – 7. Imagine what Kellen Moore will do to them. It's also interesting that all the TCU homos think their schedule was so tough, but in the end they only played four teams who ended up with a winning record: Oklahoma, BYU, Utah, and Air Force… and how many of those did they win… oh yeah, two!

Oh yeah… Turnover Tommy sucks too!

Cheers to that!!

Fresno had this game in hand and they let it go. It's like they just run out of steam. It probably has a lot to do with their strength conditioning. Probably the same reason that so many of their players get injured throughout the season.

by goodhandsman on Dec 20, 2008 2:40 AM PST reply actions   0 recs

There are a few guaranteed things in life- death, taxes and Fresno State coming up with new ways to choke away games.

BTW- Boise State will always be the 2007 Fiesta Bowl Champs. Still gives me goose bumps every time I watch it!!!!

by MikeTransplant on Dec 20, 2008 2:50 AM PST reply actions   0 recs

Congrats Fresno on the great win! …….what? ……oh, they choked again? well, atleast Pat Hill has created a consistent team at something! "Anyone, anytime, anywhere" is only the second half of their motto. The first half goes something like "we will choke against…"
Atleast this taught us some potential weaknesses about TCU… like their offense. (13 against CSU??)

by BigBaloo on Dec 20, 2008 2:59 AM PST reply actions   0 recs

Ah pat hill…. with sound decision making like that, I can't believe that Washington didn't steal you away.

by jahkass on Dec 20, 2008 3:09 AM PST reply actions   0 recs

I think it's safe to say the Pat Hill era of being good is officially over. Fresno looks unmotivated and pathetic

by Nick on Dec 20, 2008 3:18 AM PST reply actions   0 recs

To the rational football fan yes, but to ESPN analysts??? I only wish it were so! Do you think they will still get high pre-season ratings? WAC coaches poll will probably still put them in the top 3!

Its amazing how lame some of the predictions are about the Poinsettia bowl! Check this out!:
http://accuscore.com/ncaaf/articles/poinsettia-bo…

That site also predicts 3 receptions for Childs, 1 touchdown and a 90 rating for Kellen Moore, a single sack for our Defense and no interceptions. Who knew TCU had the toughest defense in the history of college football?

by pretendhuman on Dec 20, 2008 6:47 AM PST reply actions   0 recs

Well, I'm 3-0. I just need BYU to take care of business tonight

I can't believe my wife is beating all three of my picks right now. She's tied for 4th. My highest is 39th.

by goodhandsman on Dec 20, 2008 6:06 PM PST up reply actions   0 recs

Nice foresight picking Fresno to lose. Again, I did not consider that they had a 100% chance of choking against a team they were better than.

Vegas Bowl turning into a hard fought game despite WAC like officiating. To think that Cougar fans thought they could dominate us, tonight I'm decidedly unimpressed with the plethora of dropped balls and swiss cheese-like D on display by BYU.

by Rob on Dec 20, 2008 7:46 PM PST reply actions   0 recs

Oh, but this is the dominant MWC! But seriously, Mark May watches this team and thinks that we would lose not only to them, but Air Force as well? What is that guy smoking?!? These are some serious mediocre teams at best! No wonder TCU rolled them.

by BigBaloo on Dec 20, 2008 8:23 PM PST up reply actions   0 recs

At least Fresno has a defending WAC and national championship baseball team. Of course, Boise doesn't have baseball, but we all know what would happen if we had baseball.

Man! If Troy takes out So. Miss, I'm down to 1-4!
I picked So. Florida to win 42-17, but that is my only success this bowl season so far! Go Broncos 30-14 (I hope)

by pretendhuman on Dec 21, 2008 7:55 PM PST reply actions   0 recs

I don't know if anyone else saw it, but last night at halftime between So. Miss. and Troy, Herbstreit became the first person to say "on air" that everyone is forgetting about the Boise State Defense. He reminded little Doug Flutie that while TCU's D is formidable the Broncos are the #1 defense in the country in goal-to-go situations, allowing scores only 40% of the time. Flutie was either speechless or had a mouthful of Flutie Flakes (I couldn't tell which). He did manage to pick TCU anyway. Herbie picked the Broncos.

Good for Herbstreit. Too bad he's not calling the P-Bowl.

I teach at a Montessori school, and my preschool class was the class that Chris Peterson's son attended when he was 5 (I believe), so we decided to request Coach Pete's signature, who happens to be the next door neighbor of a parent we see all the time… I got a ball and we handed it off a week ago…

I just found out that the signer football I bought at the Blue and Orange store was taken on the plane to San Diego! Whoopee!

I just wish it was for me to keep instead of my class at school. :)

I'm still sick after watching D. Brown's leg snap like a twig and look like he had two knees. Horrifying! Hope for a full recovery for that young kid.
