Boise State's 2012 recruiting class: Travis Averill is large, in charge
Photo: Allen J. Schaben/LA Times
There's no doubt that Boise State's remarkable run over the last decade has been aided, in large part, by a solid offensive line. Center and guard play has been consistent in protecting the QB and opening running lanes for some of the most productive backs the Broncos have ever fielded...but the succession of tackles has been easily the brightest spot. Daryn Colledge gave way to Ryan Clady to gave way to Nate Potter. Colledge and Clady both went on day 1 of the NFL Draft and Potter will likely follow, so who now will pick up the OT torch that's quickly becoming a tradition of excellence at Boise State. Well, 2012 recruit Travis Averill could certainly be "that guy"...or he could move inside to guard. Coach Pete certainly likes to have options.

Wake up, Bronco Nation: Boise State football links and things, 1-27-12
Quaylon Ewing-Burton dismissed from team
The only reason for his dismissal was that he "did not live up to the standards of the team." Coach Pete is notoriously tight lipped about things like this. Hopefully QEB learns his lesson whether that's academically or something else and has an opportunity to work his way back on the team.
Boise State's student flash mob gets some attention
Broncochick was nice enough to post the videos here yesterday, but then it got picked up by ESPN blogger Eamonn Brennan for some national attention. It's good to see the students out to support the basketball team.
Boise State players being noticed for being well coached at the Senior Bowl
A number have analysts have noted that Boise State players have great technique and always hustle. It's good to see the coaching staff at Boise State getting more accolades for their work in turning 2 and 3 star players into NFL prospects. Practice was rained out on Thursday and players were forced inside for drills so not too much news, but here's a report from Cripe on Kellen Moore and the conflicting views on his performance.
Buccaneers hire Greg Schiano away from Rutgers
The Buccaneers thought they had Chip Kelley, but I'm glad they had to settle for Schiano. The Rutgers vacancy should not generate any Chris Petersen rumors so it's a win, win, win!
Kellen Moore, Doug Martin, and other Boise State players' Senior Bowl practice wrap-ups
Five Boise State players will compete in Saturday's Senior Bowl (2:00 p.m. MT, NFL Network), and all five have been competing all week long for the attention of NFL scouts and coaches in practice. How did the Broncos fare? Did Kellen Moore grow six inches in the last two days? Is there enough Doug Martin to go around? Find out after the jump.

Boise State runs out of gas, falls to UNLV in OT
Coach Leon Rice said that he believes fatigue was a factor when UNLV pulled away in OT. Boise State had rebounded well all game and actually led the Rebels by 1 going into the extra period, but UNLV was able to grab the first 4 rebounds in OT to down the Broncos. It was a great effort by the guys who had lost 6 of their last 8. They face a 16-4 Wyoming team at home on Saturday.
Boise State still searching for 13th game next year
New AD Mark Coyle said a rumored possible matchup with Arkansas in Dallas is "not on our radar". Right now, Boise State has 6 home games and 6 road games scheduled. Obviously we'd all love another home game, just not against Idaho or Portland State.
Doug Martin making a big impact at the Senior Bowl (HT: Please Spay and Neuter)
The Fifth Down has a recap of Senior Bowl practices and they have high praise for Doug Martin. They also have good updates on Billy Winn and Shea McClellin who both have impressed scouts this week. They are lukewarm so far on Kellen Moore though. CBS Sports has a profile on Shea McClellin that talks about his versatility and how well he's played. NFL.com has an update on Senior Bowl practice that further highlights Martin and McClellin.

Boise State's 2012 recruiting class: Jack Fields can run but you can't hide
Texas has become known as a bit of a high school football mecca, so the fact that the Broncos have made steady recruiting inroads there should put a smile on your face. Hopefully the coaching staff will head down to Dillon to take a gander at Tim Riggins and Smash Williams next.
The Houston area has been the most fertile ground for Boise State of late, but the possibly the biggest boon to the 2012 recruiting class was found in the west Texas town that Marty Robbins held so dear—El Paso—the home of a wildly successful running back named Jack Fields.

Senior Bowl notes: Kellen Moore would rather meet Columbus than Shakespeare
That was an actual question poised to him by a scout at the Senior Bowl. Jason Kirk has the possible interpretations of the answers. Meanwhile, Simon Samano at NFL.com tries to make a case for Kellen benefiting from Tebow's success. Seems like a stretch to me since they have about the opposite quarterback style. Doug Martin gets praised for his blocking skills and Kellen gets criticized for his arm getting tired according to the NY Times. Chadd Cripe's report from the Senior Bowl acknowledged Kellen faltering during drills but notes that this isn't uncommon and he was at his best during live action. George Iloka performed well and looked comfortable. He came up with a diving interception from Kirk Cousins.
Jeff Elloriaga out the rest of the season with a broken thumb
The sophomore guard fractured it in the loss to TCU on Saturday. This is a bad loss for the Broncos who have lost 6 of their last 8 games and haven't posted a win in 2012 yet. Oh and they take on 12th ranked UNLV tonight.
Brent McMurphy tweets that there is strong support to increase bowl eligibility to 7 wins
Western Kentucky cheers this news while Idaho Vandal fans see their hopes of making a bowl get smaller and smaller.
Dr. Saturday looks at the possibility of a Boise State backslide
He presents both sides of the argument and I think I agree with his final conclusion. I more look at 2012 as a possible repeat of 2007. And as bad I as I remember 2007 being, I'm more than happy to complain about a 10-3 record as a down season any day.
Happy Birthday!
Happy birthday to reader Billy Derome. Have an extra piece of cake for me since I started a diet.
